Santa Cruz Island Horses

Santa Cruz Island Horses We are dedicated to preserving the breed and history of the Santa Cruz Island Horse.

One of the most endangered breeds in the world, the SANTA CRUZ ISLAND HORSE, may be the last of its kind, unless careful conservation and breeding programs are successful. These small Colonial Spanish horses, with their calm dispositions were selected for use in cattle ranching and for work on family farms. For almost two hundred years the SANTA CRUZ ISLAND HORSE lived relatively undisturbed in th

e semi-feral environment of Santa Cruz Island. Through natural selection they remained a hardy breed genetically distinct from the horses that remained on the mainland. Thanks to extraordinary conservation efforts of Christina Nooner (The Sunshine Sanctuary) and breed stewards El Campeon Farms on behalf of this unique and gentle breed, the SANTA CRUZ ISLAND HORSE population is slowly growing in numbers.

Stars and Stripes recap Pt. 2 from our Stars and Stripes Summer Spectacular- Working Equitation Show ft. International Judge Jose Benito and Doreen Annette Atkinson.

We could't be more proud of our SCI team of riders, Hayley Pelton, Kassidy Miller, and Abigail Anne Followwill and of course, our horses! Shout out to our ECF grooms who keep our horses looking sharp 24/7. Thank you to our coach, Christy Reich, who juggled running the show, reading tests AND coaching us in the warm up all at the same time.

Shout out to our whole SCI team for all the ways they step in and help throughout the show-
Blum, Larsen Karina L Rothschild, Kassidy Miller, Hayley Pelton, Abigail Anne Followwill, Christy Reich, and all of our ECF staff!

El Campeons ChaCha showed at L4, her son Carlos showed at L2, and her daughter Catalina showed at L1. Marisol, one of our SCI/Lusitano outcrosses also had her first time in the show ring and she knocked it out of the park!
Here are some highlights-

Abigail and ChaCha- L4 Open Champion and Reserve High Point Champions in the Open Division.

Kassidy and Catalina- L1 Open champions and High Point Champions for the Open Division

Kassidy and Carlos- L2 Open Champions (they especially knocked it out of the park in their speed round, pulling out all the flying lead changes like they've been doing it for years!)

Hayley and Marisol- L1 Open Reserve Champions..very first show ever for this mare!

Hayley and Christmas aka Norfleets Will Do (He's not an SCI horse but he belongs to the ECF family)- L4 Reserve Champions in the Open Division. They had beautiful rides all around!

STORY TIME AND SHOW RECAP Pt.1 (Better late than never 😉
You never know when you will stumble across something that will change your life or the lives of your horses forever.

About 7 years ago Christy learned about Working Equitation for the first time.

I remember her coming back so excited after watching WE at Andalusian World Cup and sharing with our team, "You guys there's this thing called Working Equitation, I think we could totally do this. It's a combination of everything we are already working on."

The SCI horses had just started getting out in the public at local dressage, western dressage, and ranch riding shows but Christy thought this new sport would be a particularly good fit to showcase the unique characteristics of the SCI breed.

Susan L Watkins was our first point of contact. She is a WE legend and has helped so many people get started. She gave us our first Working Equitation clinic here at El Campeon and the rest is history!

We've never looked back. After hosting 15+ shows over the past five years our excitement for where the sport is going just continues to grow!

Our Stars and Stripes show featured not one, but TWO esteemed judges: International WAWE judge Jose Benito and USAWE judge and WAWE candidate Doreen Annette Atkinson.

Thank you so much to ECF owners Kelly and Lou Gonda for making this event possible, for opening up their home, for their dinner sponsorship and all the prizes that they donated. It really does take a village. Thank you to our volunteers, our staff, officials, and our sponsors who make these shows possible and fun! Shout out to Purina, Performance Equine Bodywork, El Campeon Farms for sponsoring our prizes at the show. And thank you to our vendors Event Trailer River Apparel Originals.

The three days that followed for USA Working Equitation's Train to Win Clinic with Jose Benito was nothing short of exceptional. Thank you so much to Kellee Campbell, Christy Reich and others who made that possible. It was a world class education and so inspiring to see all of the upper level riders and horses.

What a year 2023 was! The results are in and as we couldn't be more proud of our team..humans and horses!

El Campeon's ChaCha and Abigail Anne Followwill:
🥈2nd in the NATION in level 3
🥇1st in the REGION in level 3
ChaCha bumped up to level 3 this year and really gave it
everything she had.
Their scores started out in the upper 60's and
reached the low 70's by the end of the year. We are so proud of
ChaCha and the way that she represents this breed. She has the
perfect mix of reasonableness and competitiveness! 🤩
Another big moment for her was performing in our first ever SCI
quadrille for the Ride On fundraiser event at ECF. She danced
danced side by side with Truffles, our SCI stallion, and behaved
like the perfect lady that she is.

Norfleets Will Do...aka CHRISTMAS and Hayley Pelton:
🥉3rd in the NATION in level 3
🥈2nd in the REGION in level 3
Hayley and Christmas had a SUPER year and really gave Abby
and ChaCha a run for their money! Who doesn't love some
friendly competition? One of the last shows ChaCha and Xmas
had a perfect tie in their dressage round with both scoring
70.517. Christmas pulled ahead the EOH round to take a 1st
place overall for that show. 😎

El Campeons Carlos Kassidy Miller:
Carlos is our youngest one in the bunch and only 5yrs old (almost 6) and one of our SCI/Lusitano crosses. This was such a big year for him with so many "firsts". He only competed in level 2, novice A in WE and in training level for in the USDF show.

🥇He had his first show ever at our FALLOWEEN WE show in November and then a few weeks later completed his first USDF dressage show. He is still learning how to relax in new environments but Kassidy is doing a great job helping him build confidence and letting him find his way.
He LOVED the challenge of the EOH course and managed to come in 2ND with a 66%!
Carlos also starred in the SCI quadrille alongside ChaCha, Truffles, and Monterey. He was the baby in the group but held himself together beautifully!

Thank you so much to André Ganc and Frederico Bernardino for the coaching throughout the year!

Thank you so much to our whole SCI and ECF team... Christy Reich Hayley Pelton Abigail Anne Followwill Blum, Patricia Larsen, Karina L Rothschild and of course and Lou Gonda, owners of ECF and the Santa Cruz Island Horses

This little red horse. 🤩 She is one in a million. Every ride is a privilege and to top it off, she actually LOVES to compete. As we walk into the ring her heartbeat quickens and so does her confidence.

Chestnut mares can get a bad reputation but to be honest, I love riding a horse who talks back. When her reactions are honored and considered, she is always happy to try. When I get tunnel vision, she reminds me she’s not a robot and not to ride her like one.😉

I couldn’t be more proud of our rides over the FALLOWEEN Working Equitation shows. There are so many areas that can always be improved- helping keep her supple through all the excitement is our greatest goal.

There were a few “mini goals” that we had going into it… taking more time to prepare for the bull line so she feels supported and doesn’t surge forward. She nailed it with an 8 score✅

She has a great sidepass but we’ve had a couple times of knocking one of the poles down. So this show we just focused on prioritizing the set up and keeping everything slow and rhythmic. She nailed it both days✅🤩

We took 2nd one day and 3rd on the second day with a couple scores in the low 70’s! Our class was super competitive with first place getting a whopping 77%..shout out to for truly exceptional rides and to on Christmas- they always keep us on our toes as we are almost always neck and neck!
Thank you for stunning shots!

We are just a little obsessed with this handsome guy…🤩

Carlos was such a super boy at his first Working Equitation show. There was the expected nerves and excitement that comes with the added energy in the atmosphere, BUT he stepped up to the plate and Kassidy did a stellar job helping him end on a relaxed and confident note each day.

On day 2, he had a beautiful and smooth EOH round with a 66.4, coming in 2nd place in that phase and landing in 3rd place overall!

Shout out to our favorite …..
Their saddles are incredibly made and are perfect for our
shorter-backed horses.

Thank you for all the beautiful shots! 📸
