Virtual Locum Support is our latest addition to Smart.Vet’s services. Since the launch of this service at the end of 2023, our staff have completed hundreds of virtual shifts for partner hospitals.🩺

The process is straightforward. A Smart.Vet veterinarian is available on video in the clinic exam room, where with the assistance of a physical technician, they are able to perform consultations in partner hospitals. All records are shared with the hospital, ensuring continuity of care.

Virtual Locum Support is Canada’s only virtual DVM relief service. It provides the perfect solution to balancing clinic workloads and supporting clinic staff while ensuring the continuation of high-quality care. 🐾

At Smart.Vet, we are able to see all types of emergent, urgent and non-urgent cases when the family veterinarian is unavailable. Nearly all of our cases come to us via referral from the family practice or a local emergency hospital.

Approximately 25% of our cases are referred by us to a hospital for immediate physical care. The other 75% are managed at home, with 70% of these requiring one or more prescriptions as part of their medical management.

Acute gastrointestinal issues and orthopedic/ musculoskeletal concerns are among the most common presenting complaints that we see.

We always advise follow-up with the family veterinarian and ensure that medical records are sent to the regular hospital within three hours of the consultation taking place.

Our skilled RVTs triage and facilitate transfers to local emergency hospitals when the patient is deemed critical, assist clients by taking histories scheduling appointments over the phone, help our veterinarians with prescriptions, medical records transfers, and client and clinic communications.

Most importantly, they are reliably available 24/7 to be a shoulder to lean on and to walk clients through the entire process.

A calm, friendly voice on the other end of the phone can make a huge difference to a stressed pet owner!

A large percentage of emergencies can be managed, at least temporarily, on an out-patient basis.

At Smart.Vet, we know that emergency hospitals are dealing with an exceptionally high volume of cases these days. We are here to support your emergency clinic to ensure that the overflow of non-emergent cases are still managed as efficiently as possible.

This gives the emergency hospital staff time to focus on the true emergencies that require immediate physical attention and close monitoring during hospitalization.

The end result is improved access to veterinary care for all patients, at the level required for the individual case.
