Tuesday’s I take the boys to the park…

If you frequent dog parks you need to learn to read a room.

During today’s visit a fellow showed up who was not comfortable in the park at all.

The pup had his hackles up and could not relax. Beyond that he didn’t like when other dogs ran around or got near him. He started to chase other dogs very persistently. On top of that the dog mom was totally checked out and not paying attention or at least not in the vicinity of her dog.

My solution- leash the boys and get out of dodge and go for a walk!

Doesn’t mean that the dog was a bad dog. Who knows maybe even he has a good dog park days. But today he wasn’t feeling it and that’s OK… Maybe a walk is in order!!

So proud of my man Remi!

See you Remi didn’t like to get into the car. He’s also not super food motivated. It’s hit or miss when he likes treats and it’s hit or miss with what treat he likes. 🤷🏼‍♀️

One thing Remi does like is our walks/ bikes. So we started a game of getting in the car and then being rewarded with a walk. This meant we got three times a week to practice behavior. Nothing fast happens three times a week however it does happen.

We started with Remi getting rewarded for just putting two paws in the vehicle then walk. When we started I had to be in the vehicle for him even to do that.

We then progressed to him getting in the vehicle with me. Getting in the car with me and laying down. Getting in the car with me laying down and closing the door. Me out of the vehicle back to two paws in the vehicle then in the vehicle then him lay down and closing the door in the vehicle. Basically all the little steps we had to do.

Next it was great that Remi was doing that with me but he still needed to be able to do that with his guardians. I just got the report that they successfully got Remi in the car and close the door without any fighting 🙌🏻

So proud of Remi and so proud of Remi’s guardians for staying the course. Full disclosure this took over a year. But now we have 100 pound dog willingly getting into a car!!!

I still see Remi three times a week and we will continue to reinforce this behavior every single time we go on a walk.
