🐱🐶⚠️ Did you know that cats and dogs only sweat through their paws? This makes them prone to overheating.
With rising summer temperatures, here are a few tips to keep your four-legged friends safe:
🚗 Never leave your pet in a vehicle – it can heat up quickly and create life-threatening situations in minutes.
💧 If your pet is outside, ensure they have plenty of shade and fresh water. Add water to their food or make pet-safe frozen treats to keep them hydrated.
🏃♀️ On extremely hot days, limit outdoor exercise for your pets.
🐾 Paws are sensitive to heat – they can burn on hot pavement. If it's too hot for you to touch, it's too hot for your pet.
🥵 Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke in dogs, such as excessive panting, drooling, red/gray/purple/blue gums, a rapid pulse, excessive thirst, disorientation, and/or vomiting. Move them to a cool, shaded area immediately, provide water, and contact your veterinary care provider if you notice these signs.
🧊 Provide an elevated cot or damp towels for your pets to lie on, which helps regulate their body temperature.
