This is a Pacific Black Duckling, he was bought into the clinic for a vet check as he was found separated from his mum and fellow siblings. Dr Laura gave him a thorough check over and it was decided due to his age he would be sent to the RSPCA for ongoing care until he was old enough to be released back into the wild.

This gorgeous bird is a Welcome Swallow. It would be one of the smallest birds we have seen in a while. An adult Swallow can get to a whopping 9-20grams (so small 🥺)!!! This little lady found her way to us after being found on the ground, unable to fly. She got the all clear from Dr Briar and was sent to the RSPCA for some ongoing care until she was ready to be released.

Ruby came in today for her second puppy vaccination and nurse Jade made sure she was brave for her needle with lots of cuddles 😍🐶

It is very important puppies receive their full course of vaccinations (3 in total) so they don’t pick up any scary diseases out in the world. Ruby will be back in 1 month for her final vaccine and after that she can go and show herself off to the world!

We are very excited to Welcome Dr Laura to our team!

Dr Laura is one of our new part time Veterinarians who has joined us in early February. She graduated from the University of Queensland in 2023 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, she has always had a very strong passion for helping animals. She has an interest in surgery and has a special place in her heart for our feline friends. 🐱

Laura moved from Canada to Australia (with her beautiful cat Taz) to pursue her dream of becoming a Veterinarian. When not at work she loves to be active outdoors, enjoys going camping and spending quality time with her friends and of course her feline companion, Taz (pictured).

🔥🥵Would you know the signs of HEATSTROKE???
As temperatures climb☀️, there are a few important things to remember when taking care of our pets this summer! 🐱🐶

Here’s our TOP TIPS to keep your pets cool as a cucumber 😎 while the weather outside is SPICY🔥🌶:
💧🫗STAY HYDRATED -Keep your fur-babies water bowls filled with cold fresh water. You can even add in some ice-cubes! 🧊🧊
🐾HOT PUP PAWS - Pets have sensitive paw pads that can burn easily, if you can’t keep your palm ✋ on the ground for more than 10 seconds, IT’S TOO HOT TO WALK! Consider walking in the early mornings or just before bed & avoid the hot pavement.
🚗💥DO NOT LEAVE ME IN THE CAR - even with the windows cracked, it can take less than 10 mins for temps to soar sky high!! 🌡 Never leave your pet in the car.
😎🌊STAY COOL - Invest in small paddling or wading pools for pets to cool down in during the day

⁉️BUT HOW DO I KNOW IF MY PET IS SUFFERING IN THE HEAT?
Look for the signs:
⚠️Heavy panting & drooling
⚠️Racing heart
⚠️Vomiting & diarrhoea
⚠️Sluggish & lethargic behaviour
⚠️Bright Red tongue
‼️Contact the vet immediately if your pet is lethargic, relentlessly panting, drooling, vomiting or collapsing 🚨

This week we say goodbye to Ellie, our long-term stylist, as she moves into a new role working with the RSPCA!

"The last 4 years at Capalaba Vet have been wonderful! I feel so truly blessed to have been trusted by so many fur-parents & work alongside some of the very best in the animal industry! Thank you to all my wonderful clients for your support & friendship over my 4 years here. I love your furry family members as if they are my own & I have had many tearful cuddles with them during their last grooms with me!"

We wish her all the best in this new & exciting adventure & thank her for all her amazing haircuts!

☀️Summer days are heating up! Don't forget your dog's sensitive feet as you protect your own🐶

✋If you can't leave the back of your hand on the pavement for more than 5 seconds then it's too hot for your pooch.

It's not just the road you need to check, if you're walking along the beach you need to check the sand too. Never walk in the middle of the day, focus on early morning or later afternoon walks.

Spring means BABY BIRDS! 🌸🐣🌸
It's common this time of year to find baby birds that have fallen out of the nest. Quite often the parents will still be looking after the baby and by picking the baby bird up and removing it from the area, you are more likely to break their bond with the parent and reduce their chances of survival. If you find a baby bird on the ground, check it over and take it to a vet if it is injured. If it appears healthy, then try to place it somewhere high enough away from predators and in a warm, sheltered area so that it won’t fall again and so the parents can come and feed it. You may even be able to construct a temporary nest for it or a bird bucket.
