πŸ‡ Rabbit Awareness Week πŸ‡
Housing
Rabbits can "hoppily" live inside or outside as long as they're being given everything they need.
🌑️ In the wild, the temperature inside a rabbit's burrow is around 10 degrees celcius; this means for pet rabbits we should try and keep their environment to between 10 and 20 degrees celsius.
Whether a rabbit is kept indoors or outdoors, they have the same space requirements. These minimum requirements are 3m long x 2m wide x 1m high for a bonded pair of rabbits. Within this they need constant access to their sleeping, exercising and toileting areas.
Having access to plenty of space allows them to show their natural behaviours such as running, digging, hiding and binkying!
πŸ“¦ Rabbits are a prey animal so they need plenty of hiding spaces such as tunnels, boxes and platforms.

🐰 Outdoor Rabbits
Keeping your rabbits outside is all about location, location, location!
Keep them out of the direct sun β˜€οΈ
Shelter from wind and rain
Keep ventilated
Free from draughts
Plenty of bedding
Raised from the floor

Converted sheds/playhouses make good housing.
You can be as creative as you like!
Commercially available hutches with runs attached can also be linked together using tunnels.

🐰 Indoor Rabbits
Rabbits can be kept indoors, but it is important that you gradually get your rabbits used to common household sights and sounds.
Rabbits can be free roaming, have their own room / partial room. Any room you give your rabbits access to must be bunny proofed. Rabbits will chew anything....skirting boards, carpets and even house plants and electrical cables, which can be deadly! ☠️
Slipping on hard flooring is also dangerous too.
Indoor rabbits still need space to hide, sleep and toilet.
Whether your bunny lives inside or out daily cleaning is vital for their health. 🧽 A litter tray makes this easier for a quick clean.

πŸ‡ Rabbit Awareness Week πŸ‡
Neutering
Neutering is the act of removing reproductive organs, known as spaying for females and castration for males.
Neutering not only prevents breeding but also prevents diseases linked to the reproductive organs.
πŸ’• Neutering promotes harmonious relationships between bonded pairs.

🩷 Females
Female rabbits reach sexual maturity between 4-6 months of age and are usually spayed around 4-5
months old depending on the breed.
Spaying your bunny extends their life expectancy.
According to the British Small Animal Veterinary Association 80% of unneutered female rabbits develop uterine cancer by the age of 3
Neutering reduces your bunny developing mammary masses, phantom pregnancies and also reduces hormonal aggression.

πŸ’™ Males
Neutering a male rabbit is called castration. They can be castrated as early as 3 months. They can be sexually mature within days of their testicles descending.
Neutering can reduce aggression, scent marking marking and developing testicular cancer. Male rabbits living together will fight and kill unless neutered

🐰 Are you now considering neutering?

πŸ‡ Rabbit Awareness Week πŸ‡
Vaccinations

😒 There are two significant diseases in the UK which are commonly fatal for unvaccinated rabbits.
These diseases can be spread in the air, by insects as well as through physical contact, so even rabbits that live alone and indoors are at risk.
❓What does the vaccination cover?
*Myxomatosis: produces swelling and high fevers before ultimately resulting in death.

*Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD): The are two strains of this which may present with different symptoms. The more outwardly presenting type with bleeding from the orifices followed quickly by death. The more subtle, but equally fatal type shows symptoms which may be subtle such as lethargy and sudden death.☠️

The vaccination we use covers for both of these strains along with myxamatosis.

βœ‹ It's important to note that vaccinating does not completely stop the possibility of contracting these diseases but does significantly reduce the likelihood of suffering these diseases and if contracted, symptoms are much reduced.

Vaccinations need to be given once a year and you can start protecting your bunny from 8 weeks old.
☎️ Book in with one of our experienced rabbit vets who will be happy to discuss any vaccination, preventative health care, nutrition, and any well-being questions.

πŸ‡ Rabbit Awareness Week πŸ‡
Nutrition
πŸ₯•We all love a good snack and our rabbits are no different!
Did you know 85-90% of their diet should be made up of good quality, dust extracted hay? There are many types of hay, some of which are:
Timothy hay, Meadow hay, Alfalfa and hay blends with added herbs flowers. 🌺

Rabbits are constantly eating so love being out in the summer eating grass! β˜€οΈ We don't recommend letting them eat grass clippings as these ferment quickly and can make them feel poorly!
πŸ₯¬ Our floppy eared friends should get a handful of fresh leafy greens, dandelion leaves and veg a day.
They enjoy rocket, romaine lettuce, cauliflower leaves, parsley and mint.
⚠️ Spinach, carrot tops, kale, cabbage and broccoli, apple and savoy cabbage should be given in moderation as they're very high in calcium.

βš–οΈ A rabbit can have 25g per kg of bodyweight a day of good quality nuggets. We recommend nuggets instead of muesli diets as muesli diets can cause selective feeding which leads to many issues such as dental issues and obesity. Always check the feeding guide on the back of the nugget packet as overfeeding on nuggets can reduce their hay intake.

πŸ’• We love our bunny patients and want to keep them as healthy as possible. Looking after their diets keeps them in a good body condition. This reduces the risk of other problems arising such as dental disease, obesity and flystrike. πŸͺ° All very important especially in this hot weather we are having. β˜€οΈ
πŸ’¦ And finally…..fresh water should be offered daily.

βœ‹ If your rabbit has a change in their appetite or eating habits, then please seek urgent veterinary attention.

🐒 Everyone meet Theodore.

His new family have only had him since last week. They brought him in to see our exotics vet Aimie for a health check and to be wormed.
🐒 Tiny Theodore has never visited the vets before so he brought his big brother George along for moral support πŸ˜†

When to worm your tortoise?
πŸͺ± Perform a faecal test if you obtain a new tortoise.
πŸͺ± Do a faecal test twice a year if you’re planning to hibernate them.
Once if you’re not. πŸ’€

β˜€οΈ ☠️ Polite Reminder ☠️ β˜€οΈ

Please do not walk your dogs in the current high temperatures. Walks and runs in this heat can cause heatstroke and even death.
🧣Imagine you trying to walk in this heat in your hat, scarf and coat!

β˜€οΈ Keep your animals out of the direct sun and provide shade.
πŸ’§ Always have access to cool water.
πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Keep exercise to a minimum when it’s hot.
πŸŒ™ Walk after sunset.
Remember….
If you wouldn't walk barefoot on hot pavement for the length of your dog walk, then they definitely can't! 🐾

πŸ₯ If you think your animal is suffering from heatstroke please seek emergency veterinary treatment.

πŸ₯š 🐣It’s baby bird season! 🐣 πŸ₯š
Unfortunately in the past few weeks we have had a surge in fledgling birds being brought into the practice, largely due to perceived injuries with their wings. 😒 This is because whilst they are trying, they haven't quite got the knack of flying yet.
Here’s some advice on helping these babies at this time……..

βœ‹When to leave a fledgling alone?
πŸͺΆ If you see it's well feathered, on the floor, screaming loudly, flapping with no visible injuries - their parents are nearby caring for them πŸͺ±
It’s best to leave their mothers to look after them as they do a better job at parenting than we do.

🐀Please note, their parents may only visit them once or twice a day in some cases when they're learning to fly.

πŸ• If you are worried that animals may attack these fledglings, place the bird in an elevated place in the same area you found it. The parents will continue to care for it with reduced risk.

πŸ₯ When to bring a fledgling to us?
If there is a visible injury such as an open wound.

πŸ’› We appreciate the concern our clients have for wildlife so please seek advise before removing them.

Founded in 2009, Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary began when I was volunteering at my local veterinary practice. They would receive the occasional wild casualty but without any room to keep them long term. Having a couple of spare cages at home, I would offer to help. Before I knew it, I was getting calls....

β˜€οΈ πŸ‡ For all our bunny ownersπŸ‡ β˜€οΈ

While many animals are able to regulate their own body temperature, rabbits need extra help to stay cool.
🐰 Wild rabbits will burrow underground on hot days to avoid the heat of the sun. 🐰 Domestic rabbits do not often have the option to burrow, and some breeds have very thick fur.

😒 Watch out for signs your rabbits are struggling.
πŸ”₯ Signs of heat stroke include;
weakness and lethargy.
panting.
warm.
red ears.
salivating/ confusion/disorientation.
Lack of appetite not willing to move.
convulsions.

Place ceramic or slate tiles in their run.
Frozen water bottles for they to lie next to. 🧊

Dampen your rabbit's ears.

πŸ’•Could you find it in your heart to provide a forever home for either of these lovable cats?πŸ’•

🐱 Tulip was rescued as a stray when she was heavily pregnant and riddled in worms. πŸͺ±
She gave birth to three healthy kittens in foster care and Tulip and Bud, her black male kitten are now looking for a permanent home. 🏑

🩷 Tulip is a young female tabby Bengal crossbreed cat of approximately a year old. She can be rehomed with one other calm and friendly cat but can be nervous around more boisterous animals so is looking for a calm home. 😘 She is the cuddliest, purriest cat you could ever meet and is suitable to be an indoor cat or could be let outside as long as on a quiet street.

πŸ’™ Bud is currently 6-7wks old and is a black short-haired male kitten. He is sociable, confident and athletic and loves playing and climbing. He uses a litter tray and eats dry food. He would need to live with another young cat so he has someone to play with, and due to his young age could get used to a calm dog who would not chase him.

🀞 Rehoming would be subject to RSPCA adoption fee and successful home check. 🀞

πŸ–₯️ Applications are now accepted for new potential owners located within an hours drive away.
If you would like to express your interest or would like more information then please email….

And……we couldn’t resist showing him off to you. πŸ’•
The Continental giant is actually one of the oldest and largest rabbit breeds known to us.
Continental giants are quite larger than your average bunny. 🐰

Hope you’re feeling better now Dobby and we look forward to seeing you soon. 🌑️ β™₯️
