Is a Border Collie suitable for you?

Before you consider bringing a Border Collie into your home, because you fell in love with them, saw them please reach out to us. You should read our Buyers or Breeders Guide.

If you can meet and talk with people who currently own Border Collies and are familiar with their needs please do so. Please be well informed about the border collie breed and its needs. They a herding breed and need a job to do. If you dont stimulate them they find a job you might not like - digging up your irrigation system, herding the kids, destroying things and show behavioural problems.

We understand a rescue dog is not for everyone but please dont support backyard greeding with no care for the welfare of the pups or adult dogs. If it does not feel right walk away. A bargain a cheap pup or adult dog can lead to a lot of heartache

If you decide to get a purebreed puppy, you will need to find a reputable ethical breeder. It is important that a breeder answers all you question honestly, showns you the parents and can provide health testing of the dam and sire and all vaccinations etc are done. Often they have a waiting list as well to ensure their line only goes to an approved home.

If you get a puppy invest in your and your dogs relationship attend puppy school and obiedience training set a foundation for a lifelong relationship. If you dont train them dont blame them.

If you want to give a rescue dog a second chance we here to guide you. Adoption process & T&C's apply. We have Border Collies of all ages and if you cant keep up with the demands of these young dashing dynamics consider to give a golden retirement home to one of our oldies, they have so much love to give. Or look at one of our collie crosses they deserving too.

Border Collies are highly intelligent and very active dogs. They need a job to do. They do well in agility, dancing with dogs, flyball, trick dogs, dog yoga, your running buddy and of course herding sheep which is was they where breed for. While the level of intensity varies, the breed might be too energetic for your lifestyle.

Failure to research the breed and its needs resulted in us rehoming 532 Border Collies last year.

So please dont choose a dog based on looks alone just because you saw them somewhere. Paw please do your homework and help us to reduce the number of unwanted collies coming into rescue in the future.

I have no words. I thought the words would come when I sat down to write this post, but I was wrong.

We know what took Ten, but we don't know why. These things are so rare and the triggering event so poorly understood, it really comes down to freak chance. Ten wasn't always an easy dog, but she loved her sheep work more than anything else, and it was thanks to the care and love of Elsie Jammy that Ten and I were able to experience a whole new way of communicating. I feel robbed of the experiences we could have had together, of the things I'm sure she still had to teach me. I was not ready. I'm still not ready.

But no matter how much more time we could have or should have had, at least we had what we had, and I have been reminded to be grateful for that too.

On the 14th December Mythic brought us 5 beautiful healthy puppies, three girls and two boys. They grew and developed beautifully... but when eyes and ears opened I noticed there was something wrong with two of the girls - Dana and Virya.

As the other pups developed their balance, coordination and vision, Dana and Virya circled, and fell over, and got lost and unable to find their way.
With the help of every specialist and friend and expert at my disposal we tried and tested and treated everything we could think of. Eventually we made the terrible, heart-breaking decision to sacrifice one puppy, to try to save the other. But it was not to be. Even autopsy and histopathology held no answers for us, and today we made the hard call to let go.

I have a long list of what didn't cause this. And I have three healthy, happy puppies who, experts agree, will not develop this issue later on, as they have passed the developmental period for balance, sight and co-ordination, which Dana and Virya could not. But I don't have enough answers, and right now I feel like I don't have enough tears.

This litter was already decided to be the last Askenhill litter for the time being. We started breeding with a vision to bring excellent sporting and working lines into the country, and make them more readily available for the South African canine disciplines community. I feel that we have been part of achieving that, along with a bunch of other excellent kennels doing their part to uplift our sporting lines in this country.

I will breed again - when I am ready to add to my own family. But for now, I feel the locally available lines we now have access to fulfill the dream I had when this started. So - for now - we rest.
