Our baby turkeys that this farmstand has made possible have arrived!! And chicks, too! Thank you to everyone making this happen for my kid. We are going to have more plants out soon, I have been propagating like a mad woman!

Ruth really wanted to do an experiment in raising sustainable poultry for the table, and to see if it’s possible on our 1/4 acre to raise a couple of turkeys for the table (we’ll see if they become dinner, I have a suspicion the female may become a pet…or at least kept for eggs). And so much of permaculture is just that: experiments in sustainability.

We don’t have a place to raise poultry, so where are we undertaking this project? Here is a look at our poultry raising set up, and how this project demonstrates the need for community interconnectedness and “Share the Surplus” if we want to truly move toward resilience.

We are open today.

Available for a donation (or, as always, free if you need them and cannot afford to pay):

Purple tree collard cuttings. No need to use hormone, just plant deeply and keep watered. They root easily.

Aronia berry

Our last Victoria rhubarb

Fig cuttings: Negronne (a deep purple fig- my favorite) and Desert King (green with strawberry interior). Please note the fig rooting tips in the farmstand: take 3-4, and pot them in well-draining medium. They root very easily without hormone.

We are open today! Just a few things in the stand, but lots more in the coming weeks.

If you are interested in growing figs we have Desert King fig cuttings - cut this morning. This is the best variety of fig in the Pacific Northwest - it produces large green figs with a beautiful strawberry-like interior.

Cuttings root very easily and we recommend you take three or four and stick them in the soil. I have had about 75% success rate with cuttings so make sure you take more than one. You do not need rooting hormone.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the folks who supported this little project in 2021. Yesterday, thanks to the proceeds of the sand, I was able to order 2 turkeys, 4 chicks, and 2 ducklings for Ruth to add to her flock. They’ll be arriving in April!

Proceeds this year will go toward food and care and also help fund a little literary/art piece as part of this project.

We are open today! Just a few things out so early in the season:

- Victoria Rhubarb starts (one taken before I even got the photo snapped!)

-Japanese iris bareroot divisions in a mix of dark purple, light purple, and yellow/white. Japanese iris do well in poorly draining soil/soggy soil and can tolerate some shade. I have mine in my rain garden. They only get about 8 inches tall.

We will have a LOT more starts and cut flowers rolling out in early spring.

All proceeds go to my eldest kid’s poultry project! Thanks!

Just a little teeny tiny bit windy out there today, folks. Stay safe.

Hope you all are doing well. We’ve been closed for several days and will be closed for several more. Apologies for that: life is super hectic right now.

Question: would folks be interested in cuttings of perennial tree collards to root their own over the winter?

Or perhaps rooted cuttings in the spring?

Thank you to everyone who has come to our little farmstand. We have completely sold out of Persimmons in less than a week.

Good news: it is now Medlar season! Come try this ancient fruit, with complex caramel spice notes.

If you want to eat medlars, please know that they need to soften in a process called “bletting", so they will be ready to enjoy a few weeks after you bring them home from the farm stand.

We have a little bit more quince left and purple tree Collards as well. Hope you all are staying warm and dry.

Persimmons are in the farmstand the next few days. They one of my favorite fruits: no acid, pure sugar. They are delicious fresh, baked into cakes and quick breads, dried, and frozen (eat them with a spoon like sorbet!).
