Too Hot To Trot around town!
With the high temperatures this week we wanted to share some tips on how to avoid burnt paws!
- Change the time of your walks ie early morning or later evening. Avoid mid afternoon
- Try to walk your dog on the grass vs concrete or asphalt
- Invest in a good pair of booties
- When in doubt test it out! Use the back of your hand to the test the concrete or asphalt by holding the back of your hand to the ground for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you it’s too hot for them!

Mental Health Awareness Month allows us all to highlight a subject that should be part of the conversation year-round. It is an opportunity to remind ourselves that good mental health is as important to our well-being as taking care of our physical selves. Recognizing this, Blue Cross has put up this colouring poster as a gentle prompt for our team to take time to decompress and shift focus, if only for a moment. It is a small gesture to serve as a reminder that we are here to support each other. Swipe to see what our team has accomplished so far 💜

Two weeks ago we introduced you to Bolt, a cross-country athlete who was slowed down by a muscle injury that was threatening to end his racing days and limit his regular movement. After consulting with our CCRT certified vet, Dr. Ciggaar, Bolt began physio and laser therapy treatments in July with skilled-technician, Natalie. Laser therapy uses light wavelengths as a non-invasive, pain-free tool to aid in the healing of injuries and in relieving chronic pain with no side-effects. With the inclusion of physio and laser therapies in Bolt’s rehabilitation, he was back to his self by November and able to travel to Spain where he successfully competed in the IFSS World Championships! We were so pleased to see the joy in Bolt’s face as he does what he loves. If your pet is experiencing pain from an acute injury or a chronic condition, ask us if they may benefit from including laser therapy in their management plan.

This week is Vet Receptionist Appreciation Week. And Blue Cross has a LOT to be appreciative of. Nateesha, Jen, Natalie, Kelly, and Jackie are the friendly faces that greet you and your pets as you arrive or give us a call. They organize appointment times, keep records straight, lend an ear or a shoulder when needed, keep the team on task, source out answers to all sorts of inquiries, put our patients and their people at ease. The list goes on and on… We could not do what we do without them and so we take this opportunity to say a great big thank you to our amazing reception team!

Meet our friend Bolt. He is a 5-year-old Siberian Husky and Canicross athlete. Bolt is a happy, energetic boy who has competed in numerous cross-country events with his owners and fur-siblings. Last June, Bolt suffered from Iliopsoas myositis, a hip muscle injury commonly seen in athletes. It prohibited Bolt’s regular movement and high-level of activity. Bolt’s owners worked closely with Blue Cross’ Dr. Ciggaar to develop a plan that would get Bolt back to doing all his favourite activities. Stay tuned to hear what was next in store for Bolt and to learn more about what Blue Cross can offer for chronic pain management and injury rehabilitation...

While this weather may have us wondering if winter is on its way in or out, we can be sure these inconsistent temperatures increase the possibility of tick activity. Recent research has suggested that ticks infected with lyme-causing pathogens are, in fact, more resilient to our colder Canadian climate. Meaning every season is now tick season. Now is the time to talk to your veterinarian about how the right tick prevention product can help protect you and your pets from tick- borne disease.

As dental awareness month winds to an end, we wanted to remind everyone that caring for your pet’s dental health is always something to be considered. Dental care is an integral part of their well-being and vitality. Even if your pet is not showing signs of oral health problems, such as bad breath or difficulties chewing, having their teeth checked regularly can prevent future complications and unnecessary discomfort. Ask your veterinarian what steps can be taken to maintain or improve your pet’s oral health.

So much of what veterinary technicians do is behind the scenes. You may not realize just how many roles they play. As we near the end of Vet Tech Appreciation Week, Blue Coss wanted to shed some light on just some of what teching involves. Vet techs are anesthesiologists, x-ray technologists, dental hygenists, pharmacists, educators, physical therapists, nurses, surgical assistants, researchers, and counselors. We thank our techs for all this and so much more.
