If you’ve taken classes with us, you’ve likely seen ex-pens in use. We love them for creating a bit of a visual barrier between working dogs, which helps them be a little less stimulated by their environment and a little more attentive to their handler. Read this excellent article by Kate Knows Dogs for some more uses for ex-pens!

We are super excited to announce our first ever AKC S.T.A.R. (Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsibility) Puppy class is now open for enrollment!

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program is designed for dog owners and their puppies, giving them a beginning foundation for a lifelong relationship.

All puppies up to one year old are welcome to participate in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program including purebreds and mixed breeds. We will teach you how to best communicate with your puppy effectively and consistently. Your puppy is given the opportunity to socialize with other puppies and other novel stimuli in a safe environment. The class also includes information on common puppy-raising questions such as housetraining, chewing, and the most effective way to teach skills such as coming when called, sit, down, and leave it. The instructor for our AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is a certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluator through the American Kennel Club.

You and your puppy will attend six weeks of basic training class and on the sixth week, your instructor will administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test. Upon passing the test, you’ll get an application to send to AKC® for enrollment in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. We know it’s summer and schedules are tight, so we will hold one bonus 7th week class for puppies who need to miss a week so you can still be eligible to test. Don’t want the certificate? No problem! Enroll in class to receive all of this wonderful instruction and then opt out of the test.

Class begins Sunday, August 4th at 10:00 a.m. at Dog Dog Daycare in Madison. Click here to register! ➡️ https://www.busydogtraining.com/in-person-classes/puppy/

How is everyone feeling about the fireworks this week?

I’m pretty lucky because my dogs are largely unbothered by fireworks. With that said, I know that by Sunday night, *I’ll* be getting frazzled by the fireworks going off in the neighborhood, and so I imagine my dogs will be as well. On that note, I’m taking some steps to try to set them up for success as best I can.

Here’s my plan:

- I’m making up a bunch of frozen dinners/licki mats/ Kongs/toppls. We know that licking can be regulatory for dogs, so I want to give them something to occupy their time and soothe any nerves at the same time.

- I have some CBD treats from both bad dog frida and Nutzy Mutz & Crazy Catz ready for a little extra anti-anxiety boost as needed!

- I’ll likely close my windows up and run fans or maybe the air conditioning plus some fun music as needed. By the end of the week, the dogs will probably have the soundtrack to Hamilton memorized!

- We’re playing lots of indoor nose games with all of my dogs this week. Using their noses to find hidden treats is such a fun way for them to spend their time, keeps their concentration off the fireworks, and is also a great way for my elementary-aged son to interact with them. It’s a win-win!

Like I said, I’m incredibly lucky that my dogs are fairly steady during fireworks, and I know that not everyone is in the same situation. What are YOU doing to help your dog stay calm? Let us know in the comments! Busy Dog trainers, I’m especially interested in hearing from you!

Fireworks and storms becoming a stressor for both you and your pets??

It's not too late to call and talk about anti-anxiety medication for your pet! You both will thank us later!!

We will be closed on Thursday July 4th in observance of the holiday, so call us today!

We’ve got spaces available in our Intro to Parkour class beginning this Sunday at Dog Dog Daycare in Madison!

If you’re familiar with Busy Dog on any level, you know that we’re hugely passionate about dog parkour! Have you ever wondered why or what it’s all about?

Dog parkour is often referred to as “urban agility.” The sport is composed of a number of skills that can be trained anywhere without any equipment. There are 6 base behaviors (and many others beyond!): 4 feet on, 2 feet on, under, through, in, and balance. These skills are then turned to your natural or urban environment where you and your dog are challenged to find a variety of obstacles of different sizes, textures, and stability, to play parkour on!

There are myriad benefits to teaching your dog parkour - Read the blog post linked below to learn about some of our favorites!

We have a few spaces left in our Intro to Nosework class beginning tonight!

Why Canine Nosework is Awesome

Mental Stimulation: Dogs, like humans, need mental exercise to stay sharp. Our Intro to Nosework class provides a challenging mental workout, requiring dogs to use their noses to solve problems and find hidden treasures. This mental stimulation can help prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.

Physical Exercise: While it might not seem as physically demanding as some of our other offerings like agility or parkour, nosework is an excellent low-impact activity that keeps your dog moving and exploring.

Enhanced Bonding: Engaging in nosework together strengthens the bond between dogs and their human companions.

Boosted Confidence: Successfully finding hidden reinforcers boosts a dog's confidence. We can use this confidence boost to help our dogs normalize novel experiences and environments.

Reduction of Anxiety: The focused nature of nosework can help anxious or nervous dogs by redirecting their attention to the task at hand. The calming effect of scent exploration can be particularly beneficial for dogs prone to stress.

This is one of my favorite classes, and I would strongly recommend *everyone* take a nosework class with your dog at some point. The joy that this class cultivates is palpable, and it’s truly just so much fun. For more information or to register for class hit this link: https://www.busydogtraining.com/scent-work/

Let them sniff!(Even better? Sign them up for one of our nosework classes!)

Let them sniff!

(Even better? Sign them up for one of our nosework classes!)

Here’s a PSA on behalf of all dogs.

Stop correcting your dog for sniffing.

Stop it. Please.

How would you like it if I corrected you for looking around a room? Imagine if you raised your head to look around a new place and I popped you or shoved you or said “HEY! PAY ATTENTION” You’d get pretty upset pretty quickly I’d imagine.

Dogs don’t smell because they are ignoring you or being stubborn. We humans primarily depend on sight, but dogs use smell AND sight to assess their surroundings and communicate. People spend more time interpreting visual data than olfactory information. Dogs are just the opposite.

Dogs devote lots of brain power to interpreting smells. They have more than 100 million sensory receptor sites in the nasal cavity as compared to 6 million in people, and the area of the canine brain devoted to analyzing odors is about 40 times larger than the comparable part of the human brain. In fact, it’s been estimated that dogs can smell anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 times better than people.

Scent gives information. Smelling is normal. Smelling is necessary and natural. Smelling is relaxing. Air scenting is HUGE for recovering reactive dogs. LET YOUR DOG SMELL!

Correcting a dog for sniffing is one of the worst things I watch people do. It’s another example of how controlling we try to be in our dogs lives. If you don’t want your dog to smell, teach him to focus on you instead for part of the time, and then give other ample times to smell. If he’s pulling you to smell, use a different tool that inhibits pulling but still allows for some nasal exploration. Even better work on collar pressure work too so your dog learns to smell when there’s less pressure! Walks on a long line on a dirt road or in a field for your dog to zig zag back and forth on to smell is MUCH healthier and more tiring for them as animals than trying to keep them within 6 feet of you on a neighborhood walk.

Please accept that smelling is normal and work WITH your dog on it, rather than just trying to suppress it. Just because that blade of grass or tree isn’t interesting to YOU doesn’t mean your dog deserves a correction. Who cares if you don’t walk the extra block - spend those 5 minutes on that one tree if you need to. Your dog doesn’t complain when you watch YouTube videos of kittens for hours or read the news or binge on Netflix, so let him get his scent binge in to.

Happy smelling pups!

At Busy Dog, Social and Confident Puppy works a LOT on socialization. We go beyond puppy play groups (we do that, too!) and socialize puppies to surfaces, grooming tools, profiles, things that move, sounds, and more! We go at puppy's pace, making sure she feels safe and confident throughout. Puppies need us to listen to grow to trust us.

Social and Confident Puppy is for baby puppies from 8 to 16 weeks old. If you have a timid, scared, shy puppy a little older than this, reach out to us to discuss whether this class is appropriate for your puppy.
