With the melting snow creating unusually wet conditions for this time of year, we are seeing more horses with rain rot. Commonly found with unblanketed horses that are not sheltered from rain, rain rot often develops underneath blankets that do not breath such as rain sheets, and the condition is exasperated if horses are sweating under a rain sheet. Though not painful if treated early, untreated rain rot can progress to red, raw and itchy skin and secondary infections requiring veterinary care. Rain rot is contagious through shared saddle pads, blankets and brushes - and can be spread to humans(wear gloves and wash hands after) - so it’s important to wash/disinfect any brushes/ pads/ blankets that have been in contact with rain rot.

In the initial stages, rain rot is easy to miss as it looks like wet, matted hair, then progresses to crusty scabs and if left untreated can develop yellow - green pus under the scabs. Most common locations for rain rot are the back, neck, face and chest, with white hair more susceptible.

Treatment :
-clip the hair around infected area
- gentle remove loose scabs and throw in garbage
- cleanse thoroughly with antibacterial shampoo formulated for rain rot or
- chlorhexidine, povidone- iodine, benzoyl peroxide scrub
- ideally after cleansing, apply medicated spray
- treatment can be repeated multiple times daily for the duration of condition

Arthritis creeps in as horses age, just like humans. Knowing how to support arthritic horses through changes in feed, weight management, supplements, farrier, exercise, veterinary care, and mediations can significantly improve their quality of life and extend their career.

Two authorities on older horse care share tips for conditioning horses with osteoarthritis.

Add salt !
Loose salt is a much better source of salt than relying on the blocks - just plain ol’ bulk table salt is cheap and easy. If you can’t give salt to your horse daily, then plan the time to give salt a few times a week or every time you come out. You can mix in with your beet pulp or add a bit of water to whatever feed you’re giving so the salt has something to stick to. Calgary’s ever changing weather / barometric pressure can really impact the amount of water horses drink, so salt is your friend if you are a colic adverse type of person

You can click on the link for the vet clinic's full list of comments, but here is the summary:
This is a carotid artery vs jugular vein stick! The stick on the left is brighter because it went into an artery (instead of a vein), and blood in an artery is oxygenated and is therefore brighter / lighter in colour. Medication that is injected into an artery will go directly to the brain often causing seizures and possibly death. The stick on the right was inserted into a vein, which has less oxygen so it's darker in colour. Easier to see the difference in colour when they are side by side, but much more difficult to identify without a comparison and requires an educated eye. Usually a vet will initially just insert sharp without the syringe first to see how much blood is produced; blood dripping out the sharp tells the vet that they have hit a vein, and blood squirting out indicates they have hit an artery.
The more you know ⭐️🌈....

You may wonder why we pull back into the syringe when giving injections in the vein. This picture explains why. We don't pull back to make sure we're in the vessel, we do it to make sure we're in the RIGHT vessel. Today I went to give an injection and pulled back and saw blood brighter than I wanted. I decided to go and get a new dose of sedation and once again pulled back and then gave my dose of sedation. The syringe on the left was my first injection and the syringe on the right was my second injection. Does anyone know why I shouldn't have injected that first syringe? And had I injected that first injection, what would have happened?

Dearest Riders,

Please let me remind you of something very important. Horse showing, riding and training are insanely difficult. If you have a crappy ride, a less than stellar show ring result (or if you made your trainer want to pull their hair out today), it just means there's more to learn. The people who had good rides today are not exempt from disappointing rides tomorrow. They also have bad days and, if they're very experienced riders, they've had a whole bunch of bad days.

There will always be someone out there on a more talented horse, someone with a bigger bank account, someone who never struggled to learn to sit the trot...life isn't fair. You probably can't win the lottery or grow 5 more inches of leg. You can, however, wake up every morning and be thankful that you're able to ride horses. Work hard at becoming the best rider you can be with the body and the bank account that you have right now. Work at being the rider your horse wants up there on his back. Your horse's opinion of your riding is more valuable than any judge's opinion could ever be.

Consistent hard work, dedication and commitment every day is the foundation to success. That means rolling up your sleeves and learning from all of the intricacies of riding and caring for horses. The yellow brick road is filled with trials and tribulations that combined, make this horse journey a never ending path of learning.
I’m so proud to have been a part of the journey for Kveder Equestrian. She made a plan many years ago and did all the hard work to make it a reality.

Life can be a bit grey sometimes …. so a grey horse always fits right in.

I love the transition of colour of grey horses through their life. The dark greys are young and always learning, and the white horses are older and wise with experience.

I can totally understand how a person could not be sure if a bone broke or not where it's supposed to be...and you just never get it checked out. It happens. 💁‍♀️"Once you get on the horses, you just kinda forget about all that". So true.
