The Winnemac Dog Park Committee received word earlier this evening that the Chicago Park District has decided not to allow a dog park at Winnemac Park. As disappointed as we are, we are grateful for the support of the community. It is apparent that an off-leash, dog-friendly, safe space is much needed within our community. As a committee, we recognize that, so we are regrouping to determine next steps in finding a way to meet this need.

As a group who has been fighting more than two years for a legal spot to let our canine companions do their thing, these headlines really hit us where it hurts. Needless violence against dogs. Our hearts go out to Jacqui Michaels, owner of the two dogs, named Barry and Oakie JAGS.

"This park needs and deserves a space for dogs to run! The space could be so much better utilized to serve the community. For example, there are currently 4 baseball diamonds that get use in summer months from morning to early afternoon and are otherwise completely vacant. By comparison, a dog park would be used 365 days a year from 6am to 9pm! There are dogs in the park all day and night whether there is a designated space for them or not, and creating a space specifically for dogs will increase the value of the park to the community. I noticed much of the park is also in restoration, and having a designated space for dogs would further protect the beautiful habitats that need restored."

We have an update. We have until the end of October to submit petition signatures (link in bio). The opposition is coming in strong, so we need help spreading the word to be sure all our voices are heard. The park district will place priority on those that live within a mile of Winnemac Park.
