Churu Champion!
Wesley had a lengthy appointment recently which he had little patience for.... unless he was licking Churu. To his credit, he never lost interest (not even looking up for his picture until we took an empty tube away to get his attention).

An update on our previous post about changes in travel to Canada & Mexico:
Many of the CDC's proposed changes for entry into the US were rolled back prior to implementation; there are still a few things to be aware of:

-Currently, there is not a clear way to travel with dogs younger than 6 months.
-There are additional restrictions if your dog has visited a high-risk rabies country in the past 6 months (US, Canada and Mexico are all on the low-risk list).
-All dogs must complete a CDC Dog Import Form prior to entry into the US (though it can be completed quickly on any device w/ internet access)

Per the CDC website:
In addition to having a receipt for a CDC Dog Import Form:
-Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival.
-Dogs must be at least 6 months old at time of entry or return to the U.S.
-Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them.

There are four requirements for dogs that have ONLY been in countries that are dog-rabies free or lo

Many of our clients are accustomed to easy travel to Canada and Mexico with their dogs. Please be aware of changes starting August 1st that will affect your ability to return to the US:

Starting on August 1, 2024, dogs entering or returning to the United States must meet new, specific requirements depending on where they have been in the 6 months before entering the U.S. and where they received their rabies vaccines (if required).

The current heat wave is a good reminder that we can all learn a bit more about how to help our pets manage this weather.

Use caution on hot asphalt and pavement-
Blacktop retains a lot of heat and can be much hotter than the ambient temperatures. While the pads on a dog's paw are a lot tougher than our skin, they can still suffer burns from walking on hot pavement. If you cannot put your own hand or stand barefoot on the pavement for about 10 seconds, then it is likely too hot for your dog to walk on too.
So...
Limit activity to the cooler times of the day-
While the most direct sunlight occurs around noon, the day will be the hottest towards late afternoon, around 3-5 p.m. Plan for walks in the early morning or evening hours to avoid the hottest times of the day.

(Tips from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine)

As many of our clients are painfully aware, the loud noises from fireworks can cause symptoms of fear and anxiety in pets, ranging from mild trembling, panting, and hiding, to severe panic with attempts to escape through windows or fences, risking severe injury or loss. We encourage you to have a pl...

We're already seeing grass getting tall and developing seeds. Every year we remove these sharp, barbed seed bodies (often called foxtails or grass awns) from ears and eyes or burrowed between toes. Many dogs end up at emergency clinics for treatment, which may explain this new poster, compliments of Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital.

As it gets warm and dry, avoid areas with high grass and be aware of any foxtails clinging to your dog's haircoat and remove them before they can become a painful problem.

For those of you that have followed our annual unveiling of artwork by Jen Leber on each Chinese New Year (for the last 10 years!) my apologies for this belated introduction to this year's Year of the Dragon! We are so grateful that she continues to share her talents with us.

Today is the start of the Lunar New Year.
Sending best wishes to all!

🐉 Did you know that each year of the Lunar New Year zodiac is associated with an animal (which runs on a 12 year cycle) but there is also an element? There are five elements: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. This upcoming Lunar New Year is the year of the Wood Dragon. The last year of the Dragon was in 2012, and its element was water. Wood is associated with strength, flexibility, and the ability to adapt and thrive. The last time there was a year of the wood dragon was 1964. (For those of you around in 1964 – what stands out to you most about that year?)

✨ May you all thrive in this Year of the Wood Dragon!

🏮 Celebrate the Year of the Wood Dragon at Lan Su Feb 7- Mar 2 with activities ranging from cultural performances, calligraphy, family crafts, and the iconic Lantern Viewing Evenings. Visit lansugarden.org/LunarNewYear or link in bio to learn more.
