This handsome boy was a giant purrbug when he came to see us to get neutered this week. Once a kitten on the streets, a Feral Feline Project foster has helped him learn that humans are pretty cool and turned him in to a happy house panther. Feral Feline Project does a lot of TNR, but also works with fosters to socialize kittens who can then find forever homes!

Argh Mateys! šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø This little Pirate is Winx. UPDATE. Sheā€™s all healed now and growing up. See new photo in comments below.

Her eye patch is to help her surgery site heal. We have been working with Forever Fortunate Felines to help Winx heal from an eye removal surgery that was done elsewhere. Unfortunately, the site had become infected and we had to perform multiple procedures to fix it. The great news is that Winx is a strong little swashbuckler and is on the mend! ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Mavery doesn't have small teeth. She has gums that are covering over her teeth (gingival hyperplasia). Gingival hyperplasia can create pockets where hair, debris, bacteria, and tartar can accumulate and lead to faster progression of periodontal disease. In Mavery's case it was also hiding that she had multiple painful fractured teeth. Pictures below show before dental surgery and after. Painful teeth were extracted and gingival tissue cut back. Mavery is with MCP Rescue and Outreach and now has a healthy and fresh smile.

Chico couldnā€™t stop giving our Technician all the hugs and kisses when he came in for his vaccine appointment. This hunk walked in and said ā€œI love you guys!ā€ and showered us with affection. Midwest Working Dog Rescuepulled this guy out of Chicago Animal Care and Control and in to a foster home. He is still learning what personal space is, but who needs that anyway šŸ¤£

Khalie is just the sweetest girl that she couldnā€™t help wagging her tail, even though she was still recovering from anesthesia. Khalie is with Chi-Town Pitties, Inc. and came in to be spayed this week. We loved her and wanted to share just how sweet this little pittie lady is! P.S. some more cute pictures in comments

This kitten is so tiny she fits in a pocket, and thatā€™s why her name is Polly! This little bottle baby is being fostered by our very own Dr. Kompare and was rescued by Community Animal Rescue Effort - CAREwhen she was abandoned at their shelter. We have gotten the joy of watching this little one grow over the past 3 weeks since she comes to work so she can get her feedings. Sheā€™s just too dang cute, itā€™s pretty hard to get any work done! P.S. more cuteness in comments

Chip is here to say hello cause he is our Rescue of the Week! Newman Nation: Senior Pets United has been caring for this senior gent for 2 years and he recently lost his bonded pair- his biological mom. His foster had the following to say ā€œHe is finding his new normal and soaking up all the extra attention. He loves going on outdoor adventures and moonlighting as a vacuum cleaner indoors. He is the cuddliest snuggle bug and house sentinel. Weā€™re hoping the tragedy of losing his mom will turn into the blessing of a forever family of his very own.ā€ Chip came to see us for a dental to be in tip-top shape so he can find his forever home!

Squee! This kitten is just too darn cute not to make our Rescue of the Week. Cali is being treated for an upper respiratory infection and has some growing to do, but she is in a Cat Care And Rescue Inc foster home that is helping her recover. We hope we brightened your day with her adorableness!

Our Rescue of the Week is this handsome trio of kittens from A Little R & R Animal Sanctuary Inc. Bingo, Fortnight, and So Long came to see us this week to get neutered (they are sedated in these pictures). They were the sweetest, silliest little boys and we were happy to get them one step closer to finding their forever homes!

We know you have seen her at the hospital and on our social media posts, but we would like to officially introduce Maureen! Maureen is a full time Veterinary Technician at SVS and has been with us since October (yes, this post is long overdue). She has a lengthy background in rescue and emergency medicine. Maureen is a passionate animal advocate with an affinity for tiny, ancient dogs (itā€™s rare she doesnā€™t have a small senior foster dog at home!) We love having her compassionate, welcoming personality on our team and her technical skills have helped us increase our capacity for care. We are so fortunate to have Maureen on our team!

Our Rescue of the Week definitely needed a second chance at a happy life. Trio Animal Foundation took in this elderly gentleman in terrible shape and asked if we could see him pronto. The following morning Chance came in so we could get him cleaned up and checked out. When he walked in we knew our resident senior dog loving technician, Maureen, would be obsessed (despite his odiferous condition). Maureen has a soft spot for the small ancient dogs, and opened her home to foster this poor fellow. Chance has some recovering to do, but we know he is in good hands with both Trio and Maureen. Thank you Trio for giving Chance his secondā€¦. Chance! And we are so lucky to have Maureenā€™s caring heart on our team at SVS!

Vinnyā€™s quality of life improved a lot today! MCP Rescue and Outreach and Vinnyā€™s diligent foster noticed that he was making extremely loud noises while he was breathing. Many people think this excessive noise in brachycephalic (smoosh face) dogs is really cute, or that they just ā€œsnore loudlyā€. This is actually a serious issue with brachycephalic breeds, as it often means they are not getting air into their lungs as easily as they should. This can lead to heat stroke, collapse, and in some bad cases can cause death. Vinny had two procedures done to help him breathe with less effort. The first is a soft palate reduction, during which Dr. VonWaldau took out the extra tissue that was covering the airway. The second is a stenotic nare surgery, in which the surgeon creates larger nostrils for the animal so they can take in more air. Vinny already seems much more comfortable and (we hope) will continue to see improvement as he heals.
