Meet one of our Hospital favourites Kayla.
Kayla is one of our outstanding Animal Attendants here at GVH.

Kayla is currently studying her Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing after obtaining her Cert III in Animal Studies with additional training in animal handling skills.

Kayla previously worked in a high demanding animal shelter/pound for a few years, looking after up to 200 cats and 60 dogs at capacity.

She also has extensive experience caring for neonate kittens as young as a day old and native wildlife, especially kangaroos and possums.

Kayla has a passion for working with animals who are considered aggressive and dangerous, and giving them the necessary attention and time to overcome their fear of people so they can be adopted and find their forever family.

She is the proud mum to three cats; Deakin & cooper - brothers who she raised from birth and the newest addition Lilo who Kayla also rescued as a kitten.

Kayla’s dream is to work as a cat behaviouralist and one day open her own cat sanctuary where she will be able to give all cats a chance to find a forever home and embrace their lives as lap cats 💛

This is the gorgeous Barney.

Barney was referred to our internal medicine department here at GVH for an investigation of urinary incontinence.
Barney was only 13 weeks old when he saw Dr. Hannah as he was dribbling urine when he was both awake and asleep. Understandably, this was causing some big issues for his owner.

He had a CT scan performed with our imaging and anaesthesia departments which showed that he had a severely enlarged kidney (it had become so swollen due to backed up urine) and an ectopic ureter (Barney’s ureter did not connect to his bladder, but rather to his urethra causing the leakage of urine).

Unfortunately, because of the damage caused to Barney’s kidney, the best option for Barney was to be referred to our surgical team for removal of his kidney and abnormal ureter. Luckily, Barney’s other kidney and ureter appeared to be relatively normal, so his long-term prognosis was good.

Dr. Tesh successfully performed the surgery and Barney was transferred to our emergency department for ongoing care and monitoring. Over the course of his stay, Barney’s urinary continence improved dramatically, and he was able to be sent home!

We received a lovely update from Barney’s owner recently to tell us that Barney’s surgery has been successful, and they had lovely thankyous to every department involved in Barneys hospital stay!

He is a dry puppy now, living his best life.

Meet Linda, one of our fantastic client services team members assisting our clients with all their needs.

Greencross Vet Hospital is Linda’s introduction to the veterinary world, having been an upper primary school teacher, small business owner, earring maker, and retail manager, before starting at GVH early last year.

Linda’s kindness and compassion makes her an outstanding addition to our client services team, and we are so appreciative to have her!

This is beautiful Oscar,

Oscar was referred to our clinic by the team at Greencross Macedon Ranges as a newly diagnosed diabetic.

Oscar’s diabetes was so severe at time of presentation that he was in a disease state called Diabetic Ketoacidosis. In this condition, diabetic patients have such dangerous electrolyte, blood glucose and blood pH derangements that it can be life-threatening.

During his stay in hospital, Oscar’s care was overseen by our critical care clinicians, Dr Tim Conolly (MANZCVS) and Dr Liam Donaldson (MANZCVS, DipACVECC), with amazing support from our intensive care nurses. In addition to Oscar’s diabetes, he was also diagnosed with pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) on abdominal ultrasound. This, in addition to his previously known diagnosis of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone in the blood), made Oscar a challenging case to manage.

Despite having many underlying comorbidities that made managing his diabetes difficult, Oscar was stabalized in our intensive care ward over the period of several days. His blood glucose and electrolyte abnormalities, thyroid hormone levels and pancreatitis were meticulously managed by our critical care nurses and veterinarians. Oscar had a feeding tube placed to allow adequate nutrition, and was eventually discharged home on twice-daily injectable insulin, along with medications for his hypothyroidism and pancreatitis.

Oscar was very brave in hospital, and despite having a guarded prognosis at admission to hospital, has recovered extremely well. We look forward to seeing this sweet man at his regular check-ups.

Massive thank-you to Oscar’s loving family and the amazing team at for letting us look after your beautiful man!

Meet Dr. Tim Conolly, one of our Emergency Vets here at GVH.

Tim Graduated from Murdoch University in WA in 2014 and moved to Melbourne to undertake an internship in emergency and critical care. He has since worked as an emergency and critical care vet in Melbourne honing his skills in the field.

Last year, he passed his membership exams in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care before joining the GVH team.

Growing up, Tim’s love for his dogs drew him to a career in veterinary medicine. Tim enjoys managing critical cases. His methodical approach and sense of humour are key to successfully navigating the challenges of his role.

At home, Tim is the proud Dad to Oscar the Wolfhound and Ned the Greyhound both of whom he loves very much. Tim enjoys road trips, walks in nature, photography and most of all, skiing.

We love having Tim as a part of our team!

Meet Beautiful Millie!

Millie presented to Greencross Vet Hospital for a three day history of a reduced appetite. When she was assessed by our General Practice team, it was noted she had a very high temperature and abdominal pain. Millie was transferred to our emergency department for ongoing care and diagnostics.

An ultrasound was performed of Millie that revealed she had an abscess associated with her right kidney, and as a result, bacteria free within her abdominal cavity. This is a condition called "septic peritonitis" and carries a guarded prognosis, even with gold standard care.

Millie was rushed into surgery where our surgeon, Dr Tesh Smalle, removed Millie's right kidney and ureter (a procedure called a "ureteronephrectomy"). Millie had her abdominal cavity flushed with sterile saline, and had two abdominal drains placed, along with a central venous catheter (a catheter that goes into the jugular vein), and an oesophageal feeding tube. Millie's central venous catheter, feeding tube and post-operative care were performed by our ECC specialist, Dr Liam Donaldson.

While in the initial 24-hours it was touch-and-go for beautiful Millie, she was extremely brave and stoic. In the days that followed Millie gradually felt better, and within three days of surgery, was already eating and keen to go for walks!

Millie was discharged from hospital four days after her surgery to recover at home. She's done exceedingly well considering the odds were against her, and has quickly become part of the GVH family.

We love you Millie!💛

Meet Daphne, a 3 year old Dachshund who recently had spinal surgery here at GVH.

Daphne presented with a sudden onset of hind limb paresis (difficulty walking). She was taken under the care of one of our neurologists, Dr Alex.

After having a CT scan, Alex performed a hemilaminectomy (spinal surgery to remove disc material).

Daphne has since been discharged from hospital and is doing really well. She’s giving plenty of tail wags for her lovely family. Help us wish Daphne well on the rest of her recovery ❀‍đŸ©č

Life saving wins! Coco’s story ✹

Coco is a sweet Ragdoll that presented to the emergency team at GVH at University of Melbourne for sudden onset vomiting and abdominal pain. Diagnostics on admission revealed that Coco had ruptured her caecum, resulting in f***l contents filtering into her abdomen (septic peritonitis). Pets with septic peritonitis carry a 50% mortality rate even with gold-standard surgical and medical intervention.
Coco was rushed to surgery with the GVH Surgery department and had to have a large portion of her small intestine, caecum, and large intestine removed. At the time of recovery, Coco passed away, with her heart stopping.

After CPR by our Specialist anaesthesia team, Coco was able to be resuscitated. After several days in our Intensive Care ward, cared for by our specialist Critical Care team, Coco was able to be discharged home. Coco has used up a few of her lives, but we are so happy that she had the spirit to fight on, despite the odds being against her. We love you Coco!

Life Saving Wins! 💚

Sammy is a beautiful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that presented as an emergency referral to GVH at University of Melbourne from the wonderful team at Greencross Macedon Ranges for suspected rat bait toxicity. Left untreated, pets that eat rat bait run the risk of internal bleeding that can result in death. At time of presentation Sammy was in severe respiratory distress secondary to bleeding into the space between his lungs and his chest wall (pleural space).

Sammy was treated with Vitamin K, as well as a blood and plasma transfusion. He had emergency drainage of the blood that had built up in his chest (pictured) to relieve his respiratory distress and was also treated with intranasal oxygen therapy. After 48-hours in our Intensive Care ward Sammy was able to be discharged home to his loving family.
