Our next brave patient is Rocco! Rocco was a brave boy who was rescued through Grateful Friends Animal Rescue, whom had to have his hind leg amputated due to an unknown injury/severe arthritis.

Well Rocco came back to our clinic in January to help save other dogs in need. He came to donate his blood. During routine testing done through the Canadian Animal Bloodbank, his heartworm/tick screening test came back positive for heartworm disease. After some more specific testing, Rocco was diagnosed with an active heartworm infection.

Rocco started his first immiticide treatment to slowly kill the adult worms infecting his heart, and will get another 2 treatments spaced 30 days apart. He is to remain calm and relaxed, to make sure his heart isn't overworked during this stressful time, while he undergoes treatment for the next three months (probably the hardest part of all of this for him)

Wishing Rocco a speedy recovery! Here's another advantage of donating blood (routine 4dx testing for free) which ultimately helped us diagnose Rocco early, which is vital to successful treatment, and a friendly reminder to give your tick/heartworm medications as prescribed.

We had the bravest girl in for surgery yesterday. This girl had the largest bladder stones we've ever seen! She needed surgical removal of the stones (uroliths) and is now doing quite well.

Depending on the composition of the urinary stones, there are veterinary diets to help prevent and break down the formation of them. Obviously at this point they were already too large for that.

The video in the comments shows you more "normal" sized bladder stones (on the left) compared to her abnormally large uroliths (on the right).

It's time to start your tick prevention! Might seem odd with some snow still on the ground, but as depicted in the last photo, there were many months of tick activity from Dec, Jan and February.

Ticks start to become active once temperatures start to rise to 0°C

If your pet's annual exam is due in April, May or June, beat the heartworm/tick season rush by booking your appt in the next 3 weeks and you'll get 25% off your exam and 25% off your 4dx (heartworm/tick screening test).

(Other pets whose annuals aren't due soon are entitled to the 25% off 4dx test)

We recommend early 4dx testing to screen for many Tick Bourne Diseases and Heartworm. Sometimes being on prevention isn't enough with tick spread illnesses, so staying on top of screening is vital to your pets health.

With the warm weather this year, it is recommended you pick up tick prevention starting March 1st!
