Meet Carmy, our Feline Patient of the Month for September! At one month old, she weighed in at a whopping 1.2 lbs. This little bundle was brought to the workplace of her future furmom, who knew from fostering cats that rescues across the country were at capacity... so she took her home. An emergency vet treated her open neck wound. Just four weeks old at that time, the staff described her as a spitfire! Over the next few weeks, Carmy wiggled her head around while standing or sitting still. This continued after her bandage was removed, so the heavy neck wrap wasn't the cause. While getting kitten care here, Dr Doan confirmed that cerebellar hypoplasia was affecting her movements and coordination. Carmy adapted quickly and is living her best life in her furever home with feline and canine siblings and a very devoted furmom. At her last visit Carmy was 4 lbs and growing. We can't wait to see her again later this month!

Meet Jessie, our Canine Patient of the Month for September! From the outset, her family’s love and dedication put her puppy mill past behind her. With training classes, Jessie developed into the smartest and most well-behaved dog they ever had. She accompanied them on every road trip, loving each new adventure. Then almost a year ago she became very ill and was diagnosed with Blastomycosis, an often-fatal systemic fungal disease. They were afraid they would lose her…and almost did. She pulled through the worst of it but did become permanently blind. Her family vowed to treat her as normally as possible while keeping her engaged and happy. Her recovery has been slow but her adjustment to her blindness has been remarkable. She still loves gathering info on her walks and has even perfected her recall training using their voices to guide her to them. On a recent trip to Door County, she was in her glory swimming at her favorite beaches and hiking! Jessie has taught her family not to fret about the things they can no longer do but to celebrate the things they can do. It’s been a pleasure to witness their bond for the last 7 years. Here's to you, Jessie!

Meet Bowie, our Feline Patient of the Month for August! His future family started fostering him in early 2016. From the outset, they knew he was a purrfect fit. In a very short time they loved him so much, they couldn't give him up. Foster fail? Foster win! With their patience and encouragement, Bowie slowly came out of his shell. He learned about toys and loved playtime. Even windows were new to him. His full name is Bowie Stardust because he meows so much at times it sounds like he’s singing! For nearly 8 years his sweetness has won over our staff time and again. During treatments, he'll shimmy up to the shoulder of a technician, pressing in for a supportive hug! He ends each visit the same way. His furmom shares, "He is a wonderful boy, and we love him so very much."

Meet Leo, our Canine Patient of the Month for August! Weighing just 10 lbs at his first puppy visit in 2015, we marveled at his huge paws and broad frame. Puppies grow so fast. Leo's dad couldn't agree more! Over the next few months this fella reached a healthy 40 lbs with no signs of stopping. Before we knew it, this Pomsky puppy grew into a perfect 100 pound Husky/Malamute adult! Please swipe to see how this pawsome pup became the supersized sweetheart he is today. What's the secret to his immaculate coat? Leo avoids stepping in puddles. It's hard to believe he's already grrr-8 going on 9! We're looking forward to the years ahead.

Who's our Feline Patient of the Month for July? By George, I think we've got it! Allow us to introduce you to...George! After seeing him as a stray in their neighborhood, his future family was surprised to find him one day sleeping on their back porch. As they approached him, he rolled over for a belly rub--it was love at first sight for everyone. At that moment this kitten traded his street life for majestic cathood (like George of the Jungle becoming Prince George). He's named after a king, a president and the old man they bought their house from right after getting him.

We met George at his first visit here in 2015. Over the years we've been charmed by his confidence, poise & expressive eyes. Please swipe to learn more about him. He's the cat's pajamas, and he's aging purrfectly!

Are you ready to hear a-Bao our Canine Patient of the Month for July? Meet Bao Bao! Her Gotcha Day is on the 12th, and we can't think of a better way to celebrate.
Her name in Chinese means precious treasure, and she has brought infinite joy, love, and happiness to her mom and so many others since day one.

Her best friend is their cat, George. He tolerated months of Bao Bao nipping at his tail as a puppy. Now he plays, chases, and wrestles with her on a daily basis. When he's misbehaving, she'll find mom with a look on her face that lets her know he's being naughty. Mom exclaims, "George!" Then Bao Bao chases him away from the crime scene.

Last year there was an open casting call for small dogs for "The Cherry Orchard" at the Goodman Theatre. She had never considered being a "stage mom" but thought it would be a fun experience even if they didn't get the part. Come audition time, no less than ten beautiful dogs and their owners filled the waiting area all neatly groomed & poised, ready for the spotlight. The full panel of judges included the director, producers & actors. Bao Bao nailed every single trick flawlessly. That afternoon she was cast, and the rest is history. Bao-wow!

We've been caring for this tzuperstar since 2021. We're not just her vet, we're her pupperazzi! Please follow her on Instagram at .theshihtzu.

Meet Cami, our Feline Patient of the Month for June! We've all heard stories where pets pick their people. In 2011, she chose hers. Her furmom remembers her daughter hearing a meow while outside late one night. They opened the front door and she walked right in, bringing lots of love and sweetness. Having just returned from Easter Island, they decided to name her Cami, a Rapa Nui word meaning to bring happiness or affection, which is exactly what she's done since walking into their home and their lives. She even greets visitors like they're her long-lost best friends. Her name fits her purrfectly.

Cami is so bonded to her furmom that she checks under the covers (vs under the bed) for monsters every night. Only when she's sure that all is safe, does she then settle in on top of the covers by her side for cuddling until they fall asleep.

Her furmom shares: "Thanks to Dr Cherrick and the wonderful staff at NAAH, we have been lucky to have her in our lives for so long." We feel equally lucky to have Cami and the trust of her family in our lives, too.

Great Scott! Do you know who our Canine Patient of the Month is for June? That's right, he's Scott! We first met this distinguished gent in 2021, but at age 14 he's been at his mama's side through it all--a career in Texas, a fresh start in Chicago, meeting her husband, the pandemic, and a even a first home. With more free time after grad school, she headed to the shelter where it was love at first sight.
Following a lifetime of shared milestones, he's now a sweet old guy who stares at walls a little too long, drinks water like a delicate flower, and loves to face the wind and sniff for hours on sunny days. Paws-down he's everything you could want in a first dog...and in a senior patient!

Have you ever met a cat who likes lamb chops? Meet Ramses, our Feline Patient of the Month for May! Nearly 20 years ago, he joined his family as an 8-week-old kitten.  They were drawn to Abyssinians as they resemble the cats shown in ancient Egyptian art. Hence, he was named after a great pharaoh. True to their breed research, Ramses proved to be an active, intelligent, loyal & entertaining kitten. He loved jumping onto kitchen counters and cabinets, and even learned how to slide a screen door open with his claw! As he’s aged, he’s become calmer and more affectionate. At 19 ½ years old, he has his own heating pads throughout the home for naps and bedtime. And he continues to be an avid sun worshipper by day. It warms our hearts to know patients throughout their entire lives. We’re proud to share in Ramses’ golden years. Please swipe for a glimpse of a life fit for a king!

After raining cats & kittens in March and April, we had a total of 361 entrants in our raffle. Congratulations to Lucky Cat Henri! He's a Balinese with hypnotic blue eyes who's just a few months shy of turning Sweet 16. We've been providing his vet care since he was 2 months old! He's a testament to the importance of feline wellness at any age. His sister, Gracie, already called dibs on the treats in his gift bag. winner

Meet our May Patient of the Month, Mattie! Her first visit here was just 2 days after joining her family. They remember her as a tiny 7-week-old fluffball who immediately stole their hearts. As you can see with her puppy photo, it was love at first sight for us, too. Her dad shares that her favorite activity around the house, besides being a sleepy loaf, is to pick up a cat toy or baby toy that she knows she’s not supposed to have, then pace back and forth with tail wagging until she's noticed, causing her to dart away like the little rascal she is. Mattie is the middle child of the family, with two younger human sisters who adore her and two older kitty brothers who...tolerate her...mostly. It's been our staff's pleasure to watch Mattie & her family grow!

04/23/2024

Yes, Baby Kurt, that's the forecast for the rest of April. Did you know he's sweet sixteen? Now's the purrfect time to spotlight senior felines, kitties age 7 & over. Why do we recommend wellness visits twice a year for seniors? Age- related issues can develop without noticeable signs. Monitoring appearance, blood pressure & lab values helps us detect medical changes sooner. These visits also give you the chance to discuss any changes you may be seeing with appetite, mobility, cognition, etc. Seemingly old-age behavior (like playing less, sleeping more or changes in litter box habits) can mimic medical symptoms. Arthritis, dental disease, hypertension & hyperthyroidism are just a few examples. With the help of your veterinarian many changes & illnesses can be managed, giving senior cats a good quality of life for years to come.

Fun Fact: Today's pic was taken while playing at his furever home with technician Magali.

We're still decorating our windows for each feline visit in March & April. Each rain drop is 1 name drop into our Lucky Cat Raffle. Check back for a sneak-peek at the pawsome prize!

Meet Thorn, our Feline Patient of the Month for April! His first visit with us followed his adoption at 12 weeks of age. His pawrents usually find their pets through rescues. When they saw him climbing the cage bars at PetSmart, they just had to liberate him, knowing he'd be a good fit with their other pets. Soon he was zooming through his furever home with cat and dog siblings & bonding with his 2 favorite people in the world. Thorn demands petting & will dramatically flop over on the kitchen floor to receive it. He loves to stretch against the back of his pawrents' legs before jumping up on their shoulders. He's equally engaging at the clinic. It's been our pleasure to help Thorn start off on the right paw over the last 2 1/2 years. Swipe to learn more about this adventurous kitty & his family!
