Fireworks are scary for pets!! 🎆🎇Here’s a plan to help keep your pup safe and stress-free.

Tips to diminish your pet’s Fireworks frenzy...

1. Get plenty of exercise with your pet during the day to decrease any pent-up nerves/energy when the fireworks start.
2. Provide a safe space for your pet in a familiar and comfortable room inside. Play some Anti Anxiety Music for Dogs calming music, white noise, or the TV to help drown out the fireworks. Ensure all doors and windows are closed.
3. Distract with high-value treats and toys ➡️ try a Kong with frozen peanut butter to keep them busy and happy.
4. Consider an anti-anxiety wrap like the Thundershirt Calming Wrap to provide gentle pressure that helps decrease anxiety and stress for some pets.
Make sure your pet has proper identification - Check your pet’s identification tag for up-to-date contact information. Tip: If you don’t have time to order a tag with accurate information, you can always use a luggage tag to add your information and attach it to the collar.
5. Microchip your pet to help your local officials get your fur-baby back to you in the chance they do fearfully flee... Although microchips are not tracking devices, they do help lost pets be reunited with their parents.
6. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date, and if your pet isn’t microchipped ➡️ Use your app to request a microchip appointment today!
7. Contact us if you’d like to discuss prescription sedatives and other options to help decrease the fireworks trauma for your furry friend.

Your Questions About Pet Insurance Answered 🤔It’s National Insurance Day: Here’s what you need to know about getting coverage for your pet.

Our pets are part of our family, and just like any family member, we want to be able to provide care for them in case of emergencies, accidents or illnesses. Here are the answers to some of the most common pet insurance questions:

Q: Why should I get pet insurance?

A: Just like any other kind of insurance, pet insurance gives you peace of mind. Should anything unexpected happen with your pet’s health, you will feel at ease knowing that your pet is covered. It also allows you to make the best medical decisions for your pet by easing the financial burden that can often make choosing the right treatment difficult.

Q: What is covered through pet insurance?

A: The standard coverage for most pet insurance companies includes diagnostics and treatment for any major medical problem. There is typically a small waiting period when you first sign up, after which any new illnesses will be covered--including hereditary and congenital conditions. Most companies only cover major medical care rather than preventative wellness services, but there are companies that will cover things like vaccines, dental cleanings and prescription food, usually for a higher monthly premium.

Q: How do I use pet insurance?

A: When you take your pet in to the vet, you will pay for the services up front. Then you will submit a claim form to your insurance company. If you have met the annual deductible for your pet, they will reimburse you for any covered expenses according to the plan that you select.

Q: Which company should I sign up with?

A: We recommend using PAWLICY ADVISOR which will help compare multiple insurance quotes and coverages in one place and see which one works best for you and your pet. Go to pawlicy.com/start

🚨 June is National Pet Preparedness Month ⛑Use these tips to create a plan for your pets before disaster strikes.

As we’ve all experienced, disaster can happen out of nowhere and have an impact on not only our lives, but our pets as well. These situations are almost impossible to predict, but you can prepare for the unexpected by staying informed and creating a plan. Here are some tips to make sure you and your furry family are ready:

Include your pets in your emergency plans. Typically, what is best for you in an emergency is also what’s best for your pets. Whether you decide to stay or evacuate, plan for your pet’s needs and safety as well.
Build a separate emergency kit for your pets. You can view Ready.gov’s checklist for items to pack here.
Make sure and keep digital records and/or pictures to identify your pet after a disaster in case you become separated. You can use our hospital app to access your pet’s vaccination records at all times. We also strongly recommend that you microchip your pet and keep their registration information up to date.
Create a list of places that accept pets if an emergency happens. Use websites such as https://www.gopetfriendly.com/ to find pet friendly hotels and other facilities.

For more information, visit https://www.ready.gov/pets,

Feel free to chat thru our app NCAC VET or call us with any questions!

September is Senior Pet Health Month
How do I know when my pet is a senior, and how should I care for them?

On average, pets age seven times faster than people. Typically, dogs and cats are considered senior when they’re about seven years old. Of course, size and breed have a lot of bearing on the aging process, and cats generally live longer than dogs.

Just like us, pets tend to require more TLC as they age, and they are more prone to developing health problems like arthritis, cancer, kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, thyroid conditions, and diabetes. While aging itself is not a disease, according to Vetstreet, there are a few symptoms you should keep an eye on when it comes to caring for your older pet:

Changes in weight (especially weight loss)
Decreased appetite or lack of appetite
Increased water consumption
Changes in urine or stool patterns
New lumps, bumps or swellings — or changes in existing ones
Persistent cough
Difficulty breathing or breathing heavily or rapidly at rest
Sudden collapse or weakness
Difficulty climbing stairs or jumping
Foul mouth odor or drooling
Seizure or convulsions
Disorientation

If you are noticing any of these signs in your senior pet, it might be time for a check up. Request an appointment through our app 📲 NCACVET, or give us a call, so we can perform a nose-to-tail exam and create a plan for their senior care.

How do you know if your pet is in pain?
Here are 6 signs to look for 🐶🐱

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Animals are very good at hiding pain, and they can’t tell us what’s wrong. It’s important to be aware of the most common signs of pain so we can identify and treat any problems early. Here are some changes to look for in your pet:

#1 Slowdown in activity
Not going up or down stairs; difficulty standing after lying down can be signs of osteoarthritis
Less play time—not playing as much as usual can signal pain in joints, neck, or back
Less jumping/a reluctance to jump onto surfaces. This especially applies to cats who, when feeling well, love to explore high places. If they are not doing this, it is likely because of hip or back pain
#2 Decreased eating and drinking. While loss of interest in food or water can signal a much more serious medical issue, it also can be a sign of mouth or abdominal pain
#3 Changes in grooming behavior—increased grooming or licking of an area on the body may indicate pain in that area or referred pain. Decreased grooming, especially in cats, may indicate it is too painful to twist around
#4 Changes in urine or bowel movements could be related to pain and may indicate an inability to maintain the position to eliminate. Cats also may have trouble climbing in and out of the litter box
#5 Increases in respiration may be caused by pain
#6 Changes in routine; different sleeping patterns and not resting in the usual places also may indicate the animal is in pain

If you’re noticing any of these symptoms in your pet, please send us a chat 💬or request an appointment through the app 📲

Pet Disease Alerts
Leptospirosis active cases in Florida

Alert-https://petdiseasealerts.org/alerts-map/ #/leptospirosis/dog/united-states/florida
There have been active positive cases of Leptospirosis reported in Lee County this month. Reports have also been made in Broward, Palm Beach, Hillsborough, Orange, Lake, Seminole, Leon, Duval, Flagler, St. Lucie and Brevard Counties.

Please contact us to discuss Leptospirosis and how you can protect your pet against this disease.

Leptospirosis in dogs is a bacterial infection that spreads through the bloodstream. Dogs can get leptospirosis from puddles or bodies of water that carry urine from infected wildlife. Open sores on the skin can increase the chances of contracting this disease.

If your dog swims in, passes through, or drinks infected water, or if they come into contact with infected soil or mud, they are at risk.

Can Leptospirosis Spread to People and Other Pets?
The Leptospira spirochete bacteria is zoonotic, meaning that it can be transmitted to humans and other animals from an infected animal. Children are most at risk of acquiring the bacteria from an infected pet.

The vaccine VANGUARD LEPTO:
Can be administered as early as 6 weeks of age
5x microfiltration to help reduce extraneous proteins
Help protect against Leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease transmitted in urine and water. Leptospirosis if found across the US and in both urban and rural environments.

Please call us or request an appointment for your pet to be protected against Lepto.

⏰August 15th is National Check the Chip Day!
Be sure your pets will find their way home if they are ever lost.
According to the American Humane Association:

One in three pets will become lost in their lifetime.
Approximately 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the US each year.
Over 94% of lost pets that have a microchip are successfully reunited with their families.
Too often, owners are unable to reunite with their lost pets because of out-of-date contact information associated with a microchip. If we have a microchip number on file for your pet, it will show in your app under "My Pets".

If you aren't sure where your pet's registration is located, use the universal microchip lookup. Remember, the microchip is only effective if your contact information is kept up to date in the registry.

Are you interested in having your pet microchipped? Schedule an appointment through our app today or giving us a call!
