They come running whenever they hear us refilling water buckets.
Tag! You’re it! Brothers Chaco and Mochaccino burning off some steam in the afternoon drizzle. Then they stopped and stared at each other. All grazing now.
I’m often asked what “herd alert” sounds like. Here’s a brief sampling by Gitana, with the white face. Not sure what she saw ~ I didn’t spot anything, and none of the others alerted. But then Gitana is kind of a drama queen. Might have been a cat or a squirrel.
Our farm visitors sometimes include journalism students on an assignment, and this brief video is a recent one. About halfway through it you'll hear the girls alerting at the "scary" cows in the neighbor's pasture. As prey animals, alpacas are very wary of new things in their surroundings and signal "beware" to each other.
Our annual fleece harvest. Thank you, Steven Patrick Bell.
Juliaca (light fawn) alerting us about the cows. Folks often ask what the alert sounds like...
Terese likes to climb the two short steps at the side of the deck so she can munch the fallen leaves and survey the farm.
Mana hoovering up leaves.
Wrestling rascals, Trinket and Mochaccino.
Three days old, keeping up with mom nicely. He doesn’t really like the gravel.
This is pronking. Boing-boing-boing. For whatever reason, the girls decided to dance and race around the pasture rather than come in. Such playful fun.
Four-day-old Mana mingling with the herd as they graze. Mom Tinkerbell is the last one she walks past. (apologies for weed-whacking background noise!)
Just before noon today, Tinkerbell’s cria arrives! New life on the farm is a particular joy when the mom is a pro, the baby is healthy, and nursing goes well. Welcome to our world, Mana! And congratulations to her owner, Kim Sheehan 👏
The boys are doing great together! Out to the big field they go!
Roll call: Tondero, Kalahari, Troubadour, Sorrento, Bubinga, and Stryder. Calypso n Tripoli we’re out the gate nanoseconds before I got the camera on.
The boys are bored and its not raining, so why not wrestle? Navarre (black) is an 11yr old gelding. Calypso (white suri, 2.5 yrs) and Tripoli (gray, 1.5 yrs) are usually the boisterous ones. Gryffin and Atom are content to stand by.
More dust baths, because tomorrow it’s gonna rain.
Dust bath!
Navarre and Gryffin pause for a roll in the dirt before frolicking to the field.
At this time of year, the alpacas recognize Kim as The Apple Lady.
Running for the plums! — a morning event.
