“For dogs, especially those who are anxious or traumatised, safety isn’t just about having a calm space to retreat to. It’s about the emotional atmosphere we create around them. If we approach them with softness, patience, and empathy, they can start to feel safe. However, if we’re tense, impatient, or stressed (even if we try to hide it) they’ll sense that too, and it can reinforce their feelings of insecurity.”

Dogs are incredibly in tune with us, much more than we sometimes give them credit for. It’s not just our words or actions they pay attention to, our dogs are constantly reading our emotional states.A study by Müller and her team in 2015 gives us a deeper understanding of this, showing that dogs c...

Halloween is coming up this week so I wrote a new article all about how to set your dog up for success for SPOOKY celebrations and traditions.

It is packed full of helpful advice if door-knockers and freaky costumes might be a big experience for your dog. I've also included clear guidance for "noise phobic" dogs who find fireworks and bangers super scary and I discuss the ethics of dressing dogs up in costume. Because let's face it, not all of them love it!

This article is just for Club Dog members so be sure to sign up so you can access this and all my new articles. Membership starts at just $14.99 per month to get your paws on heaps of cool dog videos and articles.

Are you prepared to look after your pet in an emergency? Preparing a pet emergency ‘grab bag’ is important.

What would you put in yours?

Tomorrow is NZ ShakeOut Day and on behalf of your pets, have you included them in your emergency plans? 🐶🐱

There are lots of things you can do to ensure the welfare of your animals in an emergency. A good place to start is putting together an emergency survival kit and a ‘grab bag’ if you need to evacuate.

Your at-home emergency survival kit should contain enough supplies to last at least three days, whilst your ‘grab bag’ is more portable and easier to grab in a hurry.

Here are some essentials to keep in your ‘grab bag’:
💧 Food and water
🍽️ Bowl
⚕️ Basic first aid kit
🧸 Carrier and blanket/bedding
🐱 Photograph
💉 Veterinary records/medication
🐕 Lead/muzzle for dogs

Being prepared can help save lives, and your animals can’t prepare for themselves. Check out our website for more info: https://bit.ly/3BVdmJE

Whiskey learns to leave it. I like to call this “b***y trap leave it.” A b***y trap is something that I know my dog will want…and so it creates a good opportunity for training. On this occasion my b***y trap was an old zip lock bag with oily egg shells inside.

I have done lots of practice with Whiskey prior to this with him on lead … i allow him to move towards the b***y trap and then stop him with the lead, as him to leave it and then wait him out until he gives me his attention. When he does I praise & reward. We then progressed to working off lead when he was ready.

This training is super important for keeping your dog safe in public. Dogs are natural scavengers and there are heaps of dangerous things for them to pick up while out walking,

Have you discovered how awesome long lines are yet? A long line is a long lead that you can use to give your dog some freedom without actually letting them off the lead. Once you get the hang of walking your dog using a long line, it is a very relaxing.

Benefits of using a long line:

1. Facilitates recall practice, especially around distractions.
2. Allows an owner to stay in control of greetings.
3. Teaches your dog to walk with you ‘in your bubble’
4. Stops unwanted behaviour like chasing critters.
5. Can help a dog manage their frustration when on lead because they have more freedom.
6. Keeps a dog safe if they are not yet trained.
7. Way less stressful for the owner.
8. Facilities taking your dog on a “sniffari”

I'm posting a video of my doggies on various long lines as we navigate a high distraction area with lead control. Warning: managing more than one on a long line at the same time is not for the faint-hearted!

Currently, my favourite long line to recommend for dog owners is the track 'n train made by EzyDog. I like it because it is not too long (4.8 meter) it is non-slip and doesn’t absorb too much water from the grass/sea. You can buy online at pet direct here:

Do you recommend a particular long line?
