Education at its best 🖤

Until a year ago, I was a trainer with a very force free approach. I didn’t believe there was a place for aversives in dog training. I didn’t have a dog that required them. Lucky me!

Until I got this chap. My very much adored kelpie, Evo. Bred to move HUGE flocks and herds of livestock out in rural Australia. A hard-headed dog, with a mega independent streak.

I worked hard with him. I’m a trainer. I laid my foundations, as I have done successfully with my other 4 dogs before him. They worked, to a point. And then, they didn’t.

I was fully prepared to give him a breed-appropriate outlet. Alongside the other work I give my dogs, I have my own sheep, meaning I can work my own dogs regularly on stock. However, my small flock of flighty sheep was far too jumpy for him to work, and he was becoming dangerous out and about in any sort of proximity to sheep.

So, you may say, just keep him on a lead! Problem solved. Well, not really.

Management can and does fail. I have heard it from countless clients. I have had it fail myself.

I also live, with sheep on my property, and surrounding it on 3 sides. Everywhere we turn, there are sheep. There’s no avoiding them.

Keep him on a lead in the garden? We have a large garden and keeping him on the lead would be unfair. He’s an incredibly active, working bred dog, who would end up spending his entire life on a lead.

We also encountered prey drive issues out and about, particularly around deer. His recall was fantastic, but once we moved, our walks were either full of deer, or sheep and he could rip a long line out of your hands to chase something particularly tempting.

So, I decided to bite the bullet and e-collar train. Controversial, particularly online.

But, the absolute best thing I ever did.

The alternative solutions I had suggested were:

Keep him on the lead - I buy good quality leads, but they have failed on me before
Move house - we’ve moved to a dream house, not an option
Avoid places with sheep etc - hard when they’re in the garden
Long line - he could still pull a long line out of reach
Train him - he was trained to a very high level and we had reached the limits via force free methods.

Management fails.

I went through the process of conditioning him properly to the e-collar. I spent ages ensuring I got it right, he understood what was expected and that he knew how to switch it off. I invested in a pricey bit of kit, and I went about it by the book.

It’s transformed his life.

He can romp around the garden, he can walk through my sheep without batting an eyelid, he can walk off lead on the hills and he can enjoy walking in the forest even when deer run out in front of us.

For him, that wasn’t ever going to be an option without it.

Nothing was more reinforcing than chasing.

And it was going to get him killed. He’d have been shot, or hit by a car, or lost. All because I wouldn’t open my mind to using different tools.

Am I suggesting every dog requires one? Absolutely not. But there are MANY cases where they save lives. It’s both saved and enriched his.

He’s happy, he lives his best life. He hikes everywhere with us, he’s well mannered and fully reliable off the lead. He knows the rules, and that’s the key.

He’s not suppressed. He can still go off and be a dog. He tears around the garden with our other dogs, he sniffs and does dog things. But he’s safe when doing it all.

I see a lot of judgement towards these tools from people owning dogs who would never require these tools. That’s great. And that’s also not a problem. But it is completely unfair to demonise the use of a tool which you haven’t taken the time to fully understand. I was 100%, without a doubt, against them before I took the time to understand how they worked and how they were used.

It’s imperative that they’re used with a trainer well versed in using them. It’s also crucial that the equipment used is good quality and not something cheap from Amazon or eBay. It’s an investment, but one that is so necessary for a lot more dogs than you might realise.

Take the time to understand others’ points of view. There is truly not a one-size-fits-all approach in dog training and my change of opinion has opened up a whole new world for all of my dogs ❤

When it’s moms turn to train and you already know everything
- Barkley aka class clown 🤡

Randi has been working with Barkley for 10 days now, and the progress is amazing! Erin wanted to gain for control over Barkley, and explore off leash training.
With some more consistency from Erin, this team should be off their longline soon. ☺️

Both of these boys killed it yesterday at Home Depot!
Trainee, Elvis has made some serious progress the last 3 lessons we’ve had.

Elvis mainly struggles with “ reactivity “ now while that word sounds like a negative, Elvis’s reactivity is NOT!
He tends to get overly excited meeting new dogs, vocalizing A LOT! 🤣

While we do want our dogs to be social with others, we train for neutrality. We want Elvis to be able to see another dog in public with a neutral reaction.

Elvis working with demo dog Atticus was a huge breakthrough. Elvis had a not so great encounter with another black GSD, leaving Elvis a bit more on edge around larger dogs.
These 2 yesterday became the bestest of friends at the end of the lesson 🖤
Keep up the good work Sue!

Fact check!
Stop correcting your dogs for looking at another dog!🤗

This little dude set the bar today for his first trip to Home Depot!
Elvis had his 4th lesson today and killed it, Sue and Elvis have been working on better engagement in public and a little bit of reactivity.
Today we stumbled upon another dog, and couldn’t be happier watching Elvis learn to ignore. 🖤

PROGRAM PRICE LIST!
We’ve had quite a few messages asking about our pricing and if we do payment plans.

Yes, we do offer payment plans.
But payment plans are not discussed further until an in person evaluation is done. Why?

As trainers, we HAVE to see the dog in person to gauge the behaviors you’re struggling with or the severity of reactivity / aggression your dog has. (reactivity / aggression is not applied to all dogs)
This helps us form a plan and guide your dog to the BEST program.

We don’t want to waste either parties time. Plus our evaluation allows you to get to know us. ☺️

3rd class is a wrap!
Randi and I were both incredibly impressed with everyone’s progress, but little Sunny became the star student this week!

Sunny is a 6 month old Dachshund that joined our class with the end goals of gaining confidence, learning how to engage around distractions and freeshaping her basic obedience!
So far we are hitting those marks, this class Sunny’s owner nailed her engagement homework. 🖤

Interested in our classes but want to know what’s taught?
While we do go over basic obedience ( sit, down , stay, wait, leash walking, etc) and manners, each classes end goal is different.
At the beginning of our class we ask each student what their 3 END goals for this class is.
Once there’s an understanding, our class curriculum is formed around our students and their dogs.

After every class, homework is sent out to each student to help remember what was taught and what your homework until the next class. This helps us hold you guys to a higher standard and gives more communication between student and trainer.

We have one more class starting and looking for 4 students!
This will be our last beginners class of this year, we’ll be starting advance with our current groups after. ☺️
Let’s give your pups a head start before the Holidays!

Introducing, Day Train!

This service may be new to you, but one of our absolute favorite programs to run!
Day train is almost like day care… but with a major twist.

While daycares do provide a great outlet for owners who are 9-5 workers, you tend to over look it as convenience based vs long term - benefits.

Dogs function as “Monkey see, Monkey Do”, AKA “Patterning A Behavior”. PAB can be known as a positive pattern or a negative pattern.

Negative EX. Dog A see’s another dog being rewarded for jumping, jumping dog is now being pet, Dog A does the same thing, rewarded = reinforced. But once Dog A goes home, and jumps on their owners, they are discourage.
This starts to confuse your dog! There’s little to no communication on what behaviors your dog NEEDS to understand!

Positive EX. Dog A see’s dog B sit in front of trainer - gets rewarded for no jumping .
While dog Dog A isn’t going to IMMEDIATELY sit for treat. Once Dog A enters the space of Dog B the trainer is going to reinforce the sit prior to any sort of confrontation! Rewarding for the repetition of sitting in front anytime they approach! Once Dog A returns home, trainer and owner communicate about how to continue their training at home. Making the reinforcements even more consistent!

Dog B in this scenario will be a “ Senior Demo Dog “ who is already finished in Obedience. This helps influence Dog A for EVERY scenario, almost like having a sturdy crutch to lean on.

Our day train program is built around conveniency. What’s our twist?

Our trainer comes to your home to pick up your dog before the busy work day starts! Taking them on a fun field trip to local parks, downtown bay city, animal friendly stores or to the trainers home!
Once you are home and settled in, we will make our way back to drop off your happy and tired pup.

**** Pick up and drop off times are based off your schedule ***

7 Day Jump Start - ( 6 months and under ) - $350

This program is perfect for any pup under the age of 6 months.
This jump start will help your pup get prepared for the outside world, working on slowly socializing and free shaping obedience. It is critical to start socializing young, as it will reduce your chances of fear reactivity towards human and dogs.
