Family Veterinarian staff adhere to the AVMA position regarding the veterinary client-patient relationship (VCPR)

Online veterinary advice is outside of the limitations of the VCPR definition. "The simple definition of the VCPR is the relationship that exists when the veterinarian has come to

know an animal well enough to optimally diagnose and treat any medical conditions the animal may develop. Although straightforward, this definition does not do our profession justice. For most of us, the VCPR extends well beyond any individual patient visit." Dr. Christopher Gargamelli

Our practice is dedicated to improvement of animal welfare in all species, and One Health. All species will be covered in this page, including wildlife, as the health of one species affects the others. Because we are located in Ocala, many of our clients own horses, and for that reason horse health news will also be covered in this page. http://www.avma.org/onehealth/

I remember thinking as a child that turtles could get out of their shells, if they wanted to. In reality, their spines are fused to their shells. Almost all turtle species have a carapace made of bony plates fused together (similar to a human skull). Those bony plates are covered by scutes made of keratin, the small material that gives different species horns, nails and beaks.

Leatherback sea turtles are the exception to that rule. Their shell is made of osteoderms, bony deposits that are embedded in the thick leathery skin of the carapace. Osteoderms are interconnected in a way similar to how puzzle pieces fit together. The spine of a leatherback is connected to the shell with a cartilage.
