Drum roll, please... 🥁 We are thrilled to announce our Vets Now Pet of the Year award runners-up. Our second 2024 runner-up is Wilbur. 🐶

Wilbur has transformed his owner Lucy’s life after being paired with him two years ago. A rare form of vasculitis, Granulomatosis with Polyangitis (GPA), robbed Lucy of her hearing at the age of 17 and left her too scared to go out alone but Wilbur has given her the confidence to get back out into the world. 💙 StreetVet

A blood transfusion from a cat abandoned in a dog waste bin has saved the life of a kitten left at death's door by an infestation of fleas. 😰

11-month-old Persian cat Bertie (white) needed an immediate blood transfusion after being rushed to our Vets Now clinic in Gillingham.

With no stored supplies of cat blood available, a live transfusion was the only option. Our dedicated nurse, who had previously adopted Mr Hankey (black cat) when he was found abandoned, rushed home to bring him in for donation. Thankfully, his blood was a match! 🥰

A few weeks ago, Honey came to our Vets Now Belfast clinic as she was experiencing some abdominal pain. 😰

After thorough investigations, Honey underwent surgery to remove a portion of her bowel after it had perforated. Turns out, the culprit behind her abdominal pain was a sneaky squeaker toy she had swallowed, maybe some time ago! 😱 After a successful procedure to remove the toy, Honey's been bouncing back, and we're so glad to have helped her. 🙌❤️

Meet handsome Murphy! 🐾

Our Manchester Hospital team first met him at the age of two, when the cardiology team diagnosed him with a congenital heart condition. Despite facing challenges, including emergency chest surgery and later a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease, Murphy's resilience shines through.

Now, at seven years old, he's always thrilled to see them during his visits as much as they love to see him. 💖 Nothing can dampen Murphy's spirit; he's an absolute superstar and a much-loved visitor to the hospital.

Did you know that some fruits can be a refreshing treat for your dog on warmer days? 🍓🍌✨

Dogs can enjoy some fruits, but others are highly toxic to our furry friends, including grapes. Here are a few tasty fruits dogs can have in moderation. 🐶

Meet this gorgeous goose who was brought into our Vets Now Pet Emergency Hospital Glasgow by the SSPCA recently after being shot with a crossbow. 😢 With the skilled assistance of our out-of-hours team, Nicole, our lead out-of-hours vet, successfully removed the arrow in a highly tricky procedure, including safely anaesthetising the brave bird.

Thanks to their expertise and dedication, the goose has made an astounding recovery and has been happily discharged into SSPCA's care, which has launched inquiries with the police to find out how this happened.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Nicole and our fantastic team, including Nicola, pictured here, for their unwavering commitment to saving lives. ❤️

Poor Appa was discovered on the roadside, fighting for breath with a fractured pelvis, hip, and femur, alongside severe nerve damage. Tragically, this occurred just as he was settling into a loving new home with Adam, who had kindly adopted him. 🥺

Adam rushed to our Vets Now Pet Emergency Hospital Manchester, where Appa underwent urgent surgery, including the insertion of a metal plate to mend his crushed pelvis. Despite efforts, his left hind leg couldn't be saved, but that hasn't stopped Appa. To everyone's surprise, he is back running and climbing as fast on three legs as he did on four! 🐱

Check out these dog-friendly veggies, which are safe and packed with essential nutrients. They can be enjoyed as an occasional treat, perfectly complementing your furry friend's balanced diet. ❤️

Here's how to prepare them safely 🐾

1️⃣ Wash thoroughly️!
2️⃣ Cut into bite-sized pieces, making it easier for your pet to digest.
3️⃣ Cook when necessary. While veggies like peppers are fine raw, others, such as beets and squash, should be cooked to improve digestibility.
4️⃣ Avoid seasoning; plain and simple is best!

Many may not know, but pets have unique blood types, just like humans 🩸 At Vets Now Belfast, we've been working closely with the Pet Blood Bank UK to provide life-saving transfusions for our furry patients. Whether it's whole blood, red blood cells, or plasma, these transfusions can be critical for pets recovering from trauma, anaemia, rat bait ingestion, and more.

We're proud to offer transfusions for our patients and supply blood to local practices in need. 🏥👏

A massive shout out to all the generous pet donors supporting the Pet Blood Bank and similar organisations, making it possible to save lives across the UK ❤️

We had a bit of an unusual patient in our clinic last Sunday 🐓

This lovely chicken lady is Sussie, who was unfortunately attacked by a fox at her home. Her owner found her hiding in a hedgerow 3 hours later and rushed her down to us in the clinic. Our lovely vet Lara Wilson gave her some much-needed pain relief and antibiotics. She then got to work cleaning and flushing Sussie's wounds - and fashioning the most impressive dressing!

Thankfully, Sussie could return home to her flock of 5 that evening with her owner Rob ❤️🥰

Meet Daisy, the much-loved cocker spaniel who nearly lost her life after eating soil from her garden. 😢

Daisy's owner, Stuart and his family are keen for other owners to be aware of tremorgenic mycotoxin intoxication. This deadly syndrome so nearly claimed Daisy's life and can be triggered by eating just a small amount of perfectly innocent-looking soil.

Our Principal Vet Sasha explains: "This condition is incredibly aggressive, and every minute really does matter. Signs to look out for here include hyperthermia (high temperature), salivation, vomiting, ataxia (the appearance of drunkenness when walking), rapid heart rate, muscle tremors and seizures."

Thanks to quick thinking from her owner and the emergency care from our team, Daisy has made a full recovery 🌼 and we're so glad to see her back at home enjoying time with her family. 💞

It's easy for our pets to overheat in the warmer weather, as unlike us, they can't tolerate higher temperatures because they only have sweat glands in their feet and around their nose. 🥵

Our emergency vets see hundreds of cases of heatstroke in pets yearly; tragically, many of these prove to be fatal.

Here are some signs to look out for, and always consult your vet or your nearest Vets Now clinic if you believe your pet is suffering from heatstroke. 🚨

The sun is shining in many parts of the UK and many of us will be looking forward to making the most of it over the next few days ☀️🧡

Unfortunately, high temperatures can be fatal to our dogs so it's really important to be aware of when they are at risk. Our handy guide shows when temperatures are safe for your dog to go outside. Remember, always walk your dog in the cooler parts of the day, such as first thing in the morning and later on in the evening.

Please share this information with other owners to help keep our pets safe and happy. 🐾

Have you ever heard of Blue-Green Algae? 🤔💦 Chloe, one of our Vet Nurses, explains:

'Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) typically forms on slow-moving and stagnant waterways, such as ponds, streams and reservoirs, in the Summer. While not all Blue-Green Algae is toxic to dogs, many unfortunately are and will require quick veterinary intervention to avoid long-term liver damage and fatalities.

Common signs to be aware of after ingesting Blue-Green Algae, often seen in minutes to hours, include vomiting, diarrhoea, breathing difficulty and neurological symptoms such as lethargy, disorientation, weakness and even seizures.

If you think your pet has ingested Blue-Green Algae contact your local veterinary practice or nearest Vets Now clinic for urgent advice; our nurses are on hand each night, weekend and bank holiday to provide advice and initial assessment as typically, these things are the most common while we enjoy the better weather and our pooches take a dip to cool down!'

Sweet Loki was in terrible pain after suddenly becoming ill with a condition known officially as gastric dilatation and volvulus syndrome. 🤒

Laura, Loki's owner, had noticed him panting, seeming agitated and trying but failing to be sick; that's when she recognised his symptoms and knew she had to get him to our Vets Now Belfast clinic as soon as possible.

Led by Principal Vet Sasha, our team here at Belfast immediately worked on Loki. She said: 'Loki's heart was racing. His pulse was weak. He was really struggling and in so much pain. Very sadly, this syndrome is so dangerous that it's not uncommon for a dog to be dead on arrival for treatment'.

Laura's quick thinking and our team's quick assessment and action meant that Loki received life-saving treatment. 🐾

We're so glad to see Loki back at home enjoying the sunshine 💚

Sasha, our Principal Vet here at Vets Now Belfast, says: 'Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection; it is not normally life-threatening; however, its symptoms can last for a number of weeks.

Clinical signs include a persistent dry hacking cough, gagging, eye and nose discharge and sneezing. In some cases, severe symptoms can occur with loss of appetite, fever and a chesty cough. Vaccination is important to reduce infection rates, but this is not included in the core vaccinations, so please speak to your daytime vet. If your pet is suffering from any respiratory signs, please do not hesitate to contact the team to discuss.' 🐾🐶

27/04/2023

A poorly pup called Patrick was struck down by a mystery ailment, causing him uncontrollable diarrhoea and discomfort. 😔 His owner, Jael, then began a year-long journey of tests and vet appointments to get to the route of the problem.

After many tests, it was confirmed that Patrick was suffering from a rare condition in which the intestine's lining is invaded with inflammatory cells - leading to chronic irritation and inflammation of the small and large intestines. As a result of Patrick being very poorly while tests were being undertaken, he had to spend a weekend here at our Vets Now Belfast clinic, where our team closely monitored him day and night before he returned to his regular vets.

Jael said: " He’s getting stronger every day, running up and down and then sitting chatting and yapping on the sofa. He’ll need to be on medication for life – but that’s fine: the main thing is he’s still with us and we’re very lucky to have him."

Our team is so glad to have helped with Patrick's case and a great job from our colleagues at Drumahoe Veterinary clinic and Earlswood Veterinary Clinic. 👏
