Vets are trained to give you treatment options, even with a terminally ill pet. But sometimes the owner knows it's time to let their pet go. Here's what to say.

Please share if you believe your pet has a soul.
I believe! From The Rainbow Bridge

"I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly, as you brushed away a tear.

โ€œItโ€™s me, I havenโ€™t left you, Iโ€™m well, Iโ€™m fine, Iโ€™m hereโ€

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea. You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore. I want to take your parcels, I wished I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care. I want to reassure you that Iโ€™m not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for the key, I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said โ€œItโ€™s meโ€œ.

You looked so very tired and then you sank into a chair, I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.

Itโ€™s possible for me to be so near you everyday, To say to you with certainty โ€œI never went awayโ€œ.

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew, That in the stillness of that evening I was very close to you.

The day is overโ€ฆ. I smile and watch you yawning and say, โ€œGood Night, Sweet Dreams, God Bless, Iโ€™ll see you in the morningโ€.

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide, Iโ€™ll rush to greet you and weโ€™ll stand together side by side.

I have so many things to show you, thereโ€™s much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out; then come home and be with me."

-This poem was written by Phyllis Smith and is available along with 75 more poems in a book called โ€œOur Best Friends."

When someone you love is mourning the loss of a dog or cat, it doesn't help to say things like 'when are you getting another pet?' or 'you need to move on.'
