Where it Started

My name is James Whitehurst owner of Whitehurst Waterfowl Taxidermy and I have been doing waterfowl taxidermy since I was 13 years old. My uncle Judson Whitehurst originally had the taxidermy business Whitehurst Waterfowl located in Pactolus, NC which he started in the mid 1980’s. I sparked a interest in taxidermy when I was around 11 or 12 and started helping out in my uncles shop after school and on the weekends. I learned pretty quick from just watching him and having so much hands on training. It was not long before my uncle had me doing most of birds coming into the shop. In 1998/99 my uncle had moved on to a new business venture and turned the taxidermy business over to me. I was only 15 when I took over the shop and had many good customers for many years. With me being in high school I played a lot of sports and had a hard time finding the time I needed to work in my shop. When I started college in the fall of 2002 I decided to stop doing taxidermy professionally due to a loss of interest in taxidermy and finding the time needed to do it. I was still doing birds for myself, family, and friends. In 2012 with my life being much more settled I decided this was something I wanted to pursue again and have had success with it to this day. I want to thank all my customers new and old for supporting my business over the years.
