On the 3rd of April our team had the pleasure of assisting Hana the Rhodesian Ridgeback who had run into problems during labour and needed a caesarean-section 🏥

We have been lucky enough to receive updates on Hana and her roly-poly bundles over the following weeks, as you can see Mum is doing an amazing job and puppies are thriving🐾❤️

This has definitely been a highlight of our year so far! 🎉

Is your pet up to date with their tick treatment? 🐶🐾

An overseas red blood cell parasite “Babesia gibsoni” has been found in two dogs in Christchurch. This parasite is tick-borne (carried by ticks) and has previously not been found in NZ. It can lead to the disease “babesiosis” - most cases are mild but dogs can experience anaemia, lethargy and other symptoms. 😢

This is a great reminder of how important it is to keep up with regular flea/tick treatment! 💊

If you are unsure if your pet is up to date or wanting to discuss what product is best for your pet, please touch base with our friendly team 😊☎️

"He's like a 4-year-old again!"

These words from Fido's owner Pic Picot are like magic to our ears!🎉

Fido, Pic's beloved guide dog, struggles with osteoarthritis which has been really affecting his mojo; but thanks to the new arthritis treatment called "Beransa" he's feeling like a whole new dog! ❤️

Beransa is an antibody therapy given as a monthly injection. There is also a similar product called Solensia for cats. Both are safe for use long term and can be safely combined with other medications or supplements. Our team would be more than happy to chat with you about whether either of these options could help your stiff or painful pet - give us a call on 035445678 or 035469646📞

You can read more about Beransa here - https://www2.zoetis.co.nz/products-solutions/dogs/beransa

Or the option for cats - "Solensia" here -

Simba’s life changing surgery – for Pectus excavatum "Hollow Breast"

This adorable wee chap came into Nelson Vets for a health check and vaccination with his littermates. His owners had noticed he was not gaining weight as fast as the others in his litter and there was something not quite right about the shape of his chest.

On his physical exam, Simba was diagnosed with pectus excavatum. Pectus excavatum, which is from Latin meaning “hollow breast,” is a chest wall deformity seen frequently in humans and less often in veterinary patients. In cases like Simba, the sunken chest is severe enough that pressure is put on the heart and lungs, causing trouble breathing, exercise intolerance and growth delays. Simba would get puffed very easily, and the x-rays of his chest make it easy to see why – His sternum was pushing up into the space where his heart and lungs should be.

The key in these more severe – even life-threatening – cases, is to catch it early. Luckily for Simba, this was picked up at his very first health check.
To move the sternum into the correct position, surgery was required. Simba was anaesthetised, and our Veterinarian Dr Grace Miller did surgery to place an external splint on his chest that was connected to his sternum with a series of sutures. Our senior nurses Teigan and Daniella managed his tricky anaesthetic and Simba recovered well.

Much to the delight of our team we got to see him frequently in the weeks that followed for his check-ups.
It’s now time for celebration! His dedicated owners have taken great care of him and his healing has gone well. On Monday, Simba had his splint removed. While we are sad that we won’t get as many fluffy Simba cuddles, it is amazing to see the improvement in his breathing and energy levels now that he has space in his chest and he can live a long and full life. Go Forth Simba!

Fudge the duck had a big hidden problem that brought her in to see our team recently. Read on for Fudge’s fascinating journey and outcome!

Fudge’s owner called us concerned as Fudge was losing the ability to stand or walk. Luckily for Fudge we have a specialist exotics vet – Dr Rachel Stanyer. After a thorough examination including X-rays and a scope, Fudge was taken through to theatre with a team made up of Dr Rachel Stanyer, Dr Adam Stanyer and vet nurses Daniella and Laura (who both have extra experience with exotic pets).

Multiple ectopic unshelled eggs were discovered in her abdomen (where they definitely don’t belong!) and as you can see some were super big! The body had attempted to “wall off” the egg yolks, basically adding layers on top of them. They may have been growing in this way over a long period of time before they started to press on nerves and become too heavy for Fudge to handle. In surgery most were able to be removed, and a contraceptive implant was put in to stop Fudge’s body trying to produce any more eggs. Fudge stayed in with our team for some TLC and tube feeding and then went home to her very loving family the next day.

Fudge is doing really well at home; she is much more mobile and comfortable now. We are so glad we were able to help her!

❤ Who doesn’t love a story with a happy ending? 📖

Mabel and Holly certainly have a story to tell, and it does have a happy ending – thanks to a very observant owner who was quick to seek help, and some great work from our team here at Nelson Vets.

It all started last Friday when after a perfectly normal day Mabel started to seem unwell. She was vomiting, weak, trembling and very uncomfortable! Her owner knew this was something that needed immediate attention and rushed Mabel in to see us. Mabel was swiftly hospitalised and the team started investigating the cause of her symptoms. By this time her owner had gone home and found to her horror that their other Labrador Holly was now showing the same symptoms, and rushed her in also.

It quickly became clear they had managed to get their noses into something that wasn’t very good for them, and they did it at lightning speed when no one was watching…. how very Labrador of them! In hospital they had further tremoring which turned into seizures. The vets and nurses worked quickly to stabilise them, control their seizures and treat their other symptoms. Dr Kelly devised a treatment plan for overnight and our very skilled vet nurse Jamie stayed overnight to deliver intensive monitoring and nursing. Mabel and Holly turned the corner in the early hours of the morning. We were all very excited to see them return to their happy bouncy selves and be able to go home to their relieved family later the next day.

We will never know for sure what toxin they managed to ingest, they had been out walking with some doggy friends that day and could have consumed karaka berries or mushrooms, or perhaps found some discarded mouldy food? All of these things are dangerous toxins for dogs and can be fatal. Signs to look out for are vomiting, trembling, weakness, tremoring or seizures. It’s a good reminder to check your backyard from a dog’s point of view – can they access compost piles, decaying food, or poisonous plants? Mabel and Holly couldn’t, so they must have accessed something outside of the home. Karaka trees are common around our region including at the back beach where many dogs love to go.

We are so glad that our team was able to give Mabel and Holly such a happy ending to their story. 🥰🐾

Our team had a very exciting day yesterday when Toot the goat came to visit us! 🐐🎉

Toot had come on a long car ride with his Mum to see if our team could help with a little problem he had - a retained testicle up in his abdomen! Our team was certainly happy to take up the challenge💪

Toot went through to theatre where his anaesthetic was managed under the expert eye of our head nurse Bec. Keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery was performed by Dr Adam and Dr Jonathan to retrieve the sneaky testicle. Toot woke up snuggled up in Bec's lap and is now happily back home as though nothing ever happened! We are so thrilled we were able to help ❤️
