It is supposed to be EXCEEDINGLY HOT for the next several days. Summer has finally arrived, which is wonderful, but also presents health and safety challenges for our furry friends.

-Make sure your pets have access to plenty of fresh water. Even indoor pets will need to increase fluids in this humidity.

-If your pets spend time outdoors, please make sure there is ample shade and fresh water.

-DO NOT leave your pets in the car--even for a minute. The temperature in an idle car rises surprisingly quickly.

-Be careful if walking your dogs that they aren't spending too much time on hot tar. If you'd be uncomfortable barefoot, they probably are, too.

If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them!

As we prepare for what experts are saying is the most frigid cold snap in a decade, we are reminding you to bring your pets inside. If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for them. Here are some tips for tumbling temps:

*Make sure your garage, barn, or shed door is cracked so outdoor or feral cats can find shelter.
*Build makeshift cat shelters out of cardboard boxes, line the bottom with straw, and cover the top of the box with heavy blankets or towels.
*If your dog must be outside for ANY length of time, please make sure they have a shelter built several inches off the ground, lined with straw, and that there is a heavy tarp or other cover at the entrance to block the wind.
*Please check and refill water sources regularly-they will freeze over.
*Staying warm requires more calories--please feed dogs and cats larger portions more often.

IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE WITH AN ANIMAL, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LOCAL ACO. IF IN DOUBT ABOUT AN ANIMAL'S WELFARE, CONTACT YOUR ACO!
