Sago palms are commonly found in warmer climates (such as southeast US regions) but can be found nationwide. These plants are EXTREMELY toxic to dogs and cats if ANY portion of the plant is ingested.

These plants can cause hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, blood clotting disorders, liver damage or failure, and even death can occur without immediate treatment.

Sago palm toxicity symptoms may include vomiting, bloody stool, jaundice, increased thirst, and bruising.

If you suspect your pet has consumed any part of a sago palm, immediately contact us at (210) 737-7373. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Polar Bear, an approximately 6-week-old puppy, was brought to MissionVet's Emergency department after being found unresponsive by A Doggie 4 You Rescue. Polar Bear, in critical condition, was immediately seen by our Board-Certified Criticalist - Dr. Beth Lozano. With quick diagnostics Dr. Lozano was able to determine this sweet guy was severely anemic and had a low blood sugar from intestinal parasites and fleas. Aggressive stabilization was provided by Dr. Beth Lozano and our Critical Care Team. By the next morning Polar Bear was eating on his own and asking for seconds! Polar Bear was discharged later that evening to his wonderful fosters and is now back at home with his littermates!

Happy National Veterinary Receptionist Week! 🙌 This week is dedicated to our veterinary client service representatives who help keep it all together for our patients and hospital teams. During an unexpected animal emergency or health crisis, people often feel distressed and vulnerable. These team members are typically the first point of contact to help determine urgency, schedule visits, explain processes, and guide pet parents to action. With their care, they help keep people and patients attended to and hospital operations running smoothly.

Join us in saying THANK YOU! To our wonderful client service team!

Are you planning to experience the April 2024 total solar eclipse? The eclipse will be safe for your pets as they are unlikely to stare up at the sun but reconsider bringing them outside during the event if you plan on watching with a large crowd of people. The excitement and loud sounds of all the people could cause your pet stress or anxiety.

If you must bring your pet to the eclipse viewing here are some tips:
🌑 Give your pet a break from the crowd so they don’t get too stressed
🌑 Have plenty of fresh water available for your pet
🌑 Ensure your pet is on a leash and has updated contact info on their collar/chip in case they get lost

✨ Introducing Woofle! ✨
We first met Woofle when she was brought in showing signs of right hind leg lameness. Our team diagnosed her with a tear in her Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CrCL), the ligament is responsible for maintaining joint stability when your pet is standing, walking, or running. This adorable girl had her consult and went in for TPLO surgery with Dr. Garcia a few days later. Her surgery was performed using a minimally invasive scoping technique, contributing to a faster recovery. Woofle has been one of our best patients, just look at that smile! 😃

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month! 🩹 Let's ensure our furry friends stay safe as we venture outdoors in the beautiful weather.

Remember, being prepared is key. Carry along a pet first aid kit packed with essentials, ensuring they are not expired and you can be readily utilized. Nonstick bandages, adhesive bandage tape, towels, absorbent gauze pads - check! Create your very own pet first aid kit at home with resources from ASPCA: https://www.aspcapro.org/resource/how-make-pet-first-aid-kit.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and have fun! 🐾 Remember MissionVet is here 24/7 in case your pet experiences an emergency requiring veterinary attention.
