(Wound Myiasis)
Myiasis is the infestation of vertebrate animals by larvae (maggots) of any species of fly. In horses, the typical and most widespread of such parasites are species of internal bot flies (Gasterophilus spp.), but many other maggots (e.g. blow flies and/or flesh flies) can facultatively infest equines externally. Although none of these typically poses a serious threat to hosts.
Wound myiasis requires debridement with irrigation to eliminate the larvae from the wound or surgical removal. Application of trichlorophon, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, chloroform, chloroform in light vegetable oil, or ether, with removal of the larvae under local anesthesia, has been advocated for wound myiasis.
It is a serious management condition that strictly needs to concern. Maggots are however a source of therapy by eating the dead necrotic tissues but on the other end they cause serious harm to animals. By infecting the hoof, it may cause lameness as well. So in order to prevent them we need to provide a horse with good management with a principle of disinfection and biosecurity.
