Here's a quick video update from Dr. Adam Christman, from @dvm360, about the canine 🫁🫁 respiratory disease that has been spreading throughout the country during the last year.
With confirmed cases in states close to us, it is a matter of time before we start seeing cases in AZ .
They have been studying this disease since the end of last year and there's just a few things we know about it. It is caused by a bacteria🦠 (NOT a virus), but it is not able to be cultured, making it difficult to isolate 🔬🧬. Symptoms are similar to those of kennel cough, but it does not respond to common antibiotics 💊💊used to treat kennel cough. While other respiratory diseases might last about 2-3 weeks, this new disease will cause symptoms for longer periods. Just like with any respiratory disease, it can progress to a pneumonia that might need hospitalization.
Unfortunately, for us here in AZ the symptoms are similar, if not the same, to Valley Fever. These include:
- Coughing
- Sneezing 🤧
- Difficulty breathing
- Nose or eye discharge
- Lethargy 🤒
- Decreased appetite
Because of this, it is recommended 🩺🩺 to test any dogs with respiratory symptoms for Valley Fever, as well as a PCR to rule out any other potential respiratory diseases.
The best way to prevent the disease is by avoiding places like boarding facilities, doggy day care, groomers (except for mobile groomers who keep their area clean), dog parks, etc., and making sure your pet is up do date on their 💉vaccines.
