Living on the Hedge Hedgehog Breeders and Rescue

Living on the Hedge Hedgehog Breeders and Rescue I am a local hobby hedgehog breeder. I love these little animals and I will accept rescue hedgehogs if anyone needs me to.

I used to be a hobby breeder and have a small herd of misfits! I have retired breeders, sassy teenagers, and grumpy old men! I have stopped breeding and switched my efforts to the rescue side of things.

I’m sure some of you have noticed that I’m not as active on here as I have been in the past. In January, I had to put down Pineapple, then I had to put down my 18 1/2 year old cat, and then I found Atticus had passed away. It was all too much for my heart. I’ve been grieving. All of the losses have left me depleted and discouraged.

Last month, I was asked by a friend and her family, who I’ve been helping advise since they became hedgehog parents, to take their baby, Hedgie, and give her a forever home here with me. I wasn’t sure if my heart could take it, but I agreed. I’ve renamed her Mellie, and she’s doing great here with me. I’m really thankful that I’ve got her, as she is the single remaining hedgehog in my care now.

While I’m taking some time away to let my heart heal from all of the losses, I’m still always available on messenger if anyone has any questions or needs assistance or help with rescue.

This never gets any easier.

Zoey, my little vampire hog, I love you so much. I hope you are running, pain free, eating all the bugs you desire! I know you’re mom, Mamma Lo, dad, Spike, and all of your siblings were there welcoming you when you crossed the 🌈 bridge. I love you and will miss you so much. Until we meet again. 💔

Last night, I went upstairs to say goodnight to the hedgehogs, and found my sweet boy, Atticus, has passed away. I’m so broken right now. He was the sweetest boy, and I loved him so much.

I’m happy that he came to live with me 14 months ago and that I got to help him get away from the neglect he was dealing with, and give him a loving home for the remainder of his life. I just wish I could have had more time with him.

Rest In Peace my boy. I imagine you had quite the welcoming party up in Heaven. I hope you are running free and eating all the mealworms your heart desires. I will miss you so much. 💔

This month we’ve lost our rescue, Pineapple, our 18 year old resident cat, Jazzy, and now, our rescue, Atticus . 💔💔💔

We saw a new vet for euthanasia. She gave Pineapple a sniff of anesthesia, and pineapple was barely breathing, just from that. Once Pineapple relaxed, we were able to see how jaundice her belly was. The vet 100% agreed with me that Pineapple was very, very sick, and this was the best call for her.

Rest easy sweet girl, I’m glad I got to know you, even if it was only for a short time. ❤️

Unfortunately, Pineapple has been declining since coming to us. She has completely stopped eating, her skin is jaundice, and her urine is neon green. All of these things point to a major liver issue and/or liver failure. Hedgehogs do not recover from liver problems, so we had to make a hard decision about what was best for her. Euthanasia is scheduled for this afternoon. She is such a sweet girl, I wish we could have had more time with her. 💔

Earlier in the week, we took in Pineapple, a rescue, from a local family! She’s been a little shy, but is finally starting to warm up to me!!

Tonight, she ate some worms for me, and I just caught her running in her wheel! I’m glad she’s getting comfortable here!

I’ve taken some time away from the page to deal with some health issues, but I wanted to post a quick update about Moki.

In the last month, Moki has been thriving with her foster family! She has recovered from the tumor removal surgery and is back to running in her wheel! And, last week, we made the decision that her foster family will be her forever family!!

I’m so happy that Moki is doing so great! ❤️

Due to some health issues of mine that have come up, I’ve decided to place Moki with a foster family for a while. She went to her foster home today. Her foster family has sent me some videos, and she seems very happy there already!

Over the last year, we’ve racked up a lot of vet bills! I don’t like to ask for help, so I’m not going to! I do, however, have lots of mealworms available for sale right now. All proceeds from mealworm sales will be put towards vet bills on the CareCredit. If anyone wants to place an order, please send us a pm!

Please note, that we only sell locally and do not ship!

Moki-Bear is back home and doing well after her surgery!

Unfortunately, they found her uterus to be very swollen, and almost unrecognizable. Once they started to remove it, they found an incredibly large tumor growing off it. I can imagine that she will feel so much better in a week or so after having this huge thing removed!

Do to the size, we can assume it is cancerous. And that it’s a real possibility that Moki has or will have other tumors.

So, we will just do what we do, and try our best to give her the best life we can for as long as possible.

Thank you again to Dr. Lewcock, for making Moki’s surgery a priority on your last day! We are so grateful to have had you as our vet! We really hope you do make your way back out here to us again next year!!

Moki has been having bloody discharge from her lady parts on and off since I got her. We’ve tried antibiotics, anti parasitics, and gave her an ultrasound to be sure there were no stones or tumors. The only thing we found was extra lining in her uterus, which is most likely the cause. The only resolution would be to spay her. Since that would mean a surgery, we have been holding off to see if the problem would resolve itself.

Two days ago, Moki started having this discharge again. I called Thursday and put in a message for our vet.

Moki is scheduled for surgery early Thursday morning to get spayed! Hopefully, this will resolve the discharge and any discomfort she is having. 🤞

Miss Moki is still working on warming up to me, but she certainly likes nose rubs!!

A few weeks ago, we noticed that Willow, our foster, was really wobbly when walking. We, of course, took her to the vet. We were unsure exactly what the cause was, so we treated her for several different things. Unfortunately, she continued to get worse, until she could no longer stand up. On Wednesday, we went back to the vet, and made the decision that euthanasia would be the best thing to do. This was an incredibly difficult decision, but ultimately, the right one.

I’m so thankful her family trusted me with her care, giving me to opportunity to get to know and love her.

Willow was so loved. And she is greatly missed.

Rest In Peace my sweet Willow. Until we meet again ♥️

Eat tatters continued

1st photo, left ear mostly clean, right ear tattered

2nd photo, all the gunk I got off both Moki’s ears

3rd photo, all clean!

Ear tatters are caused by normal buildup of dead skin and fur, ears need to be gently rubbed with oil occasionally to remove the buildup

Worked on Moki’s ear tatters last night. Ear tatters are just an accumulation of dead skin cells and fur that gather on hedgehog ears. Rubbing a small amount of oil between your thumb and index finger and gently rubbing ears will loosen all that gunk up!

Moki was not happy with me doing the first ear! By the second ear, she must have realized I wasn’t trying to hurt her. She stoped fighting me and just let me rub her ears!

Welcome Miss Moki (originally Momo)! She came to us from a family up in PHX. She’s had a hectic couple of days! She arrived home on Saturday, when we had an excessive heat warning, and our air conditioning had just broke! It’s been a little crazy around here trying to keep everyone comfortable with the heat, but she is settling in! She is a little timid at first but opens right up once in your hand! We love her so much already!

Mr Atticus just hates nose rubs, as you can see!! ❤️

I don’t recommend hand feeding your hedgehog. Clearly, I have a hard time following my own advice! Miss Willow is just so darn cute, I can’t help myself!!

Hey guys! I’m still here! I suppose after losing Mamma Lo, I felt I needed to take a little time away from the page to grieve.

I started fostering Willow in March, and we noticed she was peeing blood. After taking her to the vet a few times, and a few rounds of antibiotics, she was still peeing blood. So, we did an X-ray, which showed no bladder stones. Then, we did an ultrasound, which showed she had a mass in her o***y. Dr. Lewcock did an exploratory surgery, took out the mass and spayed her, so the same mass will never grow back again. Willow did great through the surgery and has been recovering well. After having the surgery, she even has become litter box trained!

Everyone else has been doing well, Zoey is still my little vampire, and Atticus is still my timid boy!

I sold a lot of mealworms last month and have a shortage of full grown adults right now. Hopefully, in the next week or two I’ll have plenty to fill some orders to help pay for some of these vet bills that have been racking up!

Say hello to Willow! She is one of the five sisters that needed rescue back in January. Her new family is dealing with some big stuff right now, so we will be fostering her until things settle down for them.

Willow is so sweet. And a really good eater! She’s devoured all the food we’ve given her that last two nights!
