Some helpful hints for adopting a pet from a rescue or shelter.
1) Ensure everyone in the house is " onboard" for this adoption.
To waste a rescuer's time and have a 30-minute conversation that will not produce an adoption is a waste of VERY limited time and energy.
We want to put an animal in your home! Help us to help you!
Please make sure everyone is on board before you reach out.
2) when you are asked to message for more info.. Please put your best foot forward. Could you take an extra minute to tell me about you and your pet experience? Maybe a little detail about your last pet or the pets currently in your home. Please know, if something like a Golden Retriever puppy is available... you are one of 50 people messaging, tell us something that sets you apart!
3) Please do not reach out if you're going on vacation and are not available for weeks.
Be prepared, that if you are approved that you will be expected to pick up your new fur kid within days.
We're scrambling for openings, we cannot hold an animal once a match is made.
4) please READ the posting.. if the posting says no other pets, or no young children.. trust the rescue knows the dog. Please don't waste time arguing. There are so many homeless animals. Find one that is an appropriate match for your home.
5) Be nice! The rescuers are helping animals on top of their own personal responsibilities of employers, family, their own pets and other life commitments. 6) There is always an adoption donation .the medical has to be paid for. Please understand, If "how much" is your first question, it may not be the right time for you to adopt. The cost of Veterinary Care has gone up 25% since covid. It is expensive to own a pet.
Please remember most of these folks are volunteer they may need 24 or 48 hours to get back to you. Please be patient. If more time than that has passed, please make contact again. Things do get lost in cyberspace.

HUNTER is ready for his forever home!
🚫 NO cats
⚠️ men skittish
✅️ kids over 8 friendly
✅️ women friendly
✅️ housetrained
✅️ crate trained
✅️ fixed
✅️ up to date on shots
✅️ dewormed
✅️ good with other dogs

Notes from foster Stephanie Arnold- "I've been fostering him for a few months now and worked through his fear of men to the point he can finally be pet by them. He's started following my husband to receive pets which is great! If you have treats it helps him warm up to you! He's still skittish with men but it's a big milestone for him and means he is ready to meet his family that can bond with him and help him go further!"

Hunter is a shepherd/terrier mix, about a year old, about 30-35lbs, up to date on shots, fixed, housetrained (but will have accidents if riled up) crate trained and knows sit, down, off, come, no, and "in" to go in his crate or to come back in the house. He was rescued off a kill truck in Puerto Rico as a stray. He will run back and forth to let you know he has to go potty outside. He is good with little dogs, takes warming up to strangers very slowly, unknown about bigger dogs, absolutely NO cats, good with kids but needs older kids to play with so he can't knock them down. (My kids are 7 and 8 years old) Loves cheese, loves being brushed, and LOVES hugs! He enjoys snuggling up with you on the couch or in bed, and playing with his eggplant crinkle bottle toy! He's not a chewer but he is a barker and will alert you so he's a great guard dog if you need a protective companion. He pounces like a deer and does have that puppy energy! He does NOT like strangers but i've been training/socializing him by giving them treats to give him and he's good with that :)

If you'd like to adopt Hunter or do a meet and greet please let me know and fill out an adoption application from Coal Mountain Animal Rescue Inc.

October is National Black Cat Awareness Month

Black cats are often seen as bad luck due to superstition that started in the Middle Ages in Europe. They were viewed as signs of death; witches in disguise; and the color was associated with death.

These superstitions unfortunately were passed along to further generations and still exist today causing black cats to be possibly overlooked. The superstition reached an all time high to the point where shelters would not adopt out any black cats during October. The idea was that black cats were only being adopted for the holiday mysticism. They were then abandoned afterwards or worst.

Then came along Layla Morgan Wilde, a holistic cat behaviorist, who noticed that there were only 2 days for black cat awareness. One in the United Kingdom and one in the United States. She decided that their needed to be more awareness for this discriminated color of cat on a more national level. Thus, National Black Cat Awareness Month was born.

How can you celebrate?

Let's start by dispelling the myths of black cats being bad luck.

In Egypt they are viewed as divine creatures whom the gods lived in. In Irish culture if a black cat showed up on your porch it was good luck. In Japan they are viewed as symbols of prosperity.

You can also adopt a black cat.

Some reasons to adopt one are: You can always find them in the snow. Holding a black cat is slimming. A lint brush won't be needed for a black tie affair. Their beautiful color is like an onyx gem. Their shedding is less noticeable versus other color cats. They have a "black belt" in cuddling.

You can also volunteer at your local animal shelter.

These cats need to be fed, cleaned and played with daily. So why not help out and volunteer at your local animal shelter. We at the Montclair Township Animal Shelter accept volunteer age 16+. You need to fill out a volunteer form and then come to an orientation. After that you just sign up for the different time slots and then come down and help.
