Why do we use fish and rice in our 🐢 food?

We use New Zealand King Salmon, wild caught, New Zealand sourced fish meal and rice in our food because these are not hugely common ingredients in pet food and therefore many dogs are not allergic to them.

This makes our food a great choice for dogs that may have food allergies causing skin issues, gut issues or both. But it's also a nutritious and delicious diet for all dogs.

Has your dog got itchy skin or a sensitive tummy? 🐢 Then you may want to do an elimination diet trial to see if a food allergy could be part of the issue.

Food allergies in dogs, also known as adverse food reactions, can cause skin problems, gastrointestinal problems and sometimes both of these together.😟

They can be very tricky and time consuming to diagnose. This is because the symptoms seen with food allergies can look very similar to the symptoms seen in many other diseases and they can be complicated by other factors such as concurrent environmental allergies, parasites and skin or gut infections.

🩺Unfortunately, there is no quick and easy blood test available for diagnosis. Currently the best way to diagnose a food allergy in dogs is through an elimination diet trial. This involves eliminating possible allergens from your dog’s diet and assessing their response. If done well this will help to determine if the skin and/or gut issues you are seeing are diet related.

How to transition to Genius?

We always recommend that when you make any change to your 🐢 diet that you do it slowly. Some dogs have sensitive tummies and it can take time for them to adjust to a new food.

For most dogs changing out about 1/4 of their old food for 1/4 of their new food every few days is a slow enough transition.

However, for dogs with particularly sensitive tums, you are changing from a raw to a dry diet, or a switching to a diet with very different protein or fat levels, then take it even slower. A 2-3 week transition is more appropriate for these dogs.

I will never forget my first case of chocolate poisoning when I was a newly graduated vet. Barclay was a little Jack Russell who had unfortunately snaffled a large, dark chocolate Easter Bunny 🐰 and gobbled it down tinfoil and all.

🩺 By the time his owners found the small amount of wrapping he had left behind as evidence of his misdeeds he was already showing some of the classic signs of chocolate poisoning – muscle tremors and a very rapid heart rate.

🐢 Fortunately, Barclay’s case ended well. His owners were aware that chocolate can be poisonous to dogs and got him into the veterinary clinic as quickly as possible. We evacuated what was left of the chocolate in his stomach and supported him through an uncomfortable night with intravenous fluids and lots of TLC (tender loving care).

πŸ•πŸŒŠ We've had a refreshing start to the New Year hanging out with some of the local dogs at our favourite swimming spot! πŸ•πŸŒŠ We're home now from a lovely family holiday and I can't wait to get back into getting our nutritious dog food out to New Zealand's 🐢🐾 I spent a lot of time talking dog food with family and friends over the holidays and found that there are a lot of ❓and concerns about pet nutrition. Hi, I’m Paula. I'm a veterinarian and I'm on a mission to create New Zealand's most nutritious, ethical and sustainable pet food. Currently many of New Zealand's pets are fed on a low quality diet of imported, factory farmed chicken bulked up with corn, soy and wheat fillers, loaded with additives and preservatives and shipped half way around the World before it even gets to our shelves. I don't believe this is the best way to feed our pets. So I’ve created a better pet food. One that is wholesome and nutritious for your pet and is free from additives, preservatives and bulky fillers. One that is made from the quality protein grown right here in New Zealand, in our free range farming systems, that don't rely on large amounts of antibiotics to keep animals healthy, and under our stringent animal welfare laws. I want Genius to be the smart choice for your pet. I’m crowdfunding our first commercial batch of our Lamb and Possum dog food on Pledge Me right now. Its made from New Zealand Lamb meat, peas, potatoes, Lamb meal, Flax seed meal, Possum meat and H**p seed oil. It has added vitamins and minerals for 100% complete and balanced nutrition and is naturally preserved with Rosemary oil. It’s high in protein and enriched with essential omega fatty acids.
