Early signs of spring are in the air. We’ve had a busy week at Fox Valley animal Hospital. One of the many lovely stories from this week is this beautiful kookaburra that was brought in by two kind ladies as it had been left on the side of the road after being hit by a car.
We gave it some treatment and after some rest and recuperation we were able to release it and it flew away beautifully as if nothing had happened! A wonderful end to our week 😊 🌿πŸͺΆ
Wishing everyone a great weekend!

How cute is this beautiful girl in her Buster Body Suit! πŸΎπŸ’•

This adorable body suit is an alternative to the commonly used Elizabethan Collar (aka the cone). Body suits can be a great solution for patients recovering from surgery/minor injuries or that may have tender areas caused by excessive licking, biting or chewing who will either not tolerate or are unable to use an E-Collar. 🐱🐢🐾

❌❌ TICKS ❌❌
Although spring/summer is considered tick season, our pets can still get paralysis ticks in winter. This morning we removed this adult Ixodes Holocyclus, the tick species responsible for paralysis, from a local cat. This is not the first tick we have seen recently and we urge all pet owners to remain vigilant and protect their pets year round.

Paralysis ticks can be deadly to our beloved pets. Paralysis tick symptoms are most commonly:
πŸ”Ή Change in bark or meow
πŸ”Ή Wobbly back legs
πŸ”Ή Trouble breathing
πŸ”Ή Loss of appetite
πŸ”Ή Coughing, retching or vomiting
πŸ”Ή Excessive salivation
If you notice these symptoms or you find a tick on your pet you should call your vet immediately.

The best way to prevent tick paralysis is to keep up to date with an effective preventative.

If you are unsure of what product is best or you don't know when you pets last treatment was, come and see us and we will get you back up to speed and your pet protected!

Fun fact: cats have 30 teeth, while dogs can have up to 42. That's a lot of chompers to take care of! 🦷 Ever tried PlaqueOff Powder?
This easy-to-use product helps reduce plaque, tartar and bad breath in your dog or cat. Better yet, it’s 100% natural, made from sustainably harvested Norwegian seaweed. 🌱
PlaqueOff is perfect for pets who won't chew or tolerate brushing, because you only need to sprinkle a tiny amount of the powder on their food once a day. 🐱🐢🐾

Chocolate is in abundance this time of year – but this sweet treat can be dangerous for your furry family member 🐾🍫
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which can be harmful to dogs if ingested - the darker the chocolate (ie. 99% cocoa), the more toxic. The symptoms of toxicity from chocolate include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Hyperactivity
- Tremors
- Seizures
- Racing heart rhythm progressing to abnormal rhythms
- Death in severe cases
If your dog has eaten chocolate, it is important to contact (us/the emergency centre)
straight away, with information on hand about the type of chocolate and the amount
consumed. If your dog has eaten a toxic dose, they may need treatment to get the
chocolate out of their system!

PSA: High Temperatures/Heat Stroke
With very high temperatures predicted in the next few days we encourage all owners to take steps to keep their pets safe from heat stroke. Check out this great info graphic from RSPCA NSW to learn more about how to protect your furry friends and what symptoms to watch for.

Interesting Fact: Did you know that dogs can only sweat to a minor degree from their paw pads? 🐾 This means they can have more trouble tolerating high temperatures and are more at risk of developing heat stroke.
