Dr. Tina Neel here.
Changing seasons can present significant health risks for your pets.
For example, every year I treat cats who are dealing with crystals in their urine caused by decreased water consumption in colder weather.
I also treat dogs and cats that are sick with antifreeze poisoning — because many people leave antifreeze in their garages during colder months. (It only takes a little to kill an animal.)
In my free Rockstar Pets newsletter later this week, I'll talk about what you can do today to prepare your pets for a healthy fall and winter.
A pet's weight is a crucial part of their overall health and longevity, and unlike humans, dogs and cats don't have the skills to manage their own weight effectively. It's up to their owners to make sure they're eating the right foods in the right portions and getting enough exercise.
This week on my Rockstar Pets free newsletter, I'll teach you how to know if your pet is currently at a healthy weight and what you can do to get them there if needed.
Dr. Neel here. Ever wonder what to do when you have an emergency with your dog or cat? It's not fun to think about, but having a plan in advance can make all the difference when disaster strikes. In my upcoming free newsletter, I'll teach you how to make an emergency preparedness plan for your pet. For example, if your pet collapses (which happens more often than you might think) knowing a few simple diagnostic techniques can help you respond appropriately. Dr. Neel here. This is the time of year when fleas and ticks are running rampant. Pets who play outdoors or go on walks have a risk of catching them and bringing them inside your house where they can also afflict people. To help avoid the discomfort and illnesses these bugs can bring, it's important to keep your pet protected against fleas and ticks. In my upcoming free newsletter, I'll teach you exactly how to do that.
Dr. Neel here. Thinking about getting a new pet? It's important to know what pitfalls to avoid when you're working with shelters or a breeder. Not asking the right questions can lead to a lot of expense and heartbreak if you end up with a pet that hasn't had a proper health screening. In my free newsletter later this week, I'll teach you what questions to ask to limit your risk of a bad experience. If you haven't already, sign up here to ensure you'll get the free email later this week: https://tinaneel.com/newsletter

Dr. Neel here.
Did you know that dogs and cats can donate blood a lot like people? And that doing so can save the lives of other beloved pets?
Tomorrow, on my free Rockstar Pets newsletter, we're talking about exactly that.
Sign up today to read all about how animal blood transfusions work and whether your pet meets the criteria to potentially save lives as a blood donor.
Please please please monitor your pets when they go out to potty this week! It's dangerously hot with the heat index 105 degrees and higher this afternoon. We have hospitalized dogs who have collapsed with heat exhaustion/heat stroke from only being outside for 20 minutes. We've seen dogs with an internal temperature of 109 (high normal is about 102) and their organs essentially are melting inside the body. Those dogs do not survive.
Short nose breeds like Boxers, bulldogs, and others are at higher risk so monitor them closely.
Also do not walk your dog on the sidewalk or street until tonight or early morning. Those surface Temps will burn their paw pads quickly.
If your pet does experience any of these symptoms today after being outside, bring them to us right away. Fan them and offer cool water to drink while on your way to us.

Our hospital is hosting Epica Animal Health CT imaging seminars and training this weekend for DVMs and RVTs from across the Midwest United States to help other hospitals utilize their own CTs to their full potential. This is a unique opportunity for our staff to collaborate with other experts in the imaging world. Our own Dr. Domnick, DVM, DACVS (Surgery Specialist) is pictured here giving a lecture on the importance of CT usage during her complex dental/facial procedures that she regularly performs. These extremely detailed 3D images of the CT gives her an exponentially better visual of problem areas and allows for the very best treatment of our patients.
We use our CT for not only dental procedures but scope procedures like rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, etc as well as canine/feline/exotic diagnostic and/or surgical procedures.

Dr. Neel here, and today I want to know...
How old is your pet in people years?
There's a rumor that you just take your pet's age and multiply by 7, but like most things, the truth is more complicated. It actually depends on breed and other factors.
This chart will help you figure out the age of your dog or cat in people years. Tell me in the comments what the answer is for your pet(s). And post a picture of them if you have one!
Next week, on my free Rockstar Pets newsletter, I'll be talking about how to take better care of older pets, so you can enjoy more special years with them. To get the newsletter for free every week, sign up here: https://drtinaneel.ck.page/148cfc19db

Dr. Neel here.
Today on my free newsletter, we talked about the causes of upset stomachs for dogs and cats—along what you can feed them in response.
The full article is too long to share here, but one tip I can give you is to make sure that, if your dog or cat is on a special diet, you don't feed them unapproved treats or table food.
Doing so can harm your pet and waste any money you're spending on special foods and medications.
We're hosting 3 veterinary students this week to get more clinical experience at our hospital and they are learning so much about ultrasound today! Our hospital performs so many ultrasounds each day that it really makes learning fun and interesting for these students.

Dr. Neel here.
Recently I caught this terrible lightning strike on one of the cameras at my farm in Piedmont.
It just missed the cows. And while it's definitely amazing to look at, I'm thankful no one was hurt.
There's a reason so many pets are scared of storms. You would be too if most of your species lived outside all the time.
One easy way to comfort pets during storms is to play a soothing sound that blocks out the noise of thunder. You can also give your animals a Kong toy with some food hidden inside so they can be distracted and entertained while the storm roles through.
These are just a few of the tips I shared in my recent Rockstar Pets free newsletter. Treating storm phobia has a lot of steps to it, which can include medication, environmental changes, and more. I dove much deeper in that email than I can do here on Facebook.
Next week we're talking about how best to feed dogs who have sensitive stomachs. To get the full email every week for free, sign up here: https://drtinaneel.ck.page/148cfc19db

After nearly 45 years of practicing veterinary medicine—most of them at Neel Veterinary Hospital, which I founded 33 years ago—I know a thing or two about taking good care of animals.
The photo above shows Dr. Deepan Kishore, our medical director, being awarded Veterinarian of the Year for Oklahoma — a first for an Indian veterinarian.
We're proud of what we do, but pet health doesn't start at the vet. It starts at home. I'd love to help you enjoy more happy, healthy years with your pets through my free newsletter.
Happy National Pet Day!! We're here to help all of your pets, and we love taking extra time to snuggle pups like LBJ (short for Little Brown Jones) 🥰 who enjoys being close. Show us your pets in the comments! How do they celebrate this special day?

Today is a happy day! Sweet Kora, 5 years old, has finished chemotherapy and is now in remission! 🎉 We started this journey 6 months ago with her diagnosis. She came in with swollen lymphnodes and trouble breathing. Pathology gave us the cancer diagnosis and Kora's mom knew she had more life to live so we began the CHOP protocol to treat. Kora is now in remission, feels so much better and back to playing with lots of energy! It's been a joy to be able to see her through this process - love you Kora ❤️

You may remember our story on little puppy Cardi who was diagnosed with PDA (Patent ductus arteriosus) & needed surgical repair. PDA is a congenital heart problem that needs surgery fairly quickly. This is a short video during her surgery of her heart beating and Dr. Kishore points out the repaired issue. So cool that her heart has now been repaired and she will live a great life with her family!
Monday night at NVH - everyone working hard for the pets who need us. All day and all night, no breaks. Exams, diagnostics, treatments.
We had a great reunion this morning! This pup was found roaming the street and brought to us by a Good Samaritan to get scanned for a microchip. She did have a chip and we were able to call her owner who said "Belle" had been missing for over a year!! She was in tears and drove to our hospital right away. Belle was so happy to see her mom again - look at her whole body wiggle with excitement 💖 This is why you should get all of your pets microchipped, even pets that are "indoor only" because you never know what might happen.
