We are so grateful that we were able to help Zelda today! She swallowed the tip of a medication syringe yesterday morning. Repeated attempts to remove it using an endoscope yesterday were not successful. But today, sedation and grasping forceps did the trick to remove the plastic object from her stomach. We are so happy, and hope that Zelda returns to her normal diet of bugs soon!

We now have the Medgene Labs rabbit RHDV2 vaccine in stock. It is a 2-shot series, 21 days apart. The vaccine is considered to be fully protective 14 days after the second dose.

Since the RHDV2 virus has not yet been confirmed in North Carolina, and since the vaccine only has emergency authorization and is not yet fully approved by the USDA, we are not yet making the recommendation to vaccinate all rabbits. But for clients that understand the risks and limitations and still really want to get their rabbits vaccinated, we now have the vaccine available.

A full examination will be done at the first visit and a brief examination will be done at the second visit. Fees include these two exam fees plus the cost of the two doses of vaccine. Clients will be asked to sign a consent form and waiver since the vaccine is not yet fully approved.

Avian Influenza alert! Everyone living or working with birds, particularly small poultry flocks, should be aware that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in the Carolinas this month.

If you have a small poultry flock, please visit the USDA APHIS website about its Defend the Flock Program, found here - https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/avian/defend-the-flock-program/defend-the-flock-program.

All pet bird owners should keep their birds indoors, when possible, and monitor for signs of illness, such as ruffled feathers, lethargy, sneezing, and coughing, and contact their avian veterinarian as soon as possible if signs are seen.
