Avian Influenza in Birds:

Avian influenza is a viral infection found in domestic poultry and a wide range of other birds. Wild waterfowl and shorebirds are often asymptomatic carriers. Birds often show respiratory signs if low pathogenicity strains attack, on the other hand in case of high pathogenicity strains, organ failure and death may occur. Drop in egg production is a great threat for economy. Avian influenza viruses are type A orthomyxoviruses (Alpha influenza virus or Influenza virus A).

Transmission:
Ingestion
Inhalation
Infected f***s
Respiratory secretions
Fomites (equipment, clothing)

Signs and Symptoms:
Coughing
Ocular and nasal discharge
Swollen infraorbital sinuses
Sneezing
Decreased egg production & Fertility
Edema of head
Subcutaneous hemorrhages on shanks
Necrosis of comb & wattles
Dropping wings
Ova Rupture (in layers)
Cyanosis and death in severe cases

Prevention & Control:
👉Biosecurity Strategies
👉Vaccination

To avoid Zoonotic risk:
Avoid contact with infected birds.
Consume Cooked poultry meat.

Infectious Tracheobronchitis/Kennel Cough:

It is a highly contagious respiratory disease. Dogs commonly contract kennel cough at places where large amounts of canines congregate, such as boarding and daycare facilities, dog parks, training groups, and dog shows. Dogs can spread it to one another through airborne droplets, direct contact (e.g., touching noses), or contaminated surfaces (including water/food bowls). It’s highly treatable in most dogs but can be more severe in puppies younger than six months of age and immunocompromised dogs.

Signs:
Paroxysms of harsh
Dry Coughing
Retching and gaging
Fever
Depression and anorexia
Purulent nasal discharge
Productive cough in puppies.

Prevention:
Good management is very important. Good nutrition, hygiene, nursing care and correction of pre-disposing factors in the environment is very important.
Avoid stress
Vaccination should be properly done as per schedule against relevant viruses.

Want to Change your Pet's Food?

If you will change your pet's food immediately, it will cause many health issues for your pet like:
👉Food refusal
👉Stomach upset
👉Diarrhea
👉Vomiting
👉Excess gas or constipation.

The best method for switching food is to gradually mix an increasing amount of the new product with old product over a period of time un-till the animal is receiving only the new product. This is very important so that you don't disrupt your pet's digestive pattern. Hence, food transition should take one to two weeks.

If at any time your pet starts having loose stools or appears constipated, slow the rate at which you are switching and call your veterinarian.

Panadol Toxicity in Cats 🐱

As Panadol contains paracetamol/Acetaminophen, it can cause a decrease in the red blood cell's ability to carry oxygen. Liver damage may also occur. Cats are deficient in glucuronyl transferase and therefore have limited capacity to excrete this drug. Hence, this drug becomes a poison for the cats. As a result, the cats become depressed, weak, cyanotic , icteric and death may occur.

Precaution:
👉Never ever give this drug to your pet in any condition.
👉Consult the Veterinarian immediately, if your pet intake this drug nonsensically or intentionally.

02/10/2022

Laryngeal Hemiplegia in Horse;

Left recurrent laryngeal hemiplegia is characterized by paresis or paralysis of the left arytenoid cartilage and vocal fold. It manifests clinically as exercise intolerance and inspiratory respiratory noise (“roaring”) during exercise and known as ROARERS.

Pathophysiology:

Progressive loss of the large myelinated fibers in the distal portion of the recurrent laryngeal nerves results in neurogenic atrophy of the intrinsic laryngeal musculature, the most crucial of which is the cricoarytenoideus dorsalis muscle. Axonal dystrophy of the left recurrent nerve occurs more commonly than the right, perhaps due to its extended length around the base of the heart.
Loss of neuromuscular control of the abductor muscle results in collapse of the arytenoid cartilage and vocal fold, which reduces the glottal cross-sectional area. The resistance to airflow necessitates greater respiratory effort. Because of the pliable nature of the glottis, the exaggerated subatmospheric pressure in the airway results in further collapse of the arytenoid cartilage and exacerbation of the impedance to airflow.

The characteristic inspiratory whistle results from resonance within the open ventricle on the affected side.

Clinical Signs :
●Inspiratory noise during exercise.
●Exercise intolerance.
●Affected horses are asymptomatic at rest but may have an unusual whinny.

Treatment :

Treatment recommendations vary depending on theb;
●severity/grade
●the breed
●the age
●the use of your horse.

There are 4 treatment options, as described below:
¹●Prosthetic laryngoplasty (a "tie-back surgery").
²●Ventriculectomy +/- cordectomy, ³●Arytenoidectomy
⁴●Neuromuscular pedicle graft.

A poor Coco was presented with history of accident.
General Examination revealed that forelimbs had no issue but she was unable to put weight on hindlimbs and there was no sensation. Spinal X-ray of Anterior-Posterior and Lateral view was recommended to make your any kind of fracture.
Here is attached X-ray that unfortunately shows fracture of vertebral column.

Fractures, can result in pain and disability. Vertebral compression fractures can have devastating long-term effects in terms of
●Diminished quality of life.
●Decreased independence.
●Increased morbidity and mortality.

So, in this case there was paralysis of hindlimbs that was impossible to recover.

Euthanasia was recommended to the owner for peacfull death of poor little soul.

A cat is presented with intense itching and scratching at ears. Ear Mite Test is done to confirm the cause. Unfortunately the result was positive. Appropriate treatment and cleaning of ears was done to ensure good health.

Basically animals' ears contain ear mites.
Otodectes cynot is the species that veterinarians encounter most frequently.

Despite its name, this species is also in charge of 90% of feline ear mite infections.

In the context of veterinary medicine,
Cat ear mite infections can manifest as a condition that causes :

●Severe itching in one or both ears.
●Leads to scratching at the affected ear.

●Also possible is the production of exceptionally dark ear wax (cerumen).

●It is possible to see one or both ear pinnas held at an unusual or flattened angle in cats with upright ears that can adjust ear direction.

Ensure your pets' good health and get rid of ear mites.

WORLD RABIES DAY 2022!

Rabies is an acute, progressive, incurable viral encephalitis. This zoonotic disease has the highest case fatality of any infectious disease.
All mammals are believed susceptible to rabies virus and other lyssaviruses. "Dog vaccination" is the single most useful and cost-effective measure for modern rabies prevention and control.
Pre-exposure vaccination should be given to all persons at risk of rabies exposure, including veterinarians.
Human rabies can be prevented after exposure by proper wound care, infiltration of all bite sites with rabies immunoglobulins, and the administration of several doses of human rabies vaccine. Rabies can be prevented by taking care of both Humans & Animals. This is the base of this year's theme by GARC:

How to prevent Rabies?

Rabies could be fatal if ignored. Once rabies virus enters in the body, the chance of death will be 99.99% so it is very important to prevent this. You need to consider certain points:
1- Vaccination is most important. Get your pets vaccinated according to proper schedule.
2- Get yourself Pre-exposure vaccination. If you are un vaccinated and dog bite occurs, immediately get Post-exposure vaccination.
3- Never tease the stray dogs or any other wild animals, try to understand their behaviour and stay away! Teach your children in this regard.
4- If a dog bites, wash the wound thoroughly and consult your doctor immediately.

Advantage of Vaccination:

Generating a protective amount of antibodies to develop immunity against communicable diseases.
Vaccinations are crucial for safeguarding your furry family member.
In the most straightforward sense, a cat or dog receiving a vaccination receives a disease-enabling organism to boost his immune system and message to the body how to combat those diseases in the future.
