In the past, experts believed that cats were not susceptible to leptospirosis infection, but it has been demonstrated that cats do get infected and are capable of developing antibodies.

Feline leptospirosis was first described in 1972; however, reports of clinical disease in pet cats have always been rare. The infection has been associated with the consumption of infected prey, with outdoor cats being at increased risk of infection.

Some cats with antibodies against Leptospira species have been found to have signs associated with kidney disease and/or histopathological evidence of kidney inflammation. Through PCR, several studies have shown renal carriage of Leptospira species (with an epidemiological study confirming the presence of Leptospira DNA in the urine of cats for more than 8 months after infection). Therefore, cats can be chronic reservoir hosts for the bacteria and a possible risk factor for infection for other mammalian species.

The pathogenesis of leptospirosis in cats remains unknown, although it is assumed to be similar to that in humans and dogs. The best treatment for cats is undefined, with specific and supportive therapeutic recommendations extrapolated only from dogs.

The main serovars belong to serogroups Australis, Autumnalis, Canicola and Sejroe, although there are geographical variations.

Hot summer days mean our furry friends need extra hydration! 🐶💦 Remember to keep their water bowl full and bring water on the go. Frozen treats and shaded areas also help beat the heat. Let's keep our pups safe and cool this summer! 🌴🌞🐾

The heat is on! As the temperature rises, so does the need for our dogs to stay hydrated. Make sure you give them plenty of water.

As a general rule, 1 ounce of water per pound. Refer to the guide on the image post.

All dog breeds have a third eyelid, also known as the "nictitating membrane," which is located in the lower eyelid and provides additional eye protection. The associated tear gland provides the eye with a substantial amount of moisture. It protrudes from the bottom or corner of the dog's eye if it prolapses. The enlarged region appears red and inflamed, the predominant symptom of a cherry eye and the basis of its name. The longer the gland pr*****ed without treatment, the greater the risk of complications such as conjunctivitis. When a dog paws, scratches, or rubs the damaged eye, it might cause more irritation (Hoskin, 2016).

Tovee was brought to our clinic for a check-up because of a pr*****ed third eyelid (First Picture). And there is nothing more lovely than seeing Tovee’s pwadorable healthy eyes again(Second Picture). Thanks to his furparents for immediately bringing him over for treatment.
