Our Rescue of the Week definitely needed a second chance at a happy life. Trio Animal Foundation took in this elderly gentleman in terrible shape and asked if we could see him pronto. The following morning Chance came in so we could get him cleaned up and checked out. When he walked in we knew our resident senior dog loving technician, Maureen, would be obsessed (despite his odiferous condition). Maureen has a soft spot for the small ancient dogs, and opened her home to foster this poor fellow. Chance has some recovering to do, but we know he is in good hands with both Trio and Maureen. Thank you Trio for giving Chance his second…. Chance! And we are so lucky to have Maureen’s caring heart on our team at SVS!

Vinny’s quality of life improved a lot today! MCP Rescue and Outreach and Vinny’s diligent foster noticed that he was making extremely loud noises while he was breathing. Many people think this excessive noise in brachycephalic (smoosh face) dogs is really cute, or that they just “snore loudly”. This is actually a serious issue with brachycephalic breeds, as it often means they are not getting air into their lungs as easily as they should. This can lead to heat stroke, collapse, and in some bad cases can cause death. Vinny had two procedures done to help him breathe with less effort. The first is a soft palate reduction, during which Dr. VonWaldau took out the extra tissue that was covering the airway. The second is a stenotic nare surgery, in which the surgeon creates larger nostrils for the animal so they can take in more air. Vinny already seems much more comfortable and (we hope) will continue to see improvement as he heals.

Yesterday’s Maine event here at SVS was taking care of these two gentle giants, who both needed entropion surgery. Entropion is a common eyelid condition that occurs when the eyelid folds inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea. Imagine having an eyelash (or 20) in your eye at all times! Ouch! Thor (brown) and Odin (orange) were excellent patients and must be feeling much better already. While under anesthesia, Dr. VonWaldau also removed a fractured canine AND giant ear polyp from Thor. Forever Fortunate Felines, thank you for trusting us with their care!

🎶 Who run the world?….CURLS! 🎶 Little Lambkin came in to see us for some tummy troubles and when we opened her carrier we almost couldn’t believe our eyes… a Devon Rex…kitten… no way! Lambkin is adorable and sweet as can be. She’s in a loving foster home with Cat Care And Rescue Inc and will surely be feeling better soon. She had to be our Rescue of the Week because we were literally ✨obsessed ✨ with this curly cutie.

Puppy fever hit us HARD when Koko arrived for her vaccine appointment! From her wrinkly brow to her cute little paws, this girl is perfection. Our voices were up 8 octaves the entire time, and we all squealed when we saw her. As you can see, Maureen and Dr. Kompare did a very thorough Exam (cuddles and kisses are an absolutely crucial step in that process). Koko went back to her foster home, but we can’t stop thinking about her so naturally she had to be our Alive Rescue

Teddy arranged for a gender reveal party AND a make-over party yesterday all by himself! 💅🏻 👚👕 Teddy was so severely matted that he was believed to be a girl until yesterday morning when he lifted his leg to p*e right before coming in for his “spay”! He received a much needed shave down and neuter, and is as handsome as could be. Elizabeth was able to get most of it off in one giant matt! Thank you Community Animal Rescue Effort - CARE for taking him in and immediately making sure he was comfortable 💕

It’s Friday… who needs a drink? We prefer ours purred, not shaken. 🍸🍹Mojito, Mai Tai, Mimosa, Martini, Gin, and Tonic came in for their spay and neuter surgeries this week. We love kittens, but we love making sure they can’t contribute to over population more! These spirited kittens will be looking for forever homes with Touched By An Animal / Cats-Are-Purrsons, Too

Rumi-nating on whether or not you’d like to adopt a cat? We are here to tell you that this one is a perfect little gentleman and is so adorable that you will want to snuggle and kiss him even though he has a wound on the side of his head (we might be speaking from experience). Rumi came to us with Whiskers & Tails Rescue Foundation, who let us sedate him and clean/close the wound. Rumi woke up from anesthesia ready for more snuggles and snacks, and we were more than happy to oblige. Look at that face! We love you, Rumi!

Juergen-na need a bigger heart for all the love this boy has to offer. Meet Juergen, who came to us from One Tail at a Time for a cleft palate, lip, AND nose repair. Dr. VonWaldau and Lauren gave him all the pre-op cuddles this morning, and he was an enthusiastic recipient💕. We will miss his toothy grin, but he will be much happier without having food and water entering his nasal cavity when he eats and drinks.

This is the largest nasopharygeal polyp I have pulled out of a cat to date. Poor cat "The Dark Stranger" had been having problems breathing, discharge from his nose and coughing when trying to eat canned food, and had matted fur coat. This polyp was in the back of his mouth behind the nasal passages and hanging down toward his larynx. He should be breathing, eating, grooming, and less snotty in the nose now. Cats In Action helped this guy out by getting him in for his medical care.

Zena might be the easiest cat to give subcutaneous fluids to ever! Also, check the comments for her smolder 🔥. Zena hadn’t been feeling 💯 since she was sprung from Chicago Animal Care and Control by Friends of Chicago Animal Care and Control . Dr. Kompare was able to check her out and gave her some fluids to help her feel better. We just fell in love with her sweet personality and gorgeous face so she had to be our

Mama Nellie is THE HAPPIEST girl in the world, even while she’s being examined or vaccinated. She’s a proper lady and already knows “sit”, and “down”. Nellie even crosses her legs when she lies down, but we didn’t get a photo of that so you will just have to take our word for it and believe that her etiquette classes were successful. Nellie is goofy, bright, and will work for snackies. Community Animal Rescue Effort - CARE saved her and we couldn’t love her any more than we already do.

Get ready to have your day brightened by this absolute ray of sunshine ☀️! Herbie came to us on Monday after his foster noticed he was lethargic and having diarrhea. Forever Fortunate Felines reacted quickly and decided to get an exam and Panleukopenia Test done with us right away, and unfortunately he tested positive. Dr. Kompare hospitalized him immediately to replenish his fluids and begin treatment. We are happy to say that he went back to his amazing foster yesterday and is doing very well!

Working with feral cats is one of our absolute favorite things to do. This is Luna, and some caring people in her neighborhood saw that she had extreme swelling on the side of her face and were able to contact the right people to trap her. We received a call today, and were asked if we could possibly squeeze her in to get checked out, at which point a (sedated) exam revealed that she had extreme dental disease that resulted in a facial abscess. Doctor VonWaldau had to extract all of her teeth, and she will no longer be in pain. We would like to thank Cuddly Do Right Rescue and the wonderful people that trapped and transported Luna for getting this lady the care that she deserved!

This is Spyro! One More Dog Rescue pulled him from CACC with a nasty upper respiratory infection. He didn’t let being sick stop him from having a bunch of fun while he stayed with us. His goofy, fun-loving personality easily made him our Rescue of the Week! Thanks for the laughs, Spyro, we know you’ll find a great home soon!

Today was Leo Gets a Makeover Day 💅🏻 💄here at SVS. This big puppy was rescued by MCP Rescue and Outreach after being held in a parking lot in an old abandoned ambulance with his mom and sister. As you can see, Leo had “cherry eye” (pr*****ed 3rd eyelid) in both eyes, and a large laceration under his front legs. We were able to repair his eyes, close his open laceration, AND neuter him today! We are happy that he gets this new leash on life with MCP, and we know this sweet boy will enjoy his new life in the big world after being kept in such poor conditions (MCP has photos of his former living quarters on their page). Good luck, Leo! Thanks for being our

This is Opossum! He’s a cat, not an Opossum. 😻 He did ‘play opossum’ during his exam, but he’s fine, we promise!! Opossum came in for a neuter and to get his injured paw fixed up. While he wasn’t a fan of his cone of shame, we told him it’s for the best and just temporary and he seemed to understand we were just trying to help. Now he’s all fixed up and healing in his One Tail at a Time foster home! (video of him being adorable despite his ouchy foot in the comments)

Pollux made the very snowy trek all the way here in the wee hours of the morning, so he insisted on being our for his efforts. Pollux came in a few weeks ago for his neuter, at which point Dr. VonWaldau discovered one of his canine teeth was previously injured and needed extraction. Although Pollux is down one tooth, his spirits are high and he is as sweet and loving as ever. He woke up from anesthesia ready and eager to cuddle! Thank you Heartland Animal Shelter for saving this sweet baby boy!

Jovie and her emotional support bowl are in need of a foster home! Does your apartment have a “no dogs” policy? No problem, because Jovie will insist she is a bunny to your landlord as long as they bring carrots. This sweet white boxer will steal your heart instantly. She’s the silliest, funniest little pup. “Jovie” is aptly named, as you can’t help but feel jovial when you’re around her. J loves kisses, walks, and snacks and is very easy to please. If you’re interested in fostering, reach out to One More Dog Rescue. Thanks for saving this gal so she could be our

Dakota EARNED her title as rescue of the week by playing secretary, holiday designer, and greeter here at SVS. She is an excellent typist (video evidence in comments) and an enthusiastic cuddler (she will do a running jump into your lap even if you are in a rolling chair, and she will smother you with kisses while you both go tumbling to the floor). Dakota was saved by MCP Rescue and Outreach and had a rough start at life, but is more than willing to start her new one with you on a comfy couch or bed. She will play fetch for as long as you let her and is a certified good girl on walks. If you can’t already tell, we all fell a little bit in love with this one.

Meet Terri 💕.

Terri is a quiet 5 year old poodle mix that was saved by Caring Animal Rescue Inc. Her mouth needed a little TLC and she needed to be spayed before she could go to her furever home. Today, Dr. VonWaldau extracted 4 teeth. Her breath is now as bright as her future (though that never stopped her from smiling before)!
