Colts started ~ Problem horses ~ Tune ups

Rich believes that some horses need a tune up by a skilled professional to keep them going well, but not all horses need a long term training program. Some horses just need an occasional day, week, or month to keep them well trained for their owner. Others may need a longer training period. AWARDS & COMMUNITY RECOGNITION

Rich Bradshaw received the OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD from Fieldstone Riding For The Handicapped Center. They stated that "Rich is a long time supporter and fellow horse professional. He is admired by many for his love of horses, teaching and training his students." Congratulations, Rich! A LITTLE ABOUT RICH...

Everybody likes to talk about their horses. Rich is no different. He would like to tell you about some of the horses that he has owned over the years. Rich's second horse was "Frosty," a paint mare. He had sold his first horse who was a gelding so that he could buy a mare to raise a foal. It was a difficult decision for the young horseman, but Rich really wanted to raise a foal. Frosty, unlike Rich's first horse, was a very sweet mare. She was used as a trail horse before Rich bought her, and was very quiet and easy to ride. He bred her to one of Doctor McCollister's studs. Doc McCollister was a local veterinarian, and Rich worked an entire summer for him to pay for the stud fee for the breeding. Unfortunately, the breeding did not catch and Frosty was not in foal. Heartbroken, Rich decided to breed her again the next year. Will she have a foal next year? Rich was so disappointed that she did not catch the first time and was very worried about whether or not she would have a foal the second time. He enjoyed riding Frosty. She was so well trained and easy to ride, unlike his first horse. When the time came for her to foal, Rich eagerly checked her stall every morning. Only Frosty was in the stall with her big belly, but no foal was to be seen. He and his Dad watched and waited for a year, but no foal appeared. Heartbroken, Rich gave up. Early one morning, Rich's Dad asked him if he had checked for a foal. "No," Rich said. "Why bother?" His Dad said, "Why don't you check, just in case?" Rich went down to the barn and looked into Frosty's stall. Standing beside the sweet mare was the prettiest little paint foal that he ever saw! Once again, Rich was in tears. But these were tears of joy! ...to be continued

In 1954, sixty-three-year-old Maine farmer Annie Wilkins embarked on an impossible journey. She had no money and no family, she had just lost her farm, and her doctor had given her only two years to live.

But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow. Annie had little idea what to expect beyond her rural crossroads; she didn’t even have a map. But she did have her ex-racehorse, her faithful mutt, and her own unfailing belief that Americans would treat a stranger with kindness.

Annie, Tarzan, and her dog, Depeche Toi, rode straight into a world transformed by the rapid construction of modern highways. Between 1954 and 1956, the three travelers pushed through blizzards, forded rivers, climbed mountains, and clung to the narrow shoulder as cars whipped by them at terrifying speeds. Annie rode more than four thousand miles, through America’s big cities and small towns. Along the way, she met ordinary people and celebrities—from Andrew Wyeth (who sketched Tarzan) to Art Linkletter and Groucho Marx. She received many offers—a permanent home at a riding stable in New Jersey, a job at a gas station in rural Kentucky, even a marriage proposal from a Wyoming rancher.

In a decade when car ownership nearly tripled, when television’s influence was expanding fast, when homeowners began locking their doors, Annie and her four-footed companions inspired an outpouring of neighborliness in a rapidly changing world.

Horses pulled passengers about one and a half miles uphill, and then the fun began. For the much faster trip downhill, the horse boarded the car via a wooden ramp, and rode back along with the passengers. c.1900.

In this historic photograph, the renowned sharpshooter Annie Oakley is captured riding side saddle on a horse that is rearing up, all while wearing a skirt. The photo was taken in front of a tent belonging to Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. From a young age, Oakley showcased her shooting skills at circuses and various shows, eventually earning herself the status of a global superstar due to her extraordinary talent. Among her many remarkable achievements.

One of Oakley's most famous feats involved splitting a playing card, with its edge facing her, and puncturing it with holes before it even touched the ground from a distance of 90 feet. She accomplished this using a .22-caliber rifle. Oakley also amazed audiences by shooting a target positioned behind her back, all while relying on a mirror to aim, as well as shooting ci******es from her husband's lips.

Richard Gere - Gere bought his Appy, Drukpa, sight unseen after a friend’s recommendation just before filming Sommersby. The 8-year-old gelding had previously been used as a turnback horse at the rodeos held in Saratoga, New York. Drukpa was Gere’s first horse.

“I brought him down to Virginia where we were shooting. The production had built a Civil War-era town in the middle of a national forest, complete with fields and a stable. So, I just left Drukpa in the paddock there. When I had a 10-minute break, I just saddled him up and took off! It was a perfect situation.”

Drukpa and Richard became lifelong pals after that trip.

“This big Appy follows me around like a dog,” he said during an interview. “First horses are like your first girlfriend. You never forget.”

Congratulations to Greg Eastwood who took 1st place out of 20 horses in a tough Obstacle Challenge at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala, including difficult obstacles such as a log submerged under water that you had to side pass over. Greg has been a long time customer and participant in the obstacle challenges we host here and has a special bond with his horse. Rich always enjoys hearing about the fun people have with their horses and it is extra special when it’s someone he had the opportunity of playing a role in their journey!

Spring Update!

Rich is as busy as ever since moving his business to his home on Newcomb Road in Middlefield. The new arena is up, riding has been ongoing throughout the winter and he is preparing for the warmer weather which is just around the corner.

Rich will have obstacle practices and competition in April and May. This is a great way to get out, start riding and prepare your horse for obstacles and spooky things on the trail. He will also have cow sorting this summer and is anticipating that the cows will arrive in April.

Rich is still giving lessons and if you are not ready to get your horse out just yet, schedule to ride one of his. This is a great way to get yourself in shape and prepare yourself prior to getting back on your horse.

Group lessons are also available so if there is something that you and your friends have been wanting to work on or you would like to participate in but would like to practice first, give Rich a call. This could be ranch riding, cow work, obstacle practice or just bettering your horsemanship.

Whatever your needs are, give Rich a call and talk to him about what you have going on. Chances are he will come up with something that you will find helpful.
