Meet Bramble!

Bramble is usually a crazy Vizsla who loves to play and has an abundance of energy! (as you can see from the last picture)

Bramble presented at our Ponteland branch following continuous vomiting after eating and drinking, an uncomfortable stance and abdomen, and not being her usual self. She was very subdued which is very unlike Bramble

Despite not appearing on x-rays, and symptomatic treatment being unsuccessful, a pine cone(!) was discovered in her small intestine following surgery during hospitalisation at our Alnwick branch.

Immediately after recovery, Bramble started to give us hints at what she usually is like, wagging her tail and enjoying all the attention she was receiving. She had an oesophagostomy feeding tube placed during the surgery as she hadn’t eaten properly for days prior and this helped encourage her to get her appetite back and begin eating on her own!

Bramble is now on the road to a full recovery, and her owners are so happy to see her back to her usual self.

It’s so lovely to see our patients back happy and healthy after hospitalisation!

Today we pay our respects to the brave men and women that served during the first and second world wars.

As depicted by literature and films, animals also played a role in the war effort. It is estimated that around 10 million horses served in World War I and II with a significant amount losing their lives. They were used for transportation of soldiers and supplies including heavy machinary and artillery. Horses were compulsary requisitioned for the war effort, with many being commandered from farms and livery stables, much to the dismay of owners. This is highlighted in the Michael Morpurgo 1982 Novel and film adaption ‘War Horse’.

Dogs also served for the British Army during World War I as ‘sentry dogs’ barking at the sign of inftruders, ‘scout dogs’, and even ‘mercy dogs’ to comfort those in their final moments.

Often going unrecognsied, cats assisted with pest control, keeping rat and mice numbers low in the trenches and supply chains such as on ships. This helped reduce the spread of disease and infection and any destruction of provisions trhat were already in short supply.

And who can forget the carrier pigeons that transported messages and even carried cameras to survey enemy territory!

In 2004, the Princess Royal unveiled the ‘Animals in War Memorial’ in London as a tribute to the many animals who paid the ultimate price.
“This monument is dedicated to all the animals that served and died alongside British and allied forces in wars and campaigns throughout time. They had no choice”.

Meet Nessie!

Nessie attended our Morpeth branch for her weigh and worm appointment. As she is a growing puppy, we advise weighing her monthly up until 6-9 months of age (or when she reaches a steadying weight) to make sure we are prescribing the correct dose of parasite treatment

She sat so nicely on the scales!

Bacteria from an ear swab sample!

All those little specks in the shape of ice cream sprinkles (sorry to ruin your love of sprinkles!) are rod shaped bacteria known as bacilli.

The patient had been showing signs of discomfort in both ears and after a swab we found this!

We sent the sample off to an external laboratory for a culture and sensitivity test which came back with the bacteria being resistant to 90% of the first line antibiotics we would usually prescribe.

These tests are beneficial as the majority of antibiotics we would have prescribed, would not have benefitted the infection and the patients discomfort would have continued! With these results, we sought out an effective antibiotic to treat the patient with!

📣 Please share to help other pet owners 📣

Unfortunately, there is a scam circulating regarding pet microchips where pet owners are being led to believe that their pet's microchip has expired.

⚠️ Please be advised that your pet's microchip DOES NOT EXPIRE!

If you receive any correspondence claiming that your pet's microchip needs to be renewed or that your pet has become ‘unregistered’ due to expiration, this is not a legitimate email. Please do not click on the links within the email or give out any personal information. Once your pet has been microchipped, their unique identification number is registered and secure.

Happy National Black Cat Day!

Cats Protection created the day in 2011 after statistics showed that black cats took longer to find homes than other colours.

Folklore follows black cats throughout history, whether it them being witches pets, bad omens and bringers of misfortune.

However, along with some cultures, we like to think black cats are a symbol of good luck!
