Miss Bee had a fractured molar that we found at our annual float. She has been enjoying the grass and put on some pounds but acted as if nothing was bothering her. Even if your horse is fat and happy what’s really going on in their mouth?

Spilling the beans has a whole new meaning now 😳
Yes this is all from one horse!
“Hanging” with my clients! 🤣
This is one of two methods that I use to support a sedated horse’s head. It has a quick release feature that in case of an emergency the horse can be separated from the mechanism without having to worry about injury.
A safe and comfortable environment for the horse and myself makes for a great experience.

Holy beans! This came out of an Arabian gelding.
After a dental is often a great time to clean your gelding’s sheath as they are coming off their sedation.
He’s feeling much more comfortable in his mouth and his sheath!
All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth 🎶🎄
Wolf teeth, cap fragments and first of the baby teeth out!
I’d like to introduce myself to my new followers.
👋🏼 I’m Alex!
Horses have been a part of my life since I was old enough to ride. My parents got me lessons at a lesson barn in Loudoun county and the passion for horses has only grown since then. I’m just like many other horse owners now enjoying every chance I can to get out in the woods camping and exploring the beautiful countryside that I call home with my horses.
My family was blue-collar, in the construction industry so following in their footsteps into engineering was a simple choice. With some help from my parents, a lot of long days, and hard work I paid my way through engineering school and began my career. Currently, I am a full-time engineer and have been for about 10 years. With the passing of my mother almost 2 years ago, I decided to make a change in my career and go do something that I enjoyed with horses instead of sitting behind a desk every day punching numbers.
So, I decided to go back to school for Equine Dentistry and started Roaming Herd. For the last 2 years, I have been enjoying this passion on the weekends with the intention of going full-time.
It’s been an absolute blast to see so many horses and people as my time in the industry continues. We hope to see faces, new and familiar, and fuzzy ears in the months to come!
You may see me arrive for appointments with my sidekick Boone, please give him all the loving you can because he’s hard at work keeping a smile on my face.
If your horse, donkey, mini, or mule has not been seen by an equine dental technician this year to have their teeth worked on, they are due!!

With thanksgiving around the corner, my boys and I are feeling extra thankful for the new and old clients that choose to support our small business. 🐴🦷
Thankful for good health, thankful for happy horses and thankful for great clients! 💛
Gotta love seeing the rest of the barn yard crew.
My favorite season is here 🍂🎃
With the seasons changing, there is an increase in use of hay to fuel our horse’s nutritional needs. Be sure that your horses have ample grinding surface and can properly chew for the upcoming cold winter times.
Spooky season should not include skeleton horses, get their teeth checked! 👻

After a year of practicing, I was able to make my way out to the lovely Crossties Ancient Oaks Farm, who were one of my first clients. There were 9 horses and minis collectively done with a well scheduled day by the owners. Everything was set up beautifully, sedation was ready and by the end of the day it was a smoothly ran operation. To top it off they provided their favorite dentist with good company and a full belly. One of the best things about my job is that I get to work with different equine companions, but the second best is being able to work with great clients. Having help to hold horses or to administer sedation, they make the whole process of dentals a dream.

Ms. Winkey was the sweetest mini donkey today. She had a pronounced incisor hook that restricted her jaw movement. There are lots of good grazing days ahead for her!
Have us come out to check your horses for any issues and their yearly float.

First expired molar for 2023! 🦷
This was out of a 25+ year old horse that had been dropping feed and lost a significant amount of weight.
As a horse reaches its geriatric years, their teeth lose the reserve crown. They are referred to as expired teeth and are caused by normal wear and tear from a lifetime of chewing.
Perfect gift for your horse friends this Christmas is a dental for their horse/horses. Send me a message or contact 571-733-0431 to give them a certificate for one.

Coming home from the 10th annual EDPA conference here in TX. Networked with many other equine dentists, learned new techniques and observed some interesting case studies.
Eager to come home and continue practicing with some new insight. 🤓🦷
It's starting to feel like fall 🍂
Has your equine partner had their annual dental float? Floats help keep your horse healthy with a balanced mouth free from sharp edges and abnormalities. Pictured below are hooks on the upper 6 premolars.

I’ve recently come across a few unsettling circumstances where the horse community wasn’t what it needed to be. An extremely willing and concerned family recently met me at the one of the local fairs and asked for me to come out to see their horse as a last ditch effort before euthanizing. This horse has been seen by vets and other said professionals but nothing was mentioned as to what could be the issue.
Hearing about their horror stories of the farrier and even a vet that wouldn’t even come to their property but would provide medication for a horse they haven’t even seen for a very sensitive part of a horse. It should be every horse owner’s responsibility to welcome questions and provide better options for people that may not have the connnections you do. The whole stigma of ‘my s**t don’t stink’ and ‘I’m better than you’ mentality is absolutely disgusting and quite frankly immature. Majority of the horse community wants what’s best for their horse.
Whether we own a horse and/or work in the horse industry we all have the same thing in common- love for horses. Be a better person and help your clients/friends find better care if you see something that is alarming. I know I don’t know everything about horses but I strive to learn more on a daily basis.
Knowledge is everything and shouldn’t be withheld from the ones who are willing to listen.
Rant over.
