Yesterday the Our dogs photographer caught us in a quiet corner giving gorgeous boy Wolfie some pre show ring treatment at Bournemouth Champ show πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‚

I absolutely love providing performance enhancement treatment for show dogs, working sled dogs, agility dogs, working gun dogs. I have to say the 'fine tuning' nature of this kind of work I really enjoy. And the hug afterwards when he won his Limit dog class. It does give me so much joy to know I have helped a dog and owner team achieve their goal. Well done Dawn and Wolfie πŸ‘ŒπŸ₯°

For those that have asked me for physio treatments please remember to remind me early in the day as I am not showing boys but have four girls entered so once B judging starts I won't have any time and then we head home straight after and I hate to have to disappoint anyone but it's a bit of a drive to a late ferry!

Many thanks and looking forwards to seeing everyone 😊🐾

The face of a lion and his brother who have absolutely no intention of demonstrating their rehab exercises to me this morning! πŸ˜‚πŸ₯°πŸ₯° Sometimes there's just no persuading them as hard as the fab carers at The Wildheart Trust try to persuade them πŸ˜‚

Thankfully Zoppa tiger, Suarez lemur and Angus goat were all extremely compliant today and are all maintaining very well on their various physiotherapy regimes πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜

So far I have spent the rest of my day on admin including receiving lots of new vet referrals and booking in new physiotherapy and hydrotherapy cases, finishing up and sending all my weekly clinic case reports to owners and vets, booking my ferries to examine some resit exams next month, paying for my AHPR membership and most exciting of all ... starting work on an outline course plan for our next trip to Poland teaching for the fabulous RehabVet - SzkoΕ‚a terapii manualnej i rehabilitacji psΓ³w, I cannot wait to see our Polish friends again in October πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘πŸ«Ά

Well this is a huge compliment coming from my all time vet physio hero who started us all on our vet physio journeys, this makes me very happy indeed! 😊 😊😊

Three hard hard weeks of examining vet physio degree students as well as travelling to Poland to teach rehab and trying to fit in as many client clinic days in the meantime has been tough!

Apologies to family, friends, my dogs, colleagues, clients and referring vets who I just haven't had as much time for as I usually would, there just haven't been enough hours in this months days! Hopefully I will be back on track soon although I could really do with at least half a day off TBH! πŸ™ˆ

Biggest of thanks to Lee for holding the fort, looking after my precious doggos and looking after me during the brief times I've been home (mostly sleeping! 😴🀣)

Eeeeek what a week! An early start and off to Plumpton for our second week of vet physio examining today and tomorrow then a day in clinic trying to fit as many clients in as possible then off for an early ferry Thursday morning to Heathrow for our flights to Poland for three days of delivering an exercise rehab workshop, flying home next Monday! More examining next Wed and Thursday and then no doubt a weekend of catching up with admin and spending time with my doggos. It's going to be at least three 7 day working weeks, think I need a holiday!

Huge thanks to Lee for holding the fort while I'm working away so much this month ❀️

So proud of our special boy Sparky. Sparky is a huge part of the reason I am a vet physio!

11.5 years ago he suffered an injury which went undiagnosed and became chronic, it was fairly subtle and all practitioners I took him to ... vets, physio's, chiros couldn't find the problem but I knew he was not right! Eventually a fantastic physiotherapist, now sadly retired, diagnosed an iliopsoas strain and we set about the long process of rehabbing him. From that day I knew I needed to learn this magic.

And so I bust a gut, for over three years, studying at night and most weekends, travelling for attended weeks and exams, practicing, practicing, learning everything I could, it was hard, very hard working at the same time, running two businesses but in other ways I loved every minute. And now I spend my work days treating people's much loved furry family, helping to improve their quality of life and also teaching new generations of vet physio's 😊

And this boy ⬇️ this fantastic boy of ours who loves to be called Sparklestars and lives for cuddles and running in harness is now 12.5 years old and this was him strutting his stuff round the ring at the Siberian Husky Club of GB championship show a few weeks ago where he won his class. He lives with a chronic injury, he has regular physio treatment, he has lived a life of me practicing what I preach to my clients, we keep him lean, strong, fit, active, we manage his exercise, diet, home environment. We do ALL the things owners often tell me they find hard for our boy, for all our dogs. We prove it is all doable with time and commitment and just look at him πŸ₯°πŸ˜πŸ₯°πŸ˜ it's so worth it! He won a sled dog race in March at 12 years 5 months.

So I don't just sit in my room giving out unmanageable advice, I support owners with not only science based effective treatment and rehab advice, I KNOW what will work. I love my job! 😊

Busy busy month for us which started with a practice day of final physiotherapy exams for my level six degree students. I was so pleased to hear the students found our day so helpful, we definitely covered lots of ground as well as finding time to cuddle dogs while we discussed techniques 😍

Huge thanks to my clients who brought practice dogs in for us, and for the biscuits and cakes, much appreciated and enjoyed πŸ˜‹

Someone asked me the other day how I fit it all in and in all honesty, this month I'm not entirely sure! πŸ™ˆ I am away examining students for part of the next three consecutive weeks and in between this I have a trip to Poland to help to deliver a three day rehab workshop. I have some full clinic days fully booked and currently no space until early June but Emily is holding the fort and has some availability.

Thank you so much to all my clients for your understanding during this extremely busy time. All I can say is I always learn from teaching so it means I can bring even more knowledge to help all your lovely doggos to the best of my abilities πŸ’œπŸ‘ŒπŸ’–

When you are 16 years old and have been coming for 6 years every month for your conservative management treatment for bilateral cruciate ligament problems, you still enjoy your walks and play and do a bouncy little trot into the physio room but then lie yourself on the treatment mattress and make it clear the physio should just get on with your massage! ❀️πŸ₯°πŸ˜ Oh Honey you are such a character 😍πŸ₯°

Three of my third year veterinary physiotherapy degree students from Plumpton College worked really hard providing pre ring warm up treatment for the Siberian Husky exhibitors at Crufts yesterday. They said all our Siberian owning friends/ fellow competitors were lovely, if a little crazy, they thought we were nuts having 9 Sibes .... now they think we are semi normal! πŸ˜†πŸ€£

Megan, Star and Sophie said it was really interesting and informative for them to be able to go over so many dogs of the same breed in one morning and many of the owners commented how beneficial the treatments were for their dogs so it was great to be able to organise this for all involved 😊 Certainly our Maddison benefitted from her treatment subsequently coming first in her class, thank you ladies πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜

I've said it before and I'll no doubt say it again, I love this little dog ❀️ She had such an absolutely heartbreakingly horrific time before being rescued that when she first came to me for treatment she was extremely guarded and painful and would understandably bite to try to protect herself from harm and discomfort. Now, years later, it melts my heart that she wags a little hello at the start of each session and completely trusts me to thoroughly treat her for her compensatory problems caused by only having three legs.

I'm extremely lucky that Winnie's lovely owner chose me to bring her to for therapy, she makes my day/week/month just to be in her company πŸ₯°β€οΈπŸ˜

🌟🌟 Updated post 🌟🌟

I am planning to set my lovely students up in a quieter area near the Sibe benches, all being well they will be available between 9.30am and 12 noon. Looking forwards to seeing everyone 😊😊

We can offer, again this year, free pre ring warm up massage to include musculoskeletal assessment with my third year veterinary physiotherapy students, these students are already fully qualified in canine massage and are about to complete their vet physio degree. They will be available around the Siberian Husky rings between 9.30am and 12 noon. Please let me know if you would like your dog(s) added to the list. ☺️

We had a fun and informative evening hosted by the young farmer's club yesterday where Abi of A M Chiropractic and our own Emily demonstrated and explained the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to finding the very best therapy to keep your horse in top physical condition. It was really lovely to get together with another very well respected Island practitioner to learn how both physiotherapy and Chiropractic treatments can work so well alongside each other. Team work makes the dream work πŸ˜‰πŸ˜

Huge thanks to Paige and Kingsley for organising the evening and bringing along our two very lovely four legged helpers πŸ’™πŸ’™

🐎 🐎Exciting news! 🐎🐎

For all our Island horse owning clients.

Emily will be setting aside regular days for equine treatments Island wide. As spring approaches make sure your horses are in the best possible musculoskeletal condition. For cases where injury, illness or pathology is present we will need vet consent but for all maintenance and performance enhancement treatments this is not necessary.

Regular equine days beginning 22nd Feb. Email to book and please share so everyone can benefit 😊 πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘

I love all these photos of some of our dogs competing at the Siberian Husky Club of GB 40th Anniversary Aviemore sled dog race in the Scottish Highlands last week, huge thanks to all the fantastic photographers! 🫢

Sorry if you have been unable to get hold of us while I've been away competing, working providing sled dog treatments (38 I think πŸ€”πŸ˜¬) and enjoying a few days holiday with Lee and our amazing doggos πŸ©΅πŸ’œ

My own dogs also had physiotherapy treatment while we were away which is a big part of how they manage to stay as fit and active as they do, this team ran between 1.7 and 3.2 miles almost every day we were away, pulling a load and loving every single moment. We finished 5th overall of two days competition against quite a few 4 dog teams, I am SO proud of this team! πŸ©΅πŸ’œπŸ©΅ What many people might find surprising is that the youngest member is 7 years old and the oldest (canine) member is 12 years and 3 months old! Can you tell who is oldest?

My oldest dog yet to compete in sled dog races was 15 years old and still loving it, our amazing Rosie who lived to 16.5 years old and this is how I know that keeping dogs fit, active and the right weight can lead to full lives into double figures easily and this is what I love helping all owners to achieve 😊🐾

Veterinary Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation

Having worked for many years as a veterinary nurse and then for the last 14 years running our canine hydrotherapy centre and small boarding kennels alongside looking after, training and competing with our Siberian Huskies in sled dog races and championship level dog showing for 20+ years I have always had a huge interest in keeping dogs fit, healthy and happy and when I discovered a veterinary physiotherapy diploma course which would accept me due the amount of practical knowledge I possessed I wanted to achieve this so badly I threw caution (and a lot of money) to the wind and despite thirty years since doing any formal learning decided failure was not an option! It has been a dream of mine for many years but following an injury to one of my own young dogs which resulted in my travelling up and down the country for physiotherapy appointments in an effort to fix him I decided the Isle of Wight’s dogs and dog owners deserved better and so I set about learning how to achieve this for them. I have just completed my level 6 diploma in professional veterinary physiotherapy and rehabilitation with Justo Development and have just begun the level 6 diploma in professional equine physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Once I have achieved this I plan to continue on to top up to the Level 7 degree in veterinary physiotherapy as I want to learn everything I possibly can about how to help mans best friends.

I am extremely lucky to have an amazing team supporting and working alongside me including my partner Lee who runs our own canine hydrotherapy centre β€˜Doggy Paddles’ with our other fantastic part time hydrotherapists and my son Rohan who is currently finishing his A level exams but helps out in our boarding kennels alongside our fantastic kennel staff at our small luxury boarding kennels β€˜Canine Country Retreat. I work closely with β€˜The animal chiro’ Phil Milner who holds canine chiropractic clinics at our centre and am lucky to have the support and friendship of many of the Islands vets, vet nurses, chiropractors, behaviorists, trainers, groomers and many other dog professionals. I strongly believe the very best way to help any dog who is recovering from injury, illness or operation or coping with hereditary problems, degenerative problems or old age weaknesses is for everyone to work together to find the best solution for each individual.

I can provide physiotherapy in the forms of massage, stretching and joint mobilization, electro physical agents and remedial exercise and rehabilitation plans. Electro physical agents include Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy, Phototherapy/Cold Laser, Therapeutic ultrasound and Neuro Muscular Electro Stimulation. Although these all sound a bit scary they are actually painless ways of introducing energy into tissues and cells to promote and even re start healing which often will not occur without them. This is why we have spent a considerable amount of money making sure we can provide these very valuable agents for your dogs as we believe the Islands dogs deserve to have this kind of treatment easily available to them.

Veterinary permission is necessary by law in order for a physiotherapist to provide treatment to animals so if you think physio could help your dog ask your vet provide a referral. I have referral forms to make this easier or alternatively your vet can just email me at [email protected] stating they are happy for me β€˜Julie Platt’ to provide physiotherapy for your dog (please include dogs name).
