Demodex mites can present in the a mild focal juvenile form as well as aggressive generalized form as shown here.
The generalized adult form is due to an incompetent immune system and is very rare in other breeds. That is why many vets who are unfamiliar with the bulldog breed assume it is an allergy and infection, treating it with steroids which makes it worse.
Treatment depends on the immune-suppressed cause, but should always include immune boosters, stress reduction, a balanced quality diet, and medicated antiseptic shampoos and gels.Â

Here is a demodex red mite under the microscope doing his shifty "sat night fever" blues-style floor dance.
Note his elongated body and tentacles vs the more rounded body of the ear and sarcoptic mange mites
We will present to you in the coming day a video of the juvenile mild demodex type vs the more severe generalized one.

Last week's video challenge covered cherry eye and a skin problem that many identified as possibly demodox (red mite).
Demodex can be diagnosed with a simple skin scrape as demonstrated here.Â
The scrape is smeared on a slide with a drop of oil and placed under a microscope (low power will do).
Does anyone want to guess why the scrape requires that we tease the skin till we can see redness (blood)?
We will post for you how the mites look under the microscope

Great correspondence from our astute community.
The rescue has a cherry eye and demodex mite.
This video demonstrates how to massage a cherry back under the third eyelid. Keep in mind that most times at some point the cherry will refuse to be replaced back and surgery will be required
We will post some more info about demodex later this week

The last video was a tough challenge
This was a urethral stone that Dr. K. took out, and then creating a permanent opening.
Warning: In most breeds, you can take the stone out and close back the urethra; not so in bulldogs.
Bulldogs suffer from a type of stone that is rare in other breeds; that type is likely to reoccur despite dietary changes.
Therefore, it is usually best to leave a permanent wide opening at the scrotal area so your bully can pee future stones through that opening.
Note in the video the little stones blocking the urethra removed by Dr Kramer.

We received great answers from all of you. GREAT JOB
When no weight is placed on the leg, it's a painful condition!
# 1 cause of bulldog non-weight bearing hind limping is ACL rapture (its painful)
Note: TPLO is a surgical ACL repair procedure.Â
IVDD: is a neurological problem, the injury is at the spinal cord level, so the back is painful. The leg might not even feel pain and often is dragging
In contrast to other large breeds bulldog hip problems are rarely a cause of such a painful limp in bulldogs. Some vets don't realize that and will associate the limp and x-ray "bad hips" findings as the primary cause.Â
MPL: Like hips, it might contribute to the ACL injury but rarely cause such a degree of pain by itself
Warning: Don't assume anything, examine the dog and have radiographs taken. The clinical signs must match the findings as related to BULLDOGS. đž
This case was a FEMORAL FRACTURE đ¤ (fracture can also happen due to bone tumor). We fixed the fracture and all turned well. đđ

This is our third educational vaginal skinfold dermatitis segment.Â
For those cases where prevention was not practiced or the rare severe ones that require surgery, we offer vaginoplasty.
The "cosmetic" surgery requires the removal of the excess folds, stretching the skin, and pulling the hood up.Â
The surgical video is graphic so we are posting the 2 weeks post-op surgery removal day one.
Remember, PREVENTION IS CURE

A hooded vulva is a roll of skinfold that covers the dog's private area on top, while vaginal skinfold dermatitis is the side folds.Â
Many bulldog females suffer from the former or/and later. The damped folds lead to inflammation that is itchy and painful and the infections can ascend into the urinary tract leading to chronic unreolved UTI.
Like the other bulldog skinfold (nose, toes, face, tail) PREVENTIVE CARE that includes bully antiseptic topical therapeutics is critical.Â

Thank you for your participation in our last challenge
The most likely cause of hind leg paresis or paralysis is an injury to the spinal cord
For Fr. Bulldog, the most common reason would be a herniated disk.Â
Vertebral malformations, especially in puppies, would be another common cause (spina bifida, hemivertebra, etc).,
For severe IVDD, It's important to seek medical advice, timing is critical.
Surgery to decompress the disc can prevent irreversible damage to the cord.
Our last posting on this topic would address preventive care. đžđ¤

We apologize for the unpleasant image; we thought it could serve as a reminder of the importance of preventive ear cleaning and rinsing.
Note the cutting sound, Dr. Kraemer used a bone cutter to open up the external ear canal, which normally is cartilage, but in the case of chronic disease (end-stage stenotic otitis) it becomes fibrous than calcified and ossified. No matter how much medicine, deep cleaning, and goodwill, this is an irreversible situation and a painful one. It could also lead to other complications. The only option is TECA surgery.
Regarding hearing loss, the hearing nerves are in the middle ear the diseased external ear canal is closed, thus having it or not is not going to make a difference, the sound wave can not travel through a closed ear canal (it's like having a soundproof earplug)Â

An allergy can be triggered by many conditions and present in many different forms, distributions, seasons, and itch intensities.
Note the distribution (ears pinna, chin, neck, and distal ventral abdomen). Also, note the different appearances (lesions on the ear pinna, redness belly & chin).
Dr. Kraemer published many articles on the topic (see https://vet4bulldog.com/zen-health-and-bulldog-maintenance/skin-coat-in-bulldogs/itching-allergy-in-bulldogs-and-french-bulldogs/
Finally, regardless of the underlying cause, all bully allergies and skin conditions will benefit from preventive & care topical and/or supplement therapeutics.
Dr. Kraemerâs bully line of topicals & supplements do not require a prescription, they are safe, easy to implement, effective, and inexpensive.

This is our final "BULLY TAIL series" post.
Many owners worry about the aesthetics of tail removal, but when done correctly itâs very satisfying.
It could take a few weeks before everything heals but besides that, itâs a smooth look.
I hope you all enjoyed the series and learned something in the process.
Prevention & Care is a must but for those few who canât or are unable then a tail removal should be considered.
