Introducing our first graduating class of Facility Dogs: Duchess, Daisy, Charlie, Sandy, and Bear! 🎓
We are so proud of all the hard work these good boys and girls put in. They’re headed off to schools and physical therapy centers, where they are ready to bring comfort, support, and wagging tails to everyone they meet. 💚🐾

Our service dog team volunteers over two years of their time with each dog from the puppy stage and basic obedience to specific service dog skills which includes weekly training sessions with all the dogs in training. This is a unique premise that Co-Founders Carol Davis started in 1997.
At about two years old each of the dogs is matched with someone with mobility issues or PTSD. The trainer then spends two to three months in Transition Training with the team fine tuning the dog and handlers skills. Since the dog has had two years of training, in Transition Training they teach the human partner what the dog knows, and then teach the dog what skills that person specifically needs for their disability. A service dog can perform many tasks that can make living with a disability a bit easier. At Pawsitive Teams the team will have life-long support.

In our CICR Program (Active Duty Military Community Reintegration) our therapy dog teams work with injured outpatient active duty service members to give patients the support, encouragement, and optimism unique to canine therapy. This six-week Canine program is designed to help patients recovering from PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injuries) re-enter the community by establishing a greater sense of trust and less hyper-vigilance in public settings. We work directly under the guidance of a recreational therapists. Each service member is assigned a therapy dog to handle during the sessions that are held in a variety of community settings.

Goal-directed therapy is significantly different from the usual “meet and greet” hospital and nursing home type of animal assisted activities. The dogs are used both as a tool and a motivator to help clients (children and adults) achieve clearly defined goals as set by their therapist or teacher. #therapydogs #therapydog #therapydogsofinstagram #therapydogssandiego #sandiego #sandiegolife #clairemonthighschoolsandiego
Mary first applied for a facility dog in 2013. She was a school counselor and thought having a facility dog would be beneficial for the students. Mary was matched with Sejera, and worked with her trainer, Marcy Piasecki. After retiring the team went on to become a Certified Therapy Team with Pawsitive Teams, they have made a great team! Sejera is a gentle soul who loves being with children and offers comfort to them. They visit students with autism and other special needs.
Mary also volunteers in our
Community Outreach program. She connects with schools and other requests we get who are interested in our Therapy Program.

Facility dogs belong to facility professionals and both are trained and certified to work together to accomplish goals set by the facility for an individual or group. This includes court, rehabilitation centers or special education schools. The dog encourages movement, verbal and non-verbal communication, motivation, sense of personal security, and improved social interaction.
