Finnley may have been watching too many Olympic gymnastics and decided to try it out himself. Unfortunately it was a very tricky landing that resulted in multiple fractures in his toes!

After having x-rays done and detailed a discussion with a team of vets, Finnley is on his road to recovery with a splint and bandages for the next 6 weeks before he will be re-x-rayed to see how much his toes have healed. No more advanced tricks for Finnley now!

How long does it take for my pet to recover from an anaesthetic?

Unlike us, pets cannot foresee their upcoming surgeries and often wake up confused and can look worried or lost over the next 24-hour period whilst their bodies metabolise the general anaesthetics and drugs. Be sure to offer them some extra TLCs during this time so they feel more at ease. However, paediatric or young patients after a quick procedure e.g. desexing or quick dental scale and polish can appear to be back on their feet in no time like nothing has happened!

Some symptoms you can look out for during the recovery phase are:
🩺Panting/restlessness
It is common for pets to be experiencing various levels of discomfort, physically or mentally, after an operation. They may find it difficult to get comfortable or can feel anxious after having a long day. Most pets go home with pain relief medications but if your pet seems extra painfu/unsettled, please let us know and we will look in to a stronger pain relieves or a recheck.

🩺Inappetence/nausea
Many pets feel nauseous and don't want to eat after an anaesthetic, especially during the first 12 hours, and some may vomit after eating. If that's the case, it’s okay to give them some extra time to develop their appetite, and we strongly recommend your pets to be monitored whilst eating for the first day. Appetite should improve by the following day.

🩺Less or abnormal bowel movements
Prolonged fasting period and reduced metabolic rates can cause your pets to not defecate for longer than usual, whereas some have more frequent bowel movements including loose stools or even diarrhoea. If your pet is having loose stools, please let us know. Urination should not be reduced and may even increase in the first 24 hours due to IV fluids they've received.

Even if your pets look very active and energetic right after their procedures, we ask that you still try to keep them as rested as possible to minimise risks of trauma to the surgical sites, infections and formation of hernias.

Please also let us know of any abnormal behaviours that last more than 48 hours.

Could your pets be dehydrated during winter?

Wintertime can be just as dehydrating as summer, as the cold air holds significantly less moisture than warm air. Added heat sources such as ovens, ACs and fireplaces also increase the risk of dehydration, especially for our feline friends as they can easily nap for hours in the warm cosiness.

You could be noticing signs such as increased thirst, itchy/flaky skin, tenting skin and dry/cracked nose as they rapidly lose moisture to the dry winter air if not keeping up with their water intake.

You can help to increase your pets’ water intake by making sure they have access to plenty of fresh water at all times, increase the amount of wet food given or even adding some water to their wet food, using a humidifier and turning down the temperature of heaters, or investing in a water fountain for your feline friends!

Has your pet been trying to tell you something lately as we move further into the cold temperature?

Arthritis is a painful joint disease that approximately 40% of cats and dogs will silently suffer with, that's 2 in 5 ratio!. This can affect their everyday movements, such as going up stairs, jumping up onto the bed or playing with their favourite toys.

Fortunately, here at SGV, we’re dedicated to improving the quality of life of you and your pets. We offer a variety of options such as oral supplements or long-acting pain relief injections and we're more than happy to help you find a solution to ease their pain.

Complete the online screener provided in the links below and visit us in clinic to find out if arthritis is the cause of your pets' pain.

Brothers Elvis and Dylan came in this week for their routine dental scale and polish while Dylan also underwent lumpectomy surgery to remove a couple of suspicious looking lumps their owner has found.

We encourage all owners to preform regular searches on your pets, and talk to your pets' groomers/walkers to maximise the chance of catching anything suspicious in the earliest stage possible! If you notice any new lumps or growths on your pet, make sure you get them checked out right away, especially if they are increasing in size over a short period of time. Lumps and bumps could be of benign or malignant nature and may arise as a result of infections, foreign bodies or cancers.

Is your pet protected against ticks even in the colder months?

Even if your pet has not been to any high-risk regions such as the coastal or bush/scrub areas and with the cool temperatures, ticks may still find their ways onto your furriends and pose serious threats if they are not on any preventions.

There are many effective products on the market such as Bravecto, NexGard Spectra and Simparica Trio that will protect your pets against ticks. They either come in the form of an oral tablet/chew, or a topical liquid to apply on the skin. Correct usage of tick preventatives and regular checks/searches through your pets' coats can effectively reduce the risk of tick paralysis, in any season!

Watch out for symptoms of tick paralysis:
🐾weakness/lethargy
🐾wobbly gait/collapse
🐾vomiting
🐾coughing or gagging
🐾changes in vocalisation
🐾difficulty breathing

We urge every pet parent to ensure their pet is up to date with tick prevention. If you need help with any preventative products, please feel free to give us a call on (02) 9588 2088.

Webbie was rescued by due to ectrodactyly affecting her right front paw. This is a congenital bone abnormality characterised by a soft tissue and boney split between metacarpal bones, and in Webbie's case, means she has a webbed foot! She was quickly adopted by an extremely loving family and visited SGV for her check up. She is definitely very well loved and thriving!

Meet Uggy - the fluffy French Bulldog!
Did you know that the gene responsible for determining hair length in French Bulldogs is called Fibroblast growth factor 5 (FGF5)? Its two recessive variants, L1 and L4, reduce the ability of the gene FGF5 from signalling hair follicles to stop hair growth, which means puppies must carry two copies of either variant, one copy from each parent, to have the "fluffy" appearance!
