With approaching, we want to remind you to keep your pets happy, healthy, and safe this holiday weekend with these tips:

☀️ Beat the heat: Dogs are susceptible to heat stroke. Make sure there is plenty of water and shade for your furry friends to keep cool.

🍽️ Protect your plate: Many foods we enjoy on Labor Day Weekend such as onions, corn cobs, chocolate, grapes, alcohol, bones, and more can be toxic to pets or pose an intestinal blockage.

🍔 Guard the grill: Keep pets away from the grill, grill tools, lighter fluid, and matches in order to avoid burns and hazardous chemical ingestion.

🎆 Forego the fireworks: Not only can fireworks frighten pets, but they can also cause severe burns. Keep your pets calm and safe in a quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area.

If your pet should experience an emergency over the holiday weekend, remember that EAHCC is open 24/7 for emergencies.

Are you prepared for a pet emergency? 🚑 🚨

Here are 4 easy steps to help you prepare for a pet emergency:

✅ Be Prepared: Learn how to get to EAHCC ahead of time or save our address in your phone (10225 Custer Rd.) so you know where to go in the middle of the night. Keep a folder of pertinent medical information for your pet at home and bring it with you to the ER. This could include recent lab work and current medications.

✅ Don't wait: If your pet is very sick, in distress, or experiencing an emergency our team is always prepared to help you upon your arrival. If you need help getting your pet out of the car and into the ER, please call us before you arrive: 214-547-9900.

✅ Anticipate Costs: Depending on your pet’s condition and illness, the cost for emergency pet care may be more than your typical veterinary costs. Consider signing up for pet insurance. We accept Care Credit and ScratchPay as payment options in your time of need.

✅ Be Safe: Always put collars and leashes on dogs and place cats and small dogs in carriers before they arrive to the ER. The waiting room is a busy place with people coming and going, and we don't want your pet to escape in transport to the hospital or in the waiting room.

Meet the one and only, Princess! 👑 💕

Princess came to us with a swollen ear flap, which turned out to be an ear hematoma. 👂 🐶 This all started with a really itchy ear infection that caused her to scratch and shake her head hard enough to rupture the tiny, delicate blood vessels in her ear flap. This then caused a pocket of swelling that needed to be treated.

While not life-threatening, both ear infections and ear hematomas need to be treated as soon as possible to prevent further issues. 🚑

We hope you're feeling better and back to living your best life, Princess! ❤️

🐾 Meet Caitlyn Harris, our supercharged Veterinary Technician with a heart as big as Texas! ❤️ Graduating from PIMA Medical Institute in 2018, Caitlyn has been rocking it in Vet Med and Emergency/Critical Care since July 2017. Originally a Texan, she circled the globe during her Navy days 🌍 before settling back in the Lone Star State in 2018.

Caitlyn's furry family is as diverse as her travels! 🐾 There's Ice 🐕, the almost 8-year-old Pomsky; Cas 🐾, the 12-year-old Pittie/Dalmatian mix; Odin 🐾, the 7.5-month-old German Shepherd/Husky pup; and on the feline front, Thor 🐱 and Mushu 🐱, aged 5 and 4 respectively.

When she's not at the clinic, Caitlyn's soaking up the Texas sun ☀️ by the pool or lake, savoring every moment with her son as he explores the great outdoors. Fun fact: Caitlyn served in the Navy for 4 years and even has a wild tale about losing a fingertip during her service! 👀

Give Caitlyn and her crew a shout-out and share your own fur-family stories! 🐾

🌊🐾 Whether at the beach, poolside, or near lakes, here are some tips to keep your pets safe:

✅ Supervision: Always watch your pets around water. Not all dogs are natural swimmers, and even those who are can get tired.

✅ Life Jackets: Consider a life jacket for your pet, especially if they're new to water or boating.

✅ Fresh Water: Provide plenty of fresh water to prevent dehydration, especially after swimming.

✅ Rinse Off: Rinse off saltwater or chlorine after swimming to avoid skin irritation.

✅ Pool Safety: Secure pools with a fence or cover to prevent accidental falls.

✅ Training: Teach your dog how to exit a pool safely if they accidentally fall in.

Let's make this summer a safe and enjoyable one for our furry friends! 🐶💦

We ❤️ Lucy the Great Dane! 🐶 😍

Lucy transferred to us from another facility for a GI foreign body. Lucy had ingested something she shouldn’t have, and it obstructed her intestinal tract causing her to be unable to hold down any food or water. Left untreated a foreign body can be life threatening. Luckily, we were able to get Lucy into surgery and remove the foreign body before it caused further damage and complications. This lovable "gentle giant" is recovered and doing well. 💜

If your pet has ingested a foreign body, do not hesitate to reach out to us at (214) 547-9900.

Doolin from The Doolin and Dalton Gang came to us for Lantana ingestion. 🌿 🌸

Lantana is toxic plant for our furry friends. Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing and even liver disease. We immediately started emesis to get as much of the plant out of his system. We administered IV fluids, several different medications, and monitored his blood work closely. We even provided extra snuggles and blankies for this brave boy! 💚

Doolin is doing great and continuing to improve!

Meet Dr. Drew Burnett, one of EAHCC's Emergency Veterinarians. 🐾

Dr. Burnett graduated from The Ohio State University and has been practicing veterinary medicine, specializing in emergency care, for the past four years. He shares his home with a lively bunch of pets: Ava, a 10-year-old Terrier; Sajin, a 4-year-old Siamese cat; and Cleo, a mischievous 2-year-old Sphynx. 🐕 🐈

Originally hailing from Ohio, he made the move to Texas after vet school to be with his wife, who captured his heart. Texas has quickly become home, and he particularly loves indulging in Texas BBQ.

When he's not at the hospital, you can find him exploring new travel destinations with his family ✈️, casting a line while fishing 🎣 , or simply enjoying an active outdoor lifestyle. 🌲 ☀️

It’s that time of year where summer BBQ grilling is a popular way to cook your food. 🍔 🔥

It can be hard to resist your pet’s begging eyes, but keep in mind some common foods can be harmful for them. Meat bones and corn on the cobb can damage and create food blockages in their system. Onions, garlic, avocados, and some fruits can be toxic. ❌ If you must give in to their pleas, stick to a small portion of lean, well-cooked meat.
