A dog myth we'd like to debunk is that it's good to take food/treats away from your dog so they get used to it and won't react when it happens.

WRONG! This is the kind of thing that might CAUSE your dog to have guarding and reactivity when it comes to food.

If your dog is eating its food nicely or happily chomping on a treat and not doing anything unsafe or "wrong", then leave them alone! That's their time to eat and enjoy. It is very important to teach your dog the command to "leave it" so that if they do have something they shouldn't, you can easily get them to let it go. If they are actively engaged in appropriate behaviors--let them enjoy their treats in peace!

Dogs deserve their own little bubble from people and other dogs while they are eating or enjoying treats. Don't cause problems where there aren't any to begin with.

It's FRIDAY! And you know what that means--it's time to show off one of our amazing adoptable dogs. This week we've got a big boy who is big on fun and big on love. Titan is just terrific! He's a big guy but he's young so he needs people who will continue to work on training with him (he's been working with some trainers to give him a good foundation to build on!). FRR Alum Poppy (FKA Chick) just celebrated her two-year Gotcha Day with her family!

👑Her mom says she is an awesome dog with a rock-solid temperament. She thinks she is so perfect that she would make an excellent therapy dog!

😅Poppy is in her truest form when she’s romping through a creek, swamp, or lake while she tries to get her brother (who hates water) to chase her.

😍She is a go-with-the-flow kind of girl who is so tolerant of everything!

🥺Poppy is lucky enough to have a FRR Alum brother named Yoshi (FKA Jax) whom she absolutely adores!

We are so grateful to the Wake County Speedway for letting us set up and educate folks on our rescue!! We raised over $800 in a 50/50 thanks to our amazing volunteers and to many generous race fans for buying tickets!

Our first week of OUR fifth year: why not go in BIG in freedom rides? You'll have to keep checking back as EIGHTEEN of this week's addtions are too young to be available for adoption. We are grateful to the two families who will make sure their mamma dogs are spayed through FRR - and that they want the puppies (and potential adopters) to go through proper vetting with our rescue. We do have four adorable doggos who are looking for their perfect person! Three are PRECIOUS small scruffs -- two 2.5 year old brothers and the tiniest 3-month-old! Rounding out a VERY busy anniversay week is an 'middle aged' gal needing health care for all very fixable issues (spay, dental, bloodwork, etc.)

Yesterday we celebrated FIVE YEARS of Freedom Ride! It's been 5 years since our founders Mollie and Larry picked the first Freedom Ride Foster up and brought him home. So much has happened in the last 5 years and we're so proud of how far we've come.

Our favorite part is seeing our former foster dogs thrive with their forever families. If you've got a Freedom Ride Alum, drop a photo below and let us know what their name was as a foster so we can see how all our pups are doing now!

Today's 5th Anniversary Party could not have been more perfect! A HUGE thank you to the adopters who brought our dogs back to show us how well they are doing, to the fosters for bringing adoptable dogs out, the army of volunteers who made it happen .... the fabulous vendors who joined and to the stellar crew at Clouds Brewing for hosting such a fun celebration! Our first five years has been keeping true to our "no paws left beind" mantra. Freedom Ride Rescue takes in dogs of all ages, sizes, breed mixes and various health statuses! Shelby came to us VERY pregnant (her pups are all adopted so it is her turn now). iHop is healthy, healed and for adoption; he had an old injury requiring weeks of restriction, and he is of the 18 dogs who went through heartworm treatment this last year. Ellis was part of a litter than battled Parvo. We lost one pup - rest in peace little Magnolia. Five survived: Ellis, Juniper and Pinky are healthy and looking for their perfect people! Rocky is here to represent both large dudes (he's 80 pounds) and our senior crew at age 14(ish). And the lovely Midnight is one of our hospice cases living the best last chapter full of love and adventure.

While the unwanted pet population in North Carolina continues to be out of control, Freedom Ride is helping as best we can - rescues have never been more vital than right now. The volunteers, fosters, adopters and donors help this road trip stay on track. Tomorrow's celebration is about the dogs of Freedom Ride - but it also about the incredible people that support us and make it possible.
