Ringworm is the common name given to a fungal infection of the skin, hair, and nails. Ringworm infections can occur in humans and in all domesticated species of animals.

The common name of ringworm is somewhat misleading, in that it is not an infection caused by a worm, and the infected areas are not always ring-shaped.

The organisms that cause ringworm infections belong to a specialized group of fungi known as dermatophytes, so the medical name for this disease is dermatophytosis.

Clinical signs of dermatophytosis can include hair loss, scaling, crusting, erythema, papules, hyperpigmentation, and variable pruritus.

The most common way to treat ringworm in cats is to use a combination of topical therapy (application of creams, ointments, or shampoos) and systemic oral therapy (administration of anti-fungal drugs by mouth). For treatment to be successful, all environmental contamination must also be eliminated

Meet Nova, who came to visit us last week with having lost a bit of weight and finding it difficult to eat.
This poor cat has a very large ranula in his mouth that needs to be removed.

What is a ranula? A ranula is a fluid collection, or cyst, that forms in the mouth under the tongue. It is filled with saliva (spit) that has leaked out of a damaged salivary gland.

When a gland is damaged, usually from trauma, it can begin to leak saliva into surrounding tissue. The saliva accumulation irritates the tissue, causing an inflammatory response to wall off the collection of fluid.

Jerry was suffering from urinary problems, most likely caused by inflammation of bladder known as feline lower urinary tract disease.
Jerry's FLUTD caused a urethral obstruction, stopping poor jerry being able to pass urine and causing him some pain and discomfort.
Ultrasound revealed full bladder along with inflammation, sand and small stones, if left untreated can cause death.
In Pakistan, cases of urine blockage is quickly becoming one of the biggest problems in cats. The causes of urine blockage includes:
* Poor diet plan or poor quality food
* Diet with high calcium oxalate and mg phosphate
* Renal disorder
* Stress factors
How to Prevent?
* Increasing water intake
* Urinary specific food
* Cats with FLUTD shouldn't be left alone for long periods of time.

Let's talk about feline heart diseases

Cats do not normally develop the common diseases of humans with heart disease.

Heart disease can be divided into two categories, congenital and adult onset forms.

In congenital disease, the heart defect is present at birth.

Adult onset heart disease can occur as the result of damage to the heart structure at some time during the cat's life, resulting in abnormal function.
The most common type of adult onset disease in the cat is cardiomyopathy, a disease affecting the heart muscle.

* The most common signs of heart disease in cats are:

poor appetite
weight loss
lethargy
increased respiratory rate and effort
sudden collapse
sudden hind leg paralysis accompanied by pain due to thromboembolism (blood clots) which may be referred to as a ‘saddle thrombus’
stunted growth (kittens).
Cats with heart disease have no specific dietery requirements, as long as the diet contains adequate levels of the amino acid taurine. Taurine is essential in cat diets to prevent dilated cardiomyopathy. It is important that your cat's body weight be maintained in an optimal range, neither overweight nor underweight. It may be necessary to adjust the calorie content of the cat's diet in order to do this.
