Orchard Animal Outreach

Orchard Animal Outreach Promoting action and education to nurture respect and compassion in order to help abused and homeless animals. Those not adopted are the ones to go.
(3)

Orchard Animal Outreach was created based on lofty goals. We would like to eventually establish a shelter for the shelter animals that are due to be euthanized for a variety of reasons. For some, the time is up, many shelters only keep strays a set number of days. For some, there isn't enough room, some shelters are filled to capacity, some must go in order to make room for more. Some are labeled

"unadoptable" because they are old, sick, scared and evaluated as aggressive and therefore, not even given a first chance let alone a second. It is our goal to build a shelter/sanctuary, large enough to accommodate such animals from shelters throughout the state. In addition, we plan to include a low cost clinic, to continue to provide affordable services for the caretakers of homeless animals, to provide low cost spay and neuters, to participate in TNR with the express goal of only returning truly feral cats to established, well monitored colonies and get friendly cats and kittens off the streets and into rescue groups. We plan to provide interim boarding for these animals, to sponsor adoption events, to treat injured or ill shelter animals, and to provide hospice in some cases. We are dedicated to educating the public, to promote responsibility and a lifelong commitment to pets.

An intact male cat has a very hard life!

They fight for food, mates, and territory. They get wounds and abscesses. They lose eyes and contract diseases.

The average lifespan of an intact male cat is 2-5 very difficult years. If neutered, they can live 10 years or more.

We often hear, โ€œItโ€™s just a male cat.โ€

Itโ€™s just as important to TNR the male - both to prevent injuries and the spread of disease but also to prevent many, many kittens.

Donโ€™t turn a blind eye to the tom cats in your neighborhood. They need your help, too.

Thank you, Trap Dat Cat, for this information.

We love him and all the others like him!!!

Male cats who are neutered are less likely to fight and defend their territories.

Diseases are less likely to be spread, and fewer injuries will happen because they arenโ€™t fighting, which leads to much happier and healthier male cats.

Make sure all male cats are so they aren't beat up, injured, & suffering.

This is a awesome soft release cage, it could be a bit better with a table or second level for more space. It could also be partially covered if the cats were upset.

We acquired 4 working cats from Laurel when their owner unexpectedly passed away. They had already been fixed, vaccinated and ear tipped 18 months ago when we helped him TNVR. So happy to be able to rehome them together this morning after getting their shots updated. They have this amazing acclimation cage to hang out in before release in 3 weeks. Congrats SQUAD CAR, MAC1, MAC2 & MAC3.

This is a problem everywhere, a few people taking on a whole communities and tax funded animal services responsibilities trying to keep the cat populations contained and give them better pain free lives.
This I feel is a battle we will not win...(at the current rate we are and have been going)
The very few people who take responsibility and make sure every colony is contained and caretaker educated, and cat fed, WILL BURN OUT, (in flames) It seems there are fewer and fewer who step up to take their place.
Changes within municipalities and government need to be implemented, not lies of success and progress when clearly the problem is out of control, with no help or change in site.

We would like to take this time to explain our program. We are Community Cats Coalition located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We try to help every person that calls. We believe every cat's life is worth saving . We are working with Forgotten Cats which is an entirely different non-profit organization who has a grant to help the cats of Worcester/Wicomico counties. We do all the trapping, the running, the transporting, (3 hour drive) the cleaning + feeding of the cats pre surgery. We are not a vet clinic nor is Forgotten Cats a full service clinic. They are a much needed high volume low cost trap/neuter/ return clinic. While we understand you may be anxious about your colony cats we cannot give constant updates as we are inundated with phone calls + caring for our own shelter cats! We are down to only three people in our organization. The calls that are coming in daily are between 5 to 10 per day. We cannot keep up! We are physically, emotionally and financially drained. We are not sure we can keep going. We have a list of people still waiting for us to get to them. Pregnant cats, animal control + eviction calls take priority as 90 percent of the time, these cats have already been trapped or are on a time limit. If you call us about a mama cat and babies we are asking you to shelter them in place until we can get to you. Or you can come pick up a trap and we will show you how to trap them. We just cannot keep up with all the calls. We hope the public understands. We have helped thousands and thousands of cats over the 40 years we have been rescuing but it is time for a newer younger generation to step up and help! We simply cannot continue to go at the pace we are going. We are out 24/7 every single day and still the calls continue to come in. If anybody would like to help us trap, we will gladly teach you. We are in desperate need of volunteers as well as funding. Please visit our website or contact us at 443-909-8047. We thank all of our supporters who have helped us save so many lives!

โ€œThe general public does not understand the dire consequences of โ€œjust one litter.โ€ They donโ€™t understand how pets reproduce. If we neuter before adoption, their lack of understanding, procrastination, and financial priorities all become non-issues.

We know from studies that compliance with spay/neuter contracts and deposit systems is only 60%. We know that the contracts may not stand up in court. If only a small percentage of the pets we place for adoption go on to have โ€just one litter,โ€ are we not, in fact, contributing to the very problems weโ€™re working so desperately to solve?

Perhaps we should take the responsibility on ourselves, by seeing that no animal ever leaves our care before it is sterilized.โ€

"Today, I didn't have room for your dog; I had to say no. You said you were moving and couldn't take him with you. You couldn't wait till next week for me to be able to help, so you dropped him in a parking lot. He was hit by a car and died.๐Ÿ’”

I didn't have room for your puppies today, I had to say no. You donโ€™t want all these puppies and they have to go today. I spent hours trying to find help. When I finally do, I call you back, but it's too late, you "took care of them."
The high-kill shelter emailed "the list" today. I didn't see it in time, I was busy trying to find help for your puppies. When I offer to save them, it's already too late as they are all gone.๐Ÿ’”

I tried to save your dog today, but I was too late. The damage you did was too much to overcome. Your dog attacked someone today, and now he dies for your neglect.
You tagged me on a Facebook post today, someone giving their dog away for free. I thought someone else would save him, so I didn't respond. No one did. Instead he was given to a dog fighter.

You dropped off your dog today. After 13 years he pees on your carpet, so he had to go. He had cancer. I held his paw while he drew his last breaths in fear surrounded by strangers.๐Ÿ’”

You called me today, your dog was acting strangely, and you can't afford the vet. Your dog was in labor, but you didn't notice until it was too late because she lives out on a chain. She is gone when I get there.๐Ÿ’”

You hear about those the rescuers save, but all we can think about is those we lost.
Today. Everyday .๐Ÿ’”

Thank you to all those that have the most fragile of hearts and wake up each day knowing it will be broken. We need you more than you know! ๐Ÿ’œ

Please consider joining us in our mission to save those without a voice. You can help by adopting & if you can't adopt maybe you can foster, it's free & saves lives! If you can't adopt or foster can you send a donation (monetary, food, blankets, kennels, puppy pads, cat litter, toys, beds) to a rescue?
If you cannot donate can you volunteer -Please contact your local Animal Shelter, they always need help with
transportation, helping with events and fundraisers, cleaning kennels, walking dogs, taking pictures, stuffing mailersโ€ฆetc๐Ÿ’›

If you cannot volunteer can you share the photos of the animals we are trying to saveโ€ฆ

Crush or cut your yogurt cups and other containers before tossing them out! It only takes a few seconds but saves lives.

These fruity cups are enticing when people toss them out as litter, but even those that have been safely thrown away can pose a risk. Trash bags may tear and spill. Trash may fall out of the bin or off the dump truck.

Hungry critters stick their heads inside to eat the leftovers but then can't get out.
Little skunk paws arenโ€™t designed for the grasping action necessary to pull off the cup. The yogurt cups are narrow at the top and wider at the base -- is the perfect shape to trap a skunkโ€™s wedge-shaped head. Squirrels and other animals also fall victim to the containers. They will stumble aimlessly and suffocate if intervention is not swift.

Even recycled items are at risk of falling from the bin and posing a threat to wildlife. This applies to trash and recyclables to be proactive and protect our wildlife.

Please โ€“ donโ€™t trap without a plan. You may think you are helping the cat, your intentions are good โ€“ but you need to think it out BEFORE you take action. Exceptions to this would be a cat in distress โ€“ he was hit by a cat, heโ€™s lethargic/obviously ill, heโ€™s dyingโ€ฆ yes, trap/capture that cat and get it to a vet. But when you have time to wait โ€“ stop. Make a plan, THEN take action!

So you trapped that cat. Now what?

The biggest mistake newbies make when trapping a cat is to trap it, and then go looking for help. HUGE mistake โ€“ for many reasons.
โ€ข MOST important โ€“ what if that cat is lactating? Sheโ€™s got babies out there who will die if you keep her too long โ€“ but how long will it take for you to find some help? Appointments are hard to come by these days, and a vet at a private clinic is going to charge full price โ€“ can you afford it?
โ€ข Do you have a place to hold this cat while you are looking for help? The CCC has more than once received emails with this exact scenario โ€“ "I trapped this cat, can you take it?โ€ No, because the CCC is not a shelter or rescue โ€“ our members who trap hold the cats THEY are trapping in their own homes. If you are trapping, you need to expect YOU will be caring for this cat while you find help.
โ€ข Do you know how to take care of a cat in a trap? How long will the cat sit in that trap, without food/water or a place to pee/poop?
โ€ข You want to get it fixed โ€“ have you already made an appt? If not, it may be weeksโ€ฆ Appt FIRST โ€“ then trap.
โ€ข What is your plan for that cat? If no one will take it, are you going to bring it inside and try to socialize it? Will you be releasing it to live where you trapped it? Shelters, Rescues and independent Rescuers are up to their eyeballs in cats โ€“ what will you do if no one cat take the cat?

Please โ€“ donโ€™t trap without a plan. You may think you are helping the cat, your intentions are good โ€“ but you need to think it out BEFORE you take action. Exceptions to this would be a cat in distress โ€“ he was hit by a cat, heโ€™s lethargic/obviously ill, heโ€™s dyingโ€ฆ yes, trap/capture that cat and get it to a vet. But when you have time to wait โ€“ stop. Make a plan, THEN take action!

We hear way too much our policies are way too strict and we should make it "easy" for people, and not require anything from them.

Responsibility goes both ways.

Our policies are in place to ensure the safety of each animal, this is always our main concern. As a small facility who does not charge much we must utilize our time efficiently to give each animal what they need and to be able to offer care to as many as we can.

Our policies allow that.

Please whatever low cost facility or non profit you use or ask for help, be kind to them and follow their policies, we run on pennies, hope, and caffeine.
If you are able, donations are always appreciated, and if not to us, give to a small local organization you love and trust, we need the help and are right here, boots on the ground in your neighborhoods.
