Today we had an excellent turnout as our doctors and staff attended the RECOVER workshop! This workshop provided our staff with the most up to date veterinary CPR strategies and techniques. In addition to participating in this workshop, those who attended were required to complete a six hour long online course prior to the event. Congratulations to our staff and doctors for completing this essential lifesaving workshop!

Halloween Pet Safety!!

ā€œCostumes and masks, lights and decorations, and a constant parade of strangers coming to your doorā€” Halloween can be a downright spooky experience for pets. You can protect your pets by taking these steps to reduce the risk of them being hurt, poisoned, or lost.ā€

This article from AVMA is a great place to learn, share, and practice safety for your pet during the October season.

Don't feed your pets Halloween candy, especially if it contains chocolate or xylitol (a common sugar substitute); Make sure your pet has proper ID...

Today was a wonderful turnout for our first k-9 blood donor program as we partnered with Blue Ridge Veterinary Blood Bank! Some of the dogs from today donated blood that will save the life of another familyā€™s heart and soul during a very critical time while other dogs from today had their first official meet and greet where a small sample of blood was pulled in order to properly determine their blood type among a series of other tests as mentioned in one of our video clips below. If you have been considering the idea of seeing if your k-9 is a good candidate for this life saving blood donor program, but you arenā€™t sure what to expect, we hope some of our short video clips and photos will answer a few of your questions! Every pet parent has the opportunity to choose if he or she would like to remain present for the entire process from start to finish. The process is also not rushed, but instead the team patiently and lovingly works at your petā€™s personal pace. In addition to taking things very slow and easy, restraint is not part of the equationā€¦ restraint is 100% replaced with a fear free method of nothing but hugs and cuddles with Chris while Dr. Latchford performs a blood draw. Today was full of so many doggy smiles, tail wags, hugs, snuggles, plenty of cheese wiz or peanut butter (depending on your preference for your pet), and lots of positivity in the air! Before a k-9 becomes an official donor, the team assesses your pet to be certain itā€™s not going to be a process that stresses your pet out. Your pupā€™s comfort level is the highest priority to the team when choosing donor candidates. If you have been considering enrolling your k-9 into this blood bank program, please review the flyer in this post and send any questions you might have directly to the email provided there. We cannot be more grateful for the wonderful pet owners and most importantly the k-9 blood donors. Right now, at this very moment, there are many families or pet owners across the county sitting at a veterinary clinic praying their beloved fur baby can be saved with the help of a transfusion and a solution to easing that heartache would not be possible if it werenā€™t for dogs and families like the ones you see in this post. The faces of the dogs you see below are the faces of heroes.

Please remain patient as our video clips upload.

Dr. Anna Katogiritis is one of our beloved relief veterinarians. She founded a wonderful international program designed to help make a difference in the lives of many animals all over the world. We hope youā€™ll take a moment to share this info to help support her incredible cause:

Veterinary Global Aid, Inc (VGA), is a 501c3 registered non profit based in Washington DC. VGA was founded by Dr. Anna Katogiritis with the goal of providing pro-bono veterinary care to animals in need internationally, while also empowering kids and youth to take positive action for the animals within their communities. Dr. Anna's volunteer work has been featured in numerous media outlets over the years, including CNN Travel and has awarded her the "40 under 40" philanthropic award by the Greek America Foundation. Having worked closely with Dr. Jane Goodall (DBE, UN Messenger of Peace), Dr. Anna believes that if we want to achieve a long lasting positive impact for the animals we must include youth in the process and inspire and empower them to take action as well. For this reason, VGA invests heavily its time and resources to educate youth during each of its international campaigns.

In addition, VGA provides training opportunities for veterinarians and consultations for complex veterinary cases, as the organization recognizes that not all veterinarians across the globe have access to specialty care. VGA strives to provide excellence of care to domestic and wild animals and for this reason all veterinarians and nurses who participate as volunteers are required to have a minimum 2 years experience and undergo interviews to assess their knowledge and comfort level.

All donations are tax deductible and any help is appreciated and needed!

It is SO important to keep your pets indoors as much as possible during these hot weather days. Short potty breaks are the way to go.

We know weā€™ve posted a lot about heat and hot weather over the last week but that is because heat stroke is one of the most common emergencies we see at this time of year. Almost every heat stroke patient who comes through our doors, is in critical condition by the time he or she arrives to us.

Please, we ask that you share this information. Taking a moment to share our posts with your friends and family you could save a petā€™s life.

ā€¼ļø IMPORTANTā€¼ļø

Some of the hottest days are among us.

This is an urgent reminder to all pet owners: Please keep your pets indoors as much as possible during the next few days as the heat index in most areas is expected to be over 100 degrees.

If you care for a cat colony or own barn cats it is CRUCIAL that they have access to fresh water and shaded shelter at all times!

It is best to please keep your pets indoors!

You can keep your petā€™s paws safe by avoiding walks on hot pavement. If possible, avoid walks altogether and choose short bathroom breaks as an alternative. During extreme hot weather, it is likely to still be too hot for regular walks even in early evenings. Unfortunately, heat stroke is one of the most common emergencies we treat on these hot days. Almost every heat stroke patient arrives to us in critical condition.

ALSO, IT IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE TO LEAVE YOUR PET INSIDE A HOT VEHICLE DURING THESE HOT SUMMER MONTHS!

Stay safe and stay cool! Our doors are always open and we are always here for your pets should you have an emergency.

You can save a life just by sharing this post with your friends and family. Share away!
